Client requirement: Oak, oak and more oak was the brief of this garden and that’s exactly what our clients received with this design. Paul and Ellie contacted us to undertake a complete transformation of their garden. They wanted a space to enjoy as their young puppy had managed to single handily dig up their previous garden.
Included as main features:
Natural stone paving
Sleepers
Pergola
Corten Edging
Gravel garden
Firepit
Lighting
Planting
Something a little different: Our clients wanted raised borders alongside the fence line but didn’t want the ‘bog standard’ option of horizontal sleepers. They were keen for us to achieve a rustic look and wanted to use Oak. Our amazing Garden Designer, Sharon, created a raised retaining border with different height sleeper uprights to deter Ron ‘the dog’ from digging up the plants.
Unique fencing design: They also requested a firepit and fenced off area for Ron (the dog) where he could be let out, but not have access to the rest of the garden. Instead of adding a normal fence line with a gate, the design followed the theme of the sleeper uprights which acted as a fence. The firepit, and back support for the benches, were also specifically designed to keep in line with the theme of the sleeper uprights.
Rustic elegance: The design also included a rustic pathway leading from the back door to the entertaining area; Cotswold Clay pavers were laid. There are two sections of the pavers which are laid in Herringbone style to enhance the overall design of the garden. We then chose a sandstone which complements the clay pavers beautifully.
More oak to tie in with the design: An Oak pergola was installed next to the firepit to enjoy later in the evening with seating underneath as well as a BBQ.
Lighting design and installation: The lighting installation for this garden build is subtle and highlights key trees and shrubs in the garden. Luckily, the original garden had three Betula’s which were included in the lighting design and were all uplit; so too an existing Acer. Festoon lighting was also added to the pergola.
Planting: The planting is a mixture of evergreen shrubs and perennials for all year-round interest. Hydrangeas, Cornus, Sambucas, Roses, grasses and Cotinus will add various colour leaves and perennials such as Nepeta, Gaura, Erigeron, Verbena and Echinacea will provide the colour in the summer months.
