More than 40,000 Russians have fled to Georgia since the war in Ukraine began. A lot of Georgians are skeptical or even hostile, however, toward the new arrivals from their much-hated neighbor.
Georgia has become one of the places of refuge for Russians fleeing either state persecution or the impact of western sanctions. After organizing an anti-war demonstration, Artyom Petukhov had to leave at short notice with little more than his smartphone. He found support from an exiled compatriot, Egor Kuroptev, who moved to Tbilisi over ten years ago. Tanya from Moscow is not an activist, but has come to Georgia with her four children to give them a better future.
Meanwhile, there are growing concerns in Georgia about more Russian citizens potentially relocating to their country. Many Georgians are calling on the government to introduce a strict visa regime for the new arrivals and to distinguish between those fleeing for political or for economic reasons. Relations between the two countries are already tense; since the 2008 war, 20% of Georgia's territory has been occupied by Russia. There is a widespread fear that Georgia could be Russia's next target and that Putin might take over the entire country. Volunteers from Georgia are therefore fighting on the Ukrainians’ side in the current conflict - and risking their lives in their own personal fight against Russia.

I pay tribute to the people from Russia who left their homes and understand what is happening. I am from Ukraine, I had to leave my home, relatives and work. How it is, only we and you, who were forced to leave, can understand. Thanks to the channel that shows the truth about the war and the Putin regime! Thanks to Georgia and its people for helping refugees!

Yes but as this documentary shows that there are 10s of thousands of Russians in Georgia. So why don't they all, as 40,000+ coordinating with the 10s of thousands within Russia who are against this war, walk enmasse back into Russia, including the children peacefully. Then there would 100s of thousands publicly standing up to Putin making a very big statement. Yeah Stalin would have just mowed them down but would today's police and FSB do that?

As georgian I can't tolerate others mentioning south Ossetia, which is nonexistent country and it's correct name is Samachablo. When Russians started coming in Georgia, quite big part of georgians wanted to ban them, but perhaps in order to not make the relationship with russia more tense, our government didn't do it. We personally don't have enmity against every russians, but still it doesn't change fact that their country occupied 20% of Georgia.

@@mykhailoherasimov2753 Tell you truth many georgians supported the idea of going in Apkhazia and Samachablo. But I don't believe that it will end with our victory even if we, georgians risk it. Georgia has weak military power. I feel angry because of that toward past ot present government, but it's still unchangeable fact. Second is that even if we somehow take our territories back, in this process the interaction with the abkhazians or ossetians can't be avoid. It will cause even more enmity between us. Some of ossetians may go back to north ossetia, but abkhazians doesn't have any other place to live. So at least even after the war we will have to live together and new hate after the war will be remembered through the generations.

As for russians, sudden migration or move of tens of thousands of people in the small country like georgia always results negative effect between the locals. Our experience with russia is extremely bad man. Who knows and can tell you which of them are really on the opposite side of russian government. @fastovezz I agree with you. Just look what is happening right now in Abkhazia. Their so called country is wholly depended on the russia. The population of abkhazians is also lessening with alarming speed. Russia started with Abkhazia's corrupted 'government' to gave russian citizens more lands there. As I know, the Russian government also took more than 160 acres just a few days ago , when at least ten family live there, but no one cares about them.

I'm Russian who have left the country to Georgia after a month of the beginning of the war. I was on the protest at the first day of the war in Moscow and was caught by police and brought to court. It's too long to tell how many violations there were by them. I was shocked by the quantity of people on the protest. It was only about 3000 and the police swept it off in about 2 hours. Some of my friends, relatives and my girlfriend told me that I'm wrong and I violate the "peace and unity in our country". Some of people were telling that the war is correct. It's for good. I live in Georgia for more than 4 months so far. It was a long journey of the moral comprehension of all this. It's just recently when I stopped drinking and smoking just to hide my pain and anxiety. You literally don't know what to do with your new status. In the alien country, alone, at first thinking that you are mad and always in doubts "What am I doing here, why I came here, maybe I'm mad, as so many people say that I'm wrong", etc. Throughout my entire childhood I was raised with agenda "We are the nation of winners, savers and defenders" (actually I'd you dive deeper into Afghanistan, Georgia and so on it's not so, but that romantic picture is hard to destroy if you don't have will for that and the majority of people don't have it). And here you are. Your country started this, you are a part of it. First - guilt, apathy, inner self-destruction. Second - acceptance, understanding of the situation and just attempts to normalize your life again. Third (and current) - reimagining of your inner picture of the world and your life and trying to do what you can do and work on yourself and help people who you can help. Thanks to the Georgians who applied us here (although not every of them are welcoming us, but I've never encountered any hostile behavior towards me in real life). They are truly hospitable and nice people and thank you for having us the possibility to live here. P.s. I know - the horror of the Ukrainians is way worse and higher and can't be compared to our problems. At the same time it doesn't mean that we can't have our feelings and problems.

