It’s MOT time again and I have found some rust in the footwell and floor where it meets the sill
Join me as I make the repair panels with no special tools, chop out the rot and put the strength back in
keeping this old cruiser on the road for many years to come!

Your right Scotty there’s receipts for £750 in the history for welding that as you saw was poor quality work that didn’t last. I had to redo the other side as well and that was years ago so god knows how much it would cost now! It’s no wonder the few that are left end there days on the banger track 😕🔧👍👍

Great video, I learnt a lot with some great tips about making up the panel. I need to do the same job and more on my XJ8. The only thing is I think I need to go a lot further as my sill has gone as well. Thanks for showing us.

Thanks Michael best of luck with your repair, if it’s gone into the sill allow extra time for the unknown work that may present itself 🔧. The repair you watched and the follow up video making your repairs last for years was filmed over several days. If you do this sort of thing regularly you’ll know what I mean. All the best Steve 👍

Thanks for your comment as I see you are doing welding on cars, it may amuse you to know I struggled all the way through this job it turned out the brass nut that holds the liner in at the machine end was missing ! Must have been like it for some time. Now bought a new torch and welds much improved 😀

Nice job, very informative, I was just looking around mine this afternoon and managed to poke my finger through the underneath of the car by the jacking point, fingers crossed it won't cost to much as I have zero knowledge or tools to weld myself.

If it’s any consolation Steve I had no idea that this even needed any attention until I was doing my pre MOT checks, what the viewers don’t know is I did all this work on the other side the previous year so was hoping for an easy pass this time around 😀 don’t let your survivor end it’s days on the banger track it always looks worse than it really is. 👍

@@stevesclassicgarage9464 I am tempted to get a gasless mig and give it a go, lads at work said if I take my time it should be OK, what thickness steel did you use ??
@stevesclassicgarage9464
@stevesclassicgarage9464 3 года назад
Regarding the steel thickness 18 gauge is what you need for this type of work. Welding old cars with a decent welder is not easy, learning how to weld with a low budget welder will take a lot of trial and error at best. Unless you want to learn welding and invest in all the kit you will need, I would let a professional welder do the work ( not an MOT station ) as they will have the proper equipment and skill needed to do a good job.

@@stevesclassicgarage9464 cheers buddy, I'm glad you said that as I really don't know what I'd be doing lol, the lads suggested I have a crack at it but I'd rather let someone know what they're doing than wasting money on a cheap welder and making a complete mess of it only to get a pro to sort out my mess afterwards 🤣🤣, thanks for your advice 👍

@curvs4me

Some may call it blasphemy but I hate the XJS, it's a huge boat and no sports car. Mk1 xk8 with a good aero kit and Mustang GT350 5.0 32 valve drivetrain including the 6 speed and a 2.7 litre intercooled supercharger will make it what the xkr should have been. Oh yes, the stupid headlights ruin the car. Even more so on the blocky mk2. Maserati Gran Turismo headlights will make it look like it should have all along.

The XJ6 C is a really cool car I would love one. The rarity of them will make it a worthwhile project I’m sure.
@jb944
@jb944 3 года назад
Great job. I need to do the same on my XJ8, its going (gone) in the same spots on both sides. I am just not totally sure how the jacking point is welded to the sill.... I have watched the video several times trying to work that out. Looks like you possibly had to cut some inner sill away too (which I need to do on a small section.
@stevesclassicgarage9464
@stevesclassicgarage9464 3 года назад
I’m pretty sure the the jacking point originally only directly welded to the floor as this car was one of the first generation where the whole or at least a large part of the side structure went in as one unit and was spot welded to the floor and door apertures. There is an internal brace at each end of the sill which is only accessible with the outer sill removed which I guess helps spread the jacking load from the bottom of the sill to the top. The floor in the front has lots of shape and bracing and may include the inner sill as I don’t remember there being a seam between the two. In summary the jacking force is taken into the floor and not so much into the sill as was the case on lots of older cars.
@MegaFunkyskunk
@MegaFunkyskunk 2 года назад
The jacking point has a strengthening plate that is sandwiched between the floor and jacking point. It extends from the chassis rail to the inner sill and ties the jacking point to the inner sill and stops the jacking point going through the floor. I’m in the process of repairing both sides floor to sill areas and can confirm the front corner is very complicated with about 5 panels all tying together.

Great job, well done. If you were taking this car to a body shop to do the work, how much would that set you back?
@stevesclassicgarage9464
@stevesclassicgarage9464 3 года назад
Very difficult to price this sort of work, a shop would probably charge by the hour that’s around £50 for every hour spent plus materials. I have receipts for this car for hundreds of pounds spent on MOT patches that you saw me cut out, the work only lasted 3 or 4 years. Most working garages don’t want this type of work as it ties there ramp up for too many days and they are not able to fabricate even basic repair panels. You really are on your own if you’re on a budget, especially if you’re mad enough to have two old XJ6’s and a MK2. Thanks for your positive comment 👍

@@stevesclassicgarage9464 thank you. I have been considering an XJ for a while, but getting anything within budget that won’t need welding within 12 months is hard. Mechanically, I have no problems in taking care of any issues, but bodywork and welding in particular, is something I haven’t grasped yet.
