RUST 101: Electricity Guide - Using The Sensor Properly

I've seen a lot of people saying that the HBHF sensor is useless as it only outputs 1 power. I wanted to make a quick video to show everyone how to use them properly because the sensor has a lot more potential than some people realize.

@@TheOfficialSniper916 If I understand correctly, this means that when the HBHF is triggered whatever is connected to the AND will turn on?
@TheOfficialSniper916
@TheOfficialSniper916 4 года назад
@@RodsAndAxes the output of the AND gate will turn on. AND is a logic gate and it requires all inputs to be true to output a true. Since the power source is always outputting true, the AND gate will only output true when the HBHF sensor gets activated.

No worries man! Here's a fun one for you to give a try... put a button by your front door, throw that hbhf sensor outside above your front door and then put any sort of alarm light inside next to the button. Wire the button the the hbhf sensor and then the sensor to the light. Buttons push out 2 power when they're pressed without being powered so you don't need to power this. Now anytime you're leaving your base hit the button and if the light turns on you're being door camped. Have fun and stay safe! :)

Something to note is that the HBHF sensor outputs the number of people it detects in the form of power, so 5 people = 5 power, 1 person = 1 power. It is however bottlenecked by the amount of power going into it. For it, to output 5 power it needs to get 6 power or higher. You can also use the combination of an AND Switch with an Electrical Branch for a more simple way to pass power.
@exterminater267
@exterminater267 4 года назад
To make it more simple I use it with AND gates. So when its in range it send a signal to the AND gate, allowing the greater of the two power feeds through.

I am using large solar panel, to small battery to power pretty much your exact set up but just opening two doors on triangle platform. I was checking on my turrets etc and see the batter is constantly at 4-5s remaining on power - so my assumption is as soon as it’s night this won’t work? Solar panel to small battery Battery out to splitter 1 Splitter 1 to HBHF in, mem cell power in, mem cell reset HBHF out to mem cel set Mem cell out to splitter2, Splitter2 our to 2 door controllers

this is a bad setup. use the AND switch and this to do what you need. Have a solid source of power coming into the AND switch, when the sensor turns on and sends that 1 power to the AND switch, then its ON but the power is based on the other input which a value you can pre-establish.

@Malonik
@Malonik 5 лет назад
Depends on the base and where it's built, for example a 2x2 in a fairly flat area I'd throw one on the ground outside at one corner and the other on the ground at the corner diagonally opposite the first one that way you cover all four sides with 2 of them. But again it's extremely circumstantial and also depends on what you want them to do.

@Malonik why do people say electrical branches are more power efficient? they are not. a branch will constantly consume the power configured to branch off, meaning if you're just using it as a splitter for something that can be turned on/off with a switch, it's going to cause a power drain. splitters are much more power efficient. i had a base with 4 components that could be switched on/off and changing all my branches to splitters made my idle power consumption go down from 21 to 5.
@Malonik
@Malonik 4 года назад
I was actually debating this with gal the other night. It took a long ass time lol. It really depends on what you're hooking up but there's some little bits and pieces people don't realize. For example if you're wanting to be exact with splitters you've got to branch off the exact power you want it to have which means you're already using a branch so splitters are just an extra component to get. But let's say you found it so why not use it. Say you're using it to power 3 door controllers so you're pushing 4 power to it, 1 for the splitters and then 1 for each line for the door controllers. If you lose 1 power to that you'd expect that one line would stop working. But that's not the case, instead the splitter shits the bed because it can't split 2 power across 3 outputs and everything stops working. Where as with a branch it'll keep sending what it can (branch first then power out). They also round down. So say you push 12 power to a splitter. 1 power is the component and then it has 11 power to split 3 ways. That's 3.66 but because it rounds down it pushes 3 to each and you lose 1.98 power to literally nothing. Where as you could use 2 branches to achieve the same output for less power. They also make it more complicated to expand circuits which is why I generally stay away from them. A lot of my circuits are made on a small scale but I know bigger groups like to implement them and expand. Being able to just wire more in from your branch chain is a hell of a lot easier than rewiring and adding more splitters. So if what you're using the splitter for is perfectly divisible by your number of outputs, won't be expanded in the future and your power source is super reliable then it's worth using them. So they do have their place they're just less versatile than a branch.

so with this set up you could ... if i am correct... have 3 Auto Turrets hooked up to one sensor instead of the doors and flashy light correct? that way your turrets wont drain your batteries by being on all the time. ... yes? im about to go completely rewire my base because of this video.. and i hope i don't screw it all up B^) thank you so much!!! i have been trying to figure out how to rig these dang sensors up to the turrets for a while now. and no one has made any videos on it yet, all i could find were how to hook power up to them B^P Thank you very much for this video explaining the sensors. you may want to make a new one showing how to hook up all your turrets to them as well because it would be very useful for others im sure. especially for us solo players
@Malonik
@Malonik 5 лет назад
Yes however there's two things to keep in mind with that... The first is that each turret requires 10 power so you'll need to ensure that you have a for bit of power running through that circuit. The second is that turrets take a considerable amount of time to turn on and while turning on they can be authorized on. So you're going to want to make sure they're not easily reachable otherwise people can auth on them and they won't do anything.

