as a rule, you should always replace the old grinding stone with a new one. you'll never know the exact condition inside the disc and it might disintegrate and fly apart once it start spinning. not a criticism, just a safety tip i guess. great work btw.

Very useful suggestion. Some grinding stones also have expiration date.
@fredx6678
@fredx6678 5 лет назад
Wheel replacement is absolutely unnecessary. The method to check a grinding wheel is to tap it on the side while static and see if it has a thunk sound. Not a ring like a tight wheel would have. Also, whenever starting up a grinder, stand to the side while it spins up to prevent injury if it does in fact come apart. Again, every time you start a grinder, never stand in front of it.

Well in a way, this was a simple restoration. Disassemble, clean and and remove paint. Change out worn or damaged parts. Repaint and assemble. Pretty much straight forward, but it was so satisfying to watch and the end result was really good. I like how you stuck to the original paint and so on. My ocd is having a wonderful day. The capacitor blew that’s why it wouldn’t start on its own.
@TheWiseDaws
@TheWiseDaws 3 года назад
@Aaron david yes with a capacitor start motor the capacitor is used to help create a rotating magnetic field, then once the motor reaches a set rpm the capacitor is taken out of the circuit and the motor just runs off the single phase power. That’s one of the reasons why three phase motor are so elegant because with the three phases 120 degrees out of phase with each other already produces a perfect rotating magnetic field.
@phillipwright746
@phillipwright746 3 года назад
@Aaron david think of a capacitor like a battery. When you flip the switch to turn on the appliance, the capacitor unloads all its stored energy all at once giving the motor a jump start. Once the motor is turning the normal current takes over and the motor runs on its own.

Hey man, love the videos! As a rule of thumb, I wouldn’t hammer those bearings on like that, you could end up messing up the bearing or the shaft. The best way to install bearings and races is to freeze the shaft if possible and heat the bearing to around 150-200 degrees; it’ll just slide right on and cool down tight, no hammering necessary.

Small security advice: If you attach cables and you're lucky enough they come with ground, always make sure ground is the longest wire. If you trip over the cable and manage to somehow pull out the live wires and they accidentally touch the casing, you do not electrocute yourself. Also your GFCI (if you have one, in german it is FI-Schutzschalter) will pop!

Some types of electric motors need a capacitor to start smoothly. As soon as you asked "Why didn't it start?" I thought "Blown capacitor!" Then, when you discovered that huge capacitor in the silver can that "seemed a little swollen" it reinforced my theory. Replace that big, silver cap. The rating is printed on the cap itself & they're pretty cheap. It's a common repair, especially on items like tumble dryers. Costs pence but has amazing results. It's my first go to when an electric motor won't start without a little nudge.

Translate: I see your videos every week, almost from the beginning of your channel, and I can say that there is constant progress in the restoration and in the way of making the videos. Thank you very much for your work, I'm glad to have found your channel. I would like to see you perform the restoration of some old alarm clock.

I think the right term is soldering, rather than welding. It looked good to me. In fact, the whole restoration looked great, better than the original.

DO NOT REUSE THOSE OLD GRINDER WHEELS. THERE IS NO WAY TO TELL IF THEY WILL FLY APART WITHOUT WARNING. THEY ARE MEANT TO BE DISPOSABLE, THROW THEM OUT. Dead capacitor is the issue. Otherwise great work. I would have left the solid aluminum/magnesium base bare. That would have looked really cool. But it was originally painted, so perfectly fine either way, and it looks great. Also, no music is better.

Those grind stones seem out of balance too, causing unwanted vibrations that could lead to a premature wear of the bearings...

It's totally fine to use old wheels as long as you do the ring test to check for integrity. A newly fitted wheel should be dressed to ensure no vibration.

Get new wheels. They are so loaded with aluminium its time for the bin. Why people insist on grinding alloy on wheels after years of warnings not to is beyond me, Darwin award seekers? Now you have 2 grinders set one up with a linisher belt and a wire wheel for alloy grinding and general cleaning and the other with grinding wheels for steel. Put either or both on a moveable pedestal, so you can move them around to suit and if you do a lot of grinding move outside and not fill your workshop with grinding dust. Nice job.

Personal opinion mate, but honestly I prefer that he voted to maintain some of the original character. But to each their own

Superbe restauration et ça fait plaisir de voir un français faire ce genre de choses. D'habitude je tombe plutôt sur des américains. J'aurai par contre bien aimé vous voir faire quelque chose avec l'appareil.
