It was at Tushino Air Force Base outside of Moscow. My brother, myself and his best friend Brett were all US Air Force brats and our dads were stationed at Ramstein AFB in Germany. No way were we gonna miss this. We took about 5 trains, a bus and even hitchhiked to get to Moscow. We bribed a border guard in Ukraine because my brother (of course) lost his passport. We snuck over the Russian border near Bolgorod via an abandoned railway and were chased by cops or soldiers with dogs. They gave up and eventually somehow we made it up,to the show. It was AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera and Black Crowes. We slept in a tent we found. Then we got on a train home that ended up in Lithuania and our parents finally sent us plane fare to get back to Germany. What a fucking time to be 18.

I was a US Marine Corps sergeant in Saudi Arabia when that tune came out and we were really rocking it!

It was a free concert at some airfield given by their record label. The estimated attendance was 1.6 million.

To those of us that lived through the Cold War era this was a historical event!

The helicopters were used to keep the crowd from overheating

One of the largest concerts in the history of the world, 1.6 million screaming Russian fans. It's a beautiful thing.

This concert was held a month after the August Coup and three months before the fall of the Soviet Union. The government wanted to try bringing in music to the Soviet Union so they brought some bands to have an open air concert. The military tried to have the concert postponed because of all the political stuff happening that year (by the end of the year the Soviet Union wouldn't exist anymore) but it still went on. The military was there to keep everything in order, but the crowd got so big they couldn't do much about it and you can see some of them in the video enjoying the concert with the rest of the people.

When was the last time we saw a freaking helicopter flying over a metal concert crowd? That's right!

It wasn't just a Metallica concert - but this seems to be the only video available from that concert at least on RU-vid. The concert was "For Those About to Rock: Monsters in Moscow" and featured AC/DC, Metallica, The Black Crowes, Pantera, and E.S.T. It was held at Tushino Airfield. You will not be able to ever see a concert like that (with that sort of crowd) unless something crazy happens in the world. It was a one time thing that is unlikely to be repeated.

When you realize that this wasn't even a Metallica concert... It was an AC/DC concert and metallica was the opener.

For 1991 that was some incredible audio quality. Concerts nowadays rarely sound that impressive and exciting.

If there were ever a concert that I could go back and choose to be at, this would be it.

I remember that concert. I just finished school ))) Back then, Pantera was an unknown band in the USSR, but they just tore everyone apart with their energy and music.

This concert was a big deal when I was a kid! Unforgettable. So many human beings it blows my mind still.

The communists have never recovered after that concert. Mettalica defeated communism without firing a single shot.

The size of the crowd is mind blowing. Has to be the largest crowd to see a Metallica concert and it happened in Russia.

The concert was at Tushino Airfield in northwest Moscow, the area has since been redeveloped and is now the site of the Otkritie Arena, the home of FC Spartak Moscow. The count of 1.6 million people was actually when they stopped counting at the entrance because so many people were sneaking in by other routes. Great concert, actually opened by AC/DC, unfortunately there were too many people for the military to control and sadly over 700 were injured and over 150 people in the crowd died.

Legend has it that there are still people coming home from the concert.

From what i remember western culture had been seeping into the Soviet union for years and the people had been craving more and more. So when this concert happened people turned out in droves, and as you can see, the turnout was insane. This was their Berlin Wall moment, when they got to be free

That was epic! A well loved band around the world, at that time!

I was a 20 year-old kid living in Seattle when this concert went down. I actually went to watch Metallica here in Seattle two years before this concert took place. It was the best concert I’ve ever been to. I think this concert in Moscow is now probably the best concert ever. It’s mine blowing. 1.6 million people.

Pantera’s “Domination” was also filmed in Moscow.

I was 18 when this happened. There were 1.6 MILLION people in attendance. Russian helicopters were less then 7 meters above the crowd. Russian soldiers were stripping off their uniforms and participating in mosh pits. I was literally witnessing history. And now, history is happening again literally on the other side of the world. My life has been CRAZY!!! Мне было 18, когда это случилось. На мероприятии присутствовало 1,6 МИЛЛИОНА человек. Российские вертолеты были на высоте менее 7 метров над толпой. Im Polish we have concerts like this each year in Kostrzyn with between 350-750K people normally but this is just wow. Love it energy and people really having fun. nice.