Been a while since I played with XOR switches, but if they still say they consume a power but don't actually you can use them to funnel all of the sensors down to one output. Failing that you could get away with using and switches on the initial row and then run them into XOR or OR switches. That way one line into the and switch can essentially just be the power to push through the pyramid of switches as and switches will always take the higher power of the two.

This should be easier but they have some parts that makes no sense at all. You should be able to do this with the smart switch and lasers, but when you try it the lights or device loses power as soon as you step out of the laser you would think if you have one trigger wired to the smartswitch toggle on and 1 to toggle off that the device would remain powered until the toggle off is triggered but it doesn't and it makes 0 sense to me.

I did see a comment that the more people you have being sensed the more power it will push out. I haven't personally tried it but honestly it sounds like a side effect of how it was coded and they've just forgotten to cap it to 1. That being said if that is the case then you should be able to set a counter to show passthrough and it should show it. @@Malonik ahh, I see. I have built a cottage-like base with a second story that is somewhat restricted by the roof. So yeah, it will go off when I get up there and open the door, but nothing else. Considering the small amount of power they use, I guess it would be possible to create one for each side of the house, and just rely on one solar panel? Then connect them all to the signal light up there. My original thought was to add an auto turret to the circuit, so that when movement was detected, the doors to a pillbox for the auto turret would open, and the auto turret would go on. I found another video and the idea with that one was to use a blocker to have the doors close to the pillbox when the auto-turret runs out of ammo. Hey! You sure can! Run the sensor to an rf broadcaster and have the pager on you. Not sure if you guys have the smart components yet but if / once you do you can run the sensor to a smart alarm and set up rust+ on your phone so you get push notifications there when it goes off. :)

@Malonik
@Malonik 4 года назад
@@nycee7359 It's doable, however because the door controller is more of a toggle than a controller it'll mean that once that non authorized person dies all those doors would open up again. If this is for a trap base then that can work. However if this is base defense then it'll actually weaken your base because if they get tc they can rework it so it opens for the doors for them. It can be wired up so that you have to reset it from somewhere in the base (or even multiple places in the base). However that complicates the circuit really fast. More than happy to rig it up for you if you're still interested in it though. :)

It would help if I knew how much power each one needs. Does the first two connections to the memory cell and HBHF sensor both need just one rWh or whatever the unit is? Just for signaling purposes? I think that's the case but i'm not sure.

I've seen a video on how to set up the sentries and garage doors (using branches), how do I add the HBHF sensor to trigger the smart switch?

the smart switch is a toggle. So just use it as a passthrough after your toggle

Here's a question, not sensor related but something I'm stuck with. Is it possible to make a door open and close on a timer, but constantly. Say like every five minutes or something, once a switch had initially been pressed. I'm looking into a way to try and trick potential raiders into thinking that I'm online..... Hope that makes some sort of sense! Any info very much appreciated.

@@magoomagoon Yes this can be done and I've done it. An initial 'ticking timer' can be created with the use of 2 branches, a blocker and a timer. This however is a leading path into advanced logic and electrics, practical both in and out of rust.
@TheTJRod

Do you mind expanding on this. I want to make 3 "zones" around the base using two sensors for each zone for better coverage around edges. My issue is that it use so much power in branches and switches and the HQM cost is so high it's just not worth it at some point. Since I don't get any output running two HBHF sensors into a OR switch I have to use a branch and AND switch then to OR switch. That allows either or both HBHF sensors to trigger multiple things. (3x branch, 2 HBHF, 2x AND, 1x OR). The zones will later feed into one of three lights alerting those inside where they are, as well as activating turret pod doors and a transmitter.
@josephdavis3472
@josephdavis3472 4 года назад
You're forgetting about Memory cells. You can run multiple HBHF into multiple SET option on otherwise powered memory cells, then run those memory cells into whatever you need to power. Just remember that you need to also use an electrical branch per memory cell so you can run 1 power back into the reset node on each memory cell as well (otherwise it won't reset properly). As a side benefit Memory cells also do not consume electricity so they can be used as repeaters as well. This probably sounds like insane babbling, but any time you can't figure out a circuit in Rust, the problem can usually be solved by either a memory cell or a blocker

I've set it up exactly like you described, but my doors are opening and closing continiously when someone stands in trigger range. How do they remain open as long as the person is standing there?
@Malonik
@Malonik 5 лет назад
They remain open because so long as someone is triggering the sensor it is sending power to the set function on the memory cell. If both the set and reset functions are powered the set function takes priority over the reset function so it shouldn't reset until there is no power going to the set (when the sensor isn't being triggered).

@ironcupcake6149
@ironcupcake6149 5 лет назад
Your things turning on and off constantly means that your battery does not have enough power. To help you fix the issue use the display thingie(forgot the name) to check your electricity output. Remember that ONE turret takes 10 electricity output. You may have a power shortage my friend.
