Thank you for showing this. I think Aluminum probably interacts with the copper in this paint and sets up electrolysis and corrosion...that why there is a warning on the label. I have used Rust-Oleum enamel products for years and have had good results. Also, the "big box stores" that sell this product are numerous, convenient and local. "Boat stores" are not so numerous and close by.
Perfect we have been waiting for this video. The boat looked amazing when you took it out, and we were curious about the paint Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours too
Thanks Brian. I bought my C30 on City Island and kept it there a few seasons. So I was amazed at what you had showing at haul out. Will definitely give this a try in the Chesapeake.
I am new to sailing. I am a 50 yr old retired veteran. I have bought my first boat a few months ago and brought her home a week ago. Repairing windfall. A journey back to the water. Is our channel. I have been looking at antifouling and rust oleum is one ive been looking at for the bottom. Ibwill probably change the color on the topside and i dint know if rust oleum will have the colors i will want
A great video, what make and size is your boat? Mine was a Catalina C34. It usually took 1 gal per coat. I have used many types of bottom paints over the years and found in fresh water epoxy did very well but oblative paint worked better in saltwater. Your review has changed my mind and the price is a bonus. Thanks.
Howdy, this one is a Catalina 30 and yes my mind was blown as well as lots of other at my marina. I really thought this video was go in a diffrent direction before i pulled her out
Very surprised by the performance. But I still prefer using VC17, as it is much smoother and more like a « Teflon » coat. Better performance in light air sailing as it has very little resistance. One quart does my entire boat, which is 28 feet .
Cool. Here in Galveston the gunk and slime forms fast nuff the barnacles gotta struggle, and can scrape mini barnacles. Thanks for vid gonna paint my rudder now I pulled it. - Alex, Ericson 25. PS Rudder is heavy but I could pull mine, so that is option sometimes....
@@Sailing.Artemis .. in my old Macgregor 26 I pulled the mast and motored the river ways to not have to wait for lift bridges ,and traveled half the " great loop" erie-lakes-mississipi-intrcoastal route... the "foster journey" is RU-vidr in my marina who boated Texas till getting board and voyaged to Bahamas then Chesapeake. . . . As only things I learned Quikpak kayak and snow tube inflatables are handy to get to shore, or just swim with stuff in waterproof garage bag layers or fancy dry bags. And separate 2 anchors by 30 feet of chain to hold better and usually same lifting force required if in under 30ft depth..
@@Sailing.Artemis ... The Fosters went deep in the "sailing" side. But to me a simple 50 pound motor and pound of gasoline an hour will push sailboat unlike pre1950 when motors were finicky and broke down, not sure sailing is worth time to learn deeply and invest in new sails.... One day I'll own a mastless catamaran, ha. Good luck.
Odd I don't see it on any of the boating websites but I can find it on amazon, Home Depot and Lowes the prices are all over the place but amazon seems to be on the lower side at $42
The Hudson is full salt up to Bear mountain I'm in full salt where I am You would need to go way far up the river The problem with that is you would need to be un stepped I also am not sure if that would clean your hull
@@Sailing.Artemis .. I have no idea can any rivers of NJ be motored up. .. but if fresh water killed barnacles probably marinas would offer some chamber to do this, so ha,probably nope ...
When I saw Rust-oleum, I thought you were going to talk about Rust-oleum Cold Galvanizing spray, which is great for anti-fouling for underwater metals. It contains about 94% zinc. If you compare it to Pettit Barnacle Barrier, it has the same zinc % content. If you research this further, both Pettit and Rust-oleum are owned by RPM International. Hmmmm? The Rust-oleum Cold Galvanizing spray is about $11/20 oz can and the Pettit Barnacle is about $30/can. I am sure they are identical products. As mentioned here, readily available in Lowes ($1/can cheaper) and Home Depot. I am pretty sure the bottom paint featured here is the same product as one of Pettit's copper-based paints (just compare the cuprous oxide % content), only much cheaper.
