Russians still support Putin, says Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dmitry Muratov | DW Interview

For almost a year and four months, Russia's invasion of neighboring Ukraine has been going on. How has the level of Russian support for this war changed? Dmitry Muratov, who rarely gives interviews, spoke about this in an exclusive interview with Deutsche Welle.
The presence of a Russian journalist at the Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany, even one so renowned for critical coverage of Vladimir Putin's regime, had prompted criticism from some quarters in Ukraine and elsewhere.
During his speech on Tuesday in Bonn, air raid sirens sounded briefly and a voice could be heard saying words to the effect of "take cover" in Ukrainian. Audience members also shouted "Glory to Ukraine" as he finished his speech.
Muratov has long been critical of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and in the summer of 2022, he auctioned off his 2021 Nobel Peace Prize medal.

but that's the only way for Russia to guarantee its security! Afterall after the war is over, Ukraine will SURELY join NATO. A weak NATO neighbor is better than a healthy one. What he said about the Ukrainian society and the government, same for Russia, is so true. Without that power held by Ukrainians, their fighting spirit and strong believes, the government in Kyiv has a pound to throw in the ring. Whereby the Russian government holds all the power over people, the older gen doesn't know better and still clings to that weird heroism what has nothing to do with this war, rather than with Russian nationalism and chauvinism. "Wollt ihr den totalen Krieg?" Putin asked and those still living in Phantasialand are yelling "Hurrah, Hurrah" and feel "great again". Pretty surreal, but unfortunately real.

Maybe the elderly in Russia but as for me who was born early in the sixties in the west I have seen what people from Russia are made of: Imperialism, mistrust, ignorance , bieng a bully in the schoolyard, racists, homofobic and don't care of human life.
@ddshiranui
@ddshiranui Год назад
I notice it is generally often the older generations who are more set in their ways and unwilling to open their eyes. Easier to feel threatened and more prone to clinging to national pride as an escape mechanism, lacking the more international attitude of the youth. I see this in the reactionary AfD voters in Germany, the Empire-lamenting Brexiteers of the UK, the right-wing conservatives in the US etc. Of course it is worse in countries where the state controls the media, like Russia or Hungary. The exception is, I think, the generation that actually lived through the horrors of war and has experienced loss, but WW2 was too long ago -- and so I reckon most of the old folks in Russia today only remember the Cold War, the economic collapse and uncertainty that accompanied the dissolution of the USSR, and how Putin "saved" them by stabilizing the country ~20 years ago, ignorant of how his policies now have the opposite effect.

The news organizations and others keep reporting in ways that suggest that both sides should resume negotiations - on Russian terms. Presuming that Ukraine should give up a bunch of their territory. If you are proposing another Munich, that will not go over well with the Ukrainians. Or with me. It also sends a message to other tinhorn aggressors to go on the path of conquest.
