The 18km Rustig Magalies Krans hiking trail can be done as a day hike from Gauteng, or as an overnight backpacking adventure over two days. www.rustig.co.za #gautenghikes #hikingsouthafrica #magaliesberghike
I did this trail when i was about 16 and its the trail that made me fall in love with hiking. but I will say those green ladders scared the living daylight out of me lol.
We also took the "very dangerous" bit - probably the best part of the route. We lost the route a number of times, but it was in thick mist and pouring rain. It is a really cool hike.
I really liked how the 18km was a different trail to the 13km (although they crossed each other sometimes). It makes me want to go back and do the other trails to see where they lead!
We did the overnight trail in Feb 2021, unfortunately the trail maintenance then was really really lacking, and it was overgrown with this terrible nettle-needle-plant-thing that stings like a 'brandwurm' sting, had to hack our way through with trek poles and I ended up with my first and thus-far only ever, long term ankle damage from a hike
A little bit sketchy in places but you guys did well! Is this gvt land or private property? Do they have a fee to enter or park? and Has your family gotten COVID vaccination 💉 yet??
Hi Tom! This is a private property, although on the escarpment of the Magaliesberg there are no fences as it functions more like a conservancy. There is a fee, ranging from R65 to R95 depending on which trail you do and whether it is a weekend or not. Unfortunately my age group is not yet eligible for vaccinations in South Africa, but my parents have received their first vaccine. Gauteng went into level 4 lockdown the day after we did this hike because of the rising numbers of COVID cases 😞