A lot of us who are older don't realize that this was 30 years ago, and take for granted that every rock fan has seen this.

this was a big deal . I remember it & how awesome it was to see that we are all so similar after years of propaganda from both governments . My friends & I were metal kids & there are metal fans in Russia that would probably be our friends if we knew each other . Seems obvious & silly now but not then

PS: I also believe that this was the FIRST FULL LENGTH concert by an American band (of any genre) to take place on Russian soil for the PEOPLE, not the "elite". Meaning that it was the first time in decades that an American band was going to hold a full length concert (with Metallica that could be up to 3-4 hours depending on list of songs) instead of showing up for one or two songs as a "demonstration" at another group's concert or event. It WAS the first time in nearly 70 years that the list of songs being played was NOT "screened" by "party officials".

Hey, as an old man, I was in college when this album came up. For those of us who grew up during the Cold War, 1991 was a unique year - the end of the political structures we were so used to living under brought nervousness but also a kind of promise and hope for the future - on both sides of the "Iron Curtain" - that we hadn't seen before or since. Both the U.S. and Russia have kind of backslid in the decades since, but at the time, the future suddenly seemed a lot brighter for us all

Wow, great memories. I was there for the festival. I was in the recording industry and had a large recording studio where we recorded 4 Metallica albums in California where all the guys in the band lives, just north of San Francisco. I had been visiting the USSR since 1976 and talked several groups into playing there, but did not have any input on the decision to play that festival and found out about it from them. That was not certain anyone would be allowed in the country because the attempted coup happened just a few days before. The location was the old Tushino Airfield. ACDC played also, which was the first time I had seen them live. I have a lot of still photos I took from that concert. Did you grow up in St Petersburg? I live in the center near Ligovsky Metro. I moved full time from the San Francisco area in 2000 after falling in love with the city in 1976 on my first visit. The 90s was a crazy time, good and bad as an ex-pat and mostly bad for local Russians but beginning in 2000 or so everything was improving monthly and the economy really grew until the Wall Street meltdown in 2008-9 caused a depression all over. Russia did not suffer much from it but it stopped growing at 6-8% as it had for 8 years in a row. It is still a great place to live. What clubs did you go to, we probably crossed paths a lot.

Irina This concert was the greatest ever. 1.6 million fans from all over watching Metallica, AC/DC, The Black Crowes and Pantera . They didnt call it the Monsters Of Rock concert for nothing . because this truly was a Monster concert

There’s something about the energy here. It’s like all these people turned up to see a band that...gave hope? A look at a different world? I don’t know what it is about this crowd but the energy is palpable. You can feel it in the video. It’s unreal.

Amazing. The freedoms many take for granted these people were starving for...and they got a very loud helping of it that day. Music is at a higher level than politics.

Europeans do love them some Metal! One of the last big metal bands before Grunge took over. I was never much of a Metallica fan but that would have been a hell of a concert.

That wasn't just any concert, that was and still is a symbol of freedom from oppression. Even the guards were head banging. Those people needed that shit so bad. Sadly, I believe some people died in that concert, primarily from the guards. That's what I heard.

The Metallica Concert in Moscow, was stunning, thanks for putting this in your reaction.

I am surprised the crowd wasn't larger. Russia was about to fall, everyone could feel it. This was, I believe, the first American rock concert in Russia. Imagine finally being able to have the chance to see a band that you probably could have gotten in trouble for listening to even just a year ago. I was just going into high school when this happened.

It's the same year USSR fell aswell. Giving them a perspective of what's going outside the world

I was 16 at that time, living in Belgium. Although Reagan and Gorbatsjov declared the Cold War a few years earlier as over, there was still still a bit of distrust about Russia and Russian people here in Europe. Anyways, I watched this concert on TV and I was so impressed by it that I kept thinking: Now the Cold War is really over and this is a celebration of it... It wasn't the government who brought people together, but it was Metallica!

To that point in history, this was the largest concert crowd ever. i seen Metallica in Winnipeg Man Canada...on the same tour in 1991....i play bass and i had a band that named after there song Damage Inc.....my friend Malloy....our drummer and he played like Lars,,,,,the drummer.....exact same way,,,,,we kicked ass on Enter Sandman....we loved Metallica.....Peace out Man and good job with your videos!
