@@ryanlorenzo5003 Yes. This is not Sparta. But you have to count from the moment when someone realize that it really comes close. Not so much time again.
It's not a tsunami where the wave is can only be seen when close enough but at that point little can be done about it, you can see the literal cloud of snow from far away, you can see it starting to come down the mountain and head straight for you. And again, if they're spending their time counting they're not running, they can count when they're finally far away from the avalanche or at least in a spot safe enough that they aren't buried alive.
that was on purpose. Areas are at risk of avalanches like that one in early spring, so it's better to actually cause the avalanche with the knowledge of no one being accidentaly caught in it than just waiting for it to happen and killing an unfortunate few. Control avalanches happened a lot where I lived in switzerland- cool stuff!
@@fabianreusch4870 At ski resorts there is an infrastructure built for this: gas tanks are installed, then the gas is remotely detonated in huge pipes. There are also cables running around the mountain that can be used to transport explosives. If you don't have these, then you use plain old artillery, which makes controlled avalanches doubly awesome.
@@jakobfjeldsted5531 We're still building back up from the dissolution of the SSSR, and soon, we will be a world super power again, even surpassing China. Well, actually we already surpassed them. We have less troops but we have better and more equipment.
@Просто Землянин WOW, are u sure about that? So me and my frieands can invade some rich country and their army be like: we are rich, go ahead take what u want, we will not protect our ppl who paid us thrught taxes
Avalanches are started from artillery all over the world for avalanch control. But you don't usually shoot from a position so close to the direct path. This is big. It was probably bigger than expected.
@@TwixSvK Wtf u didnt get the point of his comment. He was merely saying that the point of the video is to show that russians use artillery for this and it is entertaining, he didnt ask why they used artillery instead of explosives. Also, since u asked a dumb question, the traditional method is to drop explosives from a heli so that they can do it for multiple mountains at once.
Only these are not soldiers, but civilians. They set up avalanches before the hike, or just for safety, so that she does not descend when they are not ready for it. The presence of the military only means military transport maneuvers in highlands...
Sumyute If civilians work for the government, yeah.... “civilians” are given access to literally anything in Russia if A.) The leadership is apart of the government and B.) The state approves of it... This is Russia we are talking about after all... There is a reason why their name is synonymous with extreme, unorthodoxed method and planning...
Sumyute we also do the same in the US. State employed civilians use small howitzers to shoot mountain tops to avalanche highways for clearing in northern states. Those videos are on RU-vid too
@@insxmniac7052 Not all civilians, but those who are monitoring weather situation in mountains. They are using artillery to prevent random and uncontrolled avalanches. That's worldwide method.
Can you see those green guys around? Those are soldiers. Maybe not the regular army, but they brought the artillery from the base, being under officers' command, that's for sure. There is no civilian who owns any artillery in Russia, only non-automatic or hunting rifles are allowed. I'm from Russia, I know.
+Serco Warrior These are just the hybrids. True Russians ride on the backs of Grizzlies and hunt mountain lions by stunning them with the sheer thunderous sound of the ancient Russian language, while chugging back 30 bottles of Vodka daily.
We actually did this in the Swiss army as well. It's an reliable alternative to throwing explosives from a helicopter when the weather is too bad for flying. Note that calibrating the gun beforehand is required though, obviously.
Did you do this with the old artillery cannons from the 40's that the swiss army had and used up to the 70's? Or were they controlled with the Panzerhaubitze M-109? Perhaps Flab cannons?
In England you get a light dusting of snow and the media say it's a blizzard and call Storm Tyrant. Then you have this in Russia which is treated like just another day at the office.
@Another Monke US soldiers have declared that they are in the region to liberate its people and conveniently ran into these poor undefended oil fields whose guards have all commited suicide by 5.56 to the back of the head. Russians have declared the people voted and support their intervention.
This is what is called “controlled descent/hauling down of an avalanche”. People use cannon shots do make the snow mass unstable and let it go down. Territory is being checked and controlled to avoid people’s getting into danger area. The military is used mainly for this purpose (blocking territories). Cannons as a rule are belonging to/operated by non-military (ministry for emergency) rescue teams. That time it was enormously huge masses of snow and things got out of control a little bit, but not critical. Republic of North Ossetia, Region of Russian Federation. Peace to you all.
Context: Russian snow cleaners didn't have snow to clean so they called bored Dimitri to bring his Russian-eBay(Avito) prized Artillery purchase, to shoot at Mountain for some avalanche fun.... But mainly for job.
Igor: -Hey Dimitri, why dont we have snow down here??? Dimitri: -I dont know. It seems it only snowed high in the mountains. Igor: -I kinda miss some deep snow you know. Dimitri: -I have an idea brat. Why dont we get your tank and shoot it down here! Igor: -Ooh yes. How come I didn't think of that earlier... Oh, you get your cannon, we are gonna double our chances Dimitri...
At Stevens Pass Washington State USA they use an M60 tank to release avalanches. This solves the problem of ammo availability for recoilless rifles previously used.
I love how people don't realise that they don't just do this in Russia, they've been doing it across the world but mainly in Russia, Canada and America (such as alaska)
This is done almost everywhere in the world, comewhere with a gun, somewhere by dropping charges from helicopter. Railroad service engineers very often shoot ice in tunnels by shooting at it with shotguns too... Also during floods Material that floats down the rivers and endangers dams is very often engaged by RPGs to be shredded to pieces so it passes dams easier.
All these "only in Russia" comments. We do that in the US too with old recoiless rifles. And as another comment pointed out, they do that in Switzerland too. The idea is to cause an avalanche before it becomes too big and dangerous. By causing it directly, you are also in full control and prepared where civilians are evacuated and people inside shelters. Not setting an avalanche off means that the avalanche can happen at a random time when civilians aren't aware and would be in danger.
Exactly. I am russian, but I worked together with guys from Canada, who used to do the same, they just had a bit different ammo - we use simple HEs from military, they got some specials. It was a really good knowledge exchange. By the way, we use artillery also for cleaning the ice barriers in early spring, when the ice cracks and often blocks big rivers in Siberia causing lots of damage to the forest. It's actually quite convenient, as you can deliver a cannon by a helicopter and then use it from safe distance. You can do the same with explosives charges, but that's risky, and using aviation is too expensive. Cannons are precise, cheap and efficient.
This is not an uncommon thing to do up in the mountains, Locally to me there is an avalanche crew with a US military surplus 60mm or so Recoil-less rifle that they use to clear avalanche danger.
Maphisto86 all they want is a strong impact to trigger the avalance, the eventual mean is not to explode anything nor to use the full range of the weapon.
This goes on all throughout the Rockies as well. It’s easier to trigger it before potential energy builds and nobody is around before it turns into grave site.
PS: making an artificial avalanche by artillery is a normal way to remove snow from the mountains (not only in Russia). Mostly avalanche goes naturally by itself but if it's not then show will save up in big amounts and it will be dangerous. Frequent small avalanches better than one big that can cause a lot of damage