Dear DW, First off, thank you for making this short documentary. Russian mass migration in Georgia is a very sensitive topic. Free Russia foundation is doing great work and these people represent what true shame and responsability should look like. Alas for vast majority of Russians in Georgia, responsability and respect are alien concepts. Most Ruskie coming to my country are not like the ones shown in your documentary, they are vulgar, unapologetic and are not "political refugees" but rather people who escaped sanctions because it inconvenienced their lifestyle. Many of them openly support their president and terrorist country. You said 40K have entered georgia since february, yet only 400 showed up at the Buch massacre protest, I wonder why that is. Tens of thousands more have entered Georgia since april. Our government, which is controlled by a Russian-Georgian oligarch is unwiling to controll unchecked flow of Russians into the country, people of dubious backgrounds and goals are free to enter, while several journalists ( from Rain TV and others) have been denied entry. Overall Russians are not welcome to Georgia as expressed by majority of the people ( and not the government), because they bring blood and desrespect wherever they go. I do not want to rant endlessly, just know that these few Russians that you have shown are an absolute minority.

I have question to those who are claiming to be against war and the Russian imperialism but feel uncomfortable to see anti-Putin, anti-imperialist banners, information and so on... Plus, I recommend them to study Georgian and teach Georgian to their children if they want to stay in Georgia, also they need to understand that Georgia is an independent, sovereign, different country, and they need to respect Georgia, Georgian nation and culture! Georgia has an official language, and it is Georgian not Russian, for tourists of course there is no necessity of knowing Georgian because they can use English as it is international language. By the way, in 2006 in Russia anti-Georgian raids started, Police, tax, fire, and other inspection teams were sent to the cafés, restaurants, hotels, entertainment centers, and other enterprises belonging to ethnic Georgians in Russia. Scheduled Georgian cultural performances were cancelled. Taxi drivers were encouraged to request identification from their passengers and refuse service if they turned out to be Georgians. And a massive anti-Georgian propaganda campaign unfolded in the Russian mass media. Georgians were arrested just for being Georgians, and then they were collected and deported via cargo planes if they weren't people, but I don't remember Russians protesting it and defending rights of Georgians, however they are good at criticizing people who have suffered from their terrorist state and yes they are also responsible for them because there was no Putin in 1993 but Apkhazeti was occupied, ethnic cleanse of Georgians and massacre was organized by Russia, Putin isn't only problem, but the mentality of the Russian nation is a real problem behind their leaders. Putin is just one of the representatives of the Russian imperialism which is historically rooted in the society. Even more In August 2008 opposition activist, Aleksei Navalny ,who is considered liberal and democratic leader, referred to Georgians by as "rodents" and said that it would be great if Tbilisi was destroyed as it is a capital of "small empire" (yes, Russians call Georgia Malo-Imperiya... it's part of their old anti-Georgian propaganda, later advanced by Mikhail Suslov. Navalny later apologized, but I don't really believe that he changed, he just needed to pretend as if he really changed.

I say thank you so much for the very dangerous effort you are trying to make better for your country and people. There is mentioned in the documentary that Russians are not welcomed in Georgia. Still is growing number of Russian citizens who have been settling down in Georgia since February. They have got the opportunity to buy their own property, start business and even to speak in Russian with locals. Let's take a step back and try to see a bigger picture: Georgia has experienced the brutal war in Apkhazia and Samachablo in 1992-93, bloody war in 2008, occupying 20% of country and creeping occupation till today. And all of these is just a drop in the Ocean to list tyrant actions of Putin's regime. Reminder, in 2008, Russia stated that part of the reason for its military action in Georgia stemmed in part from the harm ethnic Russians faced from the Georgian government. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during the war that the Russian constitution required military action because of Russia’s “responsibility to protect.” This justification represented a distorted merging of the R2P principle, protection for vulnerable groups, and undermined moral authority for humanitarian intervention. Facing minimal international repercussions for its actions, Russia’s reasons for using force in Georgia established a dangerous precedent that it would repeat in different permutations in the years after. And really soon, we have seen Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and annexation of Crimea in 2014 according to their own understanding of R2P. According to abovementioned Georgians has got the reason to be afraid of Russian citizens who really easily could be weaponzed in a name of "responsibility to protect" by the Putin's barbarous regime. Still, Georgia is not against Russian people, that's why there is a growing number of citizens who choose to start living in Georgia. But strongly against the Putin's occupant regime and therefore to all the people who cross the border and do not want to understand or acknowledge that: 1. Putin's regime kills in Ukraine and not only. 2. 20% of Georgia is occupied by Russia.

