Rustproofing a vehicle after a collision repair or just to extend the life of your investment.

This step is a chance to improve on the manufacturers' shortfalls or have your build fall into the dreaded rebuilt vehicle stereotype. I'll show you how to apply rust proofing or cavity wax and some of the benefits. I'll also explain the difference between cavity wax and undercoating. You don't have to wait for the vehicle to be in an accident, it can be done right off the dealer lot to prolong the life of your investment.

Rust proofing is important, but keeping a vehicle clean underneath is more important in my opinion. I spend more time cleaning under the hood, inside the fenders, torque boxes, cross members and into the bed sides than I do the outside of my truck. People down south or out west have no idea how good they have it.

The thing about your rebuild's is that with all the care, quality and attention to detail plus the maintenance you do to each vehicle when you're done rebuilding. Your vehicles are the best bet for anyone needing a quality vehicle.

Here in South-Western part of Norway rust-proofing is needed, or your vehicle will rust out withing 6 years. Mercasol and Fluid film are the only one's that work here. The treatment takes 2-3 days. The places steam wash the entire underside of the vehicle, and then warm air dry the vehicle for at least 18 hours before applying the treatment. All this is due to the extreme moisture and low temperatures combined with salty coastal air. The average moisture level is 88-94% in the 8 winter months, and around 60-70% in the summer period. Need to re-apply Fluid Film every 4 years, Mercasol every 2-3 years. Good to see a proper repair being treated against corrosion the proper way, not just spraying it with "anti-rust primer" and a few quick coats of rattle-can paint. A small bonus of doing a full wax-coat and undercoating is that it reduces the noise level in the vehicle.

Good video.. We bought a Toyota Corolla one time that had had a front fender replaced. They painted the outside but left the inside just the black primer from the factory (it was an aftermarked fender so it was cheap crap). The fender started rusting around the edges and on the back because there was no paint or rust proofing on it.

Scott, big thumbs up for taking the time to explain and demonstrate your rustproofing procedures. Great explanation on undercoating as well, so many people believe that it is rustproofing when it’s not, great to use to prevent rick chips and to lessen noise somewhat. I bought a 71 Buick Electra in 1980 that had spent 9 years in Michigan, got it cheap because of the rust, 200.00, ran great, floorboards were almost gone, you could reach inside the trunk from the sides where the quarter panels used to be, got great gas mileage because it weighed about 700 pounds less than when it was new. Keep up the great work, love the humor, great work ethic. Dan.

I had to put outer rockers on both sides of my 2001 Chevy dually when it only had about 70,000 miles, its parked inside every night, and not driven much in winter. (I'm retired) When I did the job, before I welded the outers on, I cleaned up all the scale that was on the inner portion of the rockers that I didn't replace and coated it good, you could plainly see, GM did no rust proofing in the rockers. after I welded the shells on and painted the rockers I used the same product your using and coated the insides of the rockers, my nearly 20 yr old dually still looks great! I just turned 100,000 miles, every time I take it in for service, the mechanics offer to buy it!!! Thankfully, I live in a small village in corn country ILL. we have a long time Chevy dealer with a showroom big enough for 1 car or 1 truck, but not both at the same time. As many dealers get a bad reputation, this dealer is amazing, truly good work, and honest folks working there.

That is a very good detail you have been demonstrating. I live in a state in which it snows two inches and the highway department puts on three inches of salt. You couldn’t imagine the cars and trucks that I see rusted out. Some of them are only a few years old. Some times I think that when the people step on their brakes the body is going to slide off.

Krown works as long as you do it annually or at least every 2 years. I do Krown annually on both my vehicles. I live in Ontario, Canada so salt use, and now brines which stick to the car and can be worse than salt are used all winter long. I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan I've had since 2006. It has been Krowned every year since then. It has the original paint, and is rust free on top and more importantly underneath. It gets messy and dirty working under it, from the oil and dirt that collects, but when every bolt and nut still comes out, I'll deal with the dirt. Rockers, over the rear fenders, the rear hatch and strut towers are all common places these rust. Mine is perfect. Between waxing it twice a year and getting Krown in the fall, I imagine it's one of the best 2000 Caravans in Canada. And I know it's worthless if I sell it, so I'll keep it.

I know you mostly have GM experience. But is there any car built today or last ten years that doesn't or you wouldn't rust proof? Any make or model un crashed repaired state. There is this guy that says his 92 year old mom's Toyota up in NY or NJ that is ten or so years old and isn't rusting because Toyota dips the whole car in a anti corrosion bath. So doesn't need rustproofing . I call B.S. a good dirt road with rocks or salt that isn't washed off a couple three or four times a month it will rust. What do you think?
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 4 года назад
I don't know of any modern vehicle from any manufacture that isn't dipped. Search Toyota frame rust replacement. That will give you some good info for your next conversation with your buddy. I think a one time application in the doors is probably sufficient. Rockers, and undercarriage should be revisited annually. Wash the vehicle, and especially the undercarriage after snow events when the roads are clear.

@eager400 4 года назад
I use fluid film and usually reapply every year. I didn't last year and everything looks good. Just make sure to keep your drain holes on your vehicle clean or they'll trap moister and rust. I usually pressure wash the undercarriage and clean out every drain hole then reapply. Let it sit on a gravel section of my driveway for a day and then I usually don't have to worry about drips.