On the contrary, they do not even like flying Ukrainian flags around the country. And starting to talk that they are facing russophobia and discrimination is just one more red alert from the begining and Russian propaganda starts to work. I am sure even in this comment section Russian troll factory will try to make their influence. And for those two group of people I have got only one message: Русский военный корабль, иди на хуй! The fact that some so-called anti-Putin Russians complain about the quality of their accommodation and feel entitled, rather than showing compassion says so much about them. The reason we are poor (and btw, very few Georgian families can afford to have a separate bedroom for the children), is directly related to the Russian invasion, that investors are reluctant to enter the country because of instability, and that pretty much everything that is related to progress is hindered directly or indirectly by Russia-funded groups. Wouldn't it be better to acknowledge our struggle, rather than saying that "I didn't invade your country"?

Some humility would be needed. Also, as someone else said. 400 were at the protest from the 40.000 that came to Georgia. That’s 1%!! If they say that they cant protest in Russia fearing arrestment, this is a good example that this is a lie. They could protest and actually do something from Georgia, but 99% of russists dont care enough even to get out of their houses to light a candle. And we expect them to influence a regime change…

It started with words, 'Tbilisi is a 5000 year old city'. That is a number that in my opinion would be out of comprehension of any Russian. But then again, I was, I am a Latvian. What is in Russian heads is not understandable. One reason what I heard recently is that Russia(ns) do(es) not have a national identity. That it always wanted to be an empire or anything but not a nation of individuals who work on it. The same probably can be told about British and our Brexit. I am Latvian but recently found that it is not wrong to declare my nationality as British since I identify myself as such. A weird thing.

_The Fourteen Characteristics of Fascism_ 1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. 2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, and the like. 3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, and the like. 4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda i s neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy. 6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes the media are directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media are indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. 7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. 8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. 9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. 10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed . 11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked and governments often refuse to fund the arts. 12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

As a Georgian I never had problem with people coming to my country to see how good it is and so on but with Russians i have two problems 1. They are reason two Georgian regions are occupied and 2. If they are really opposing putin they need to be in Russia doing it in mass movements or underground protests not sitting in Tbilisi having fun in pubs and bars while our soldiers die in Ukraine..... Clueless People.... I understand fear of being captured but they cant arrest millions

This attitude is displayed by “smart” IT people as well.

I'm sorry but it's a veeery small manority of russians who think like that, vast majority of russians in Georgia came here only for life without sanctions, and ofcourse the fsb agents are here, they drink all day, attaking georgian buisnesses, demanding from Georgians to speak russian, they opened cafes in Batumi where local Geogians can't order in Georgian language, they support putin, paying taxes which means investing in war meanwhile living here and using our resourses, they bring here their imperialistic views and very shoked why Georgians don't greet them well, because every generation of my country have friend or relative who was fighting against russian invasion, or died in it, because thrugh out the history russia brought my country only death and suffering, and now they want to rewright the history by saying that until soviet union there wasn't such country as Georgia, we are the one of the oldest country whith the oldest culture! P.s. please don't use the name "south osetia", russians came up with that name, it's Tskhinvali region, region of Georgia, such is Abkhazia

@@Bornana7 as I stated, nothing. Just a different perspective. You are not imprisoned just for a wrong opinion, it’s only valid for demonstrations, public activity, media. Not that many of those who left have been vocal before anyway, the financial operations and operations in general are the catalyst for most middle class freelancers or businessmen. You may be surprised how many zeddos actually left because of the exact same reason.

@fastovezz would you fight agaisnt a few thousands 30-years-old trained men in special equipment who have full rights to use unlimited violence towards you, knowing you could be sent to prison for a trifle where you're gonna be tortured? I mean it's easy to be "a fighter" in a democratic country, fighting against the system which opresses you in Twitter, knowing this system will defend all your rights, but when it comes to totalitarian and authoritarian states like Russia... Then there's the only one way out. A bloody senseless cruel revolution, but this revolution demands people to have nothing so they won't be afraid to lose anything. Just like the Arab spring.
