Rusty Crude Oil Tractor // PART 3. Ready to Start! 

Hello from Canada. We were taught in high school auto shop class (1970's) to cut gaskets for iron or steel parts by holding the material against the face and then tapping lightly with a ball pein hammer around the edges of the gasket face. The metal will cut a perfect fitted gasket. I still use the technique today.

Thank you, For the old rusty tractor, cleaning up and fixing her up to roll again. That is very cool as I grew up on a farm with old tractors. One was a old 20 regulator it could pull Hell off of its hinges. Piston size of 4 inch bore and a 4.5-inch stroke. Please take care.

Cylinder head looks Happy to get some clean up 5.46😃😎

sometime the head gasket becomes compressed around studs among other things, making it difficult to remove the old gasket and or the head, like a royal enfield, if it is a "stepped"head with a resistive baffling cut into head and cylinder often back then no head gasket was needed ( head without warpage). Most people watching have not worked with a solid copper head gasket before and do not understand annealing the copper making a gasket out of copper or hammer cutting a gasket in general, all good skills to learn. Wonderful old tractor. So refreshing to watch you using spanners without the universal impact gun so favoured nowadays. Spanners and wrenches really give a mechanic the feel of the job. I bet too many modern mechanics over torque stuff. Great channel keep up the good work, from the UK.

I've stripped engines that have had trees growing through them on my channel. I always soak the nuts and studs before applying heat, or the heat burns off all the release oil before it even gets past the first thread. I did damage a couple of threads though, which is when I first heard of ANC threads. What a job to get a hold of in the UK.

My father used to work with and on tractors like this when he was young, working in the fields and also servicing them, those were single-cylinder types (HSCS G-35), but the principle was the same. He speaks no English but I showed him your work and he told me to relay his appreciation. Greetings from Hungary! Keep it up! :)

Great to watch, cool machines you play with. When you heat up copper gaskets you quench them in water, that makes them soft. If you let it cool on its own it,s hard. Totally backwards to any other metal. Just a gear head from Detroit.

Norton gaskets we’re the same copper type we would just clean them off and heat them up. No cracks don’t replace

I'm always fascinated by the design choices of the engineers of this time period. Electric glowplugs in 1947? sure! Recirculating oil for the main bearings? nah, don't need that. I suppose you could just pour the oil back into the fuel tank for the next days work.

This is great I have one of these tractors and have a problem with the engine hunting( from full revs to idol and back to full revs) wish you had posted a few years ago! Do you know where I can get spares for the BM10 my rear axle seal is leaking these tractors are rare in the UK and I don't know why they never exported them the engineering is brilliant. It will be good to hear it mine has not started for a few years you have started me wanting to get on with restoring it again!

To anneal copper, you need to get it cherry red, then throw it into cold water.

When you torque down a head, shoud you start from the center and evenly alternate tightening bolts on each side to the ends?

How often can a copper gasket be reused? I imagine every time it is annealed and installed, it must get progressively thinner and spread out.????

Careful breathing in that exhaust manifold gasket material dust may contain asbestos, at least that is what I've been told.

What is the grey gasket made of that you used on the exhaust manifold? What is the fuel you use in your brass torch? Thank you in advance P.S. I love your show.

with the number of engines you have you could greatly use a sandblasting cabinet setup and then you could actually make some parts clean again

Is the injector timed like for a diesel engine. I know very little about a diesel engine so just guessing that the injectors are timed similar to an ignition on a gasoline engine......????

did you wet down the lung tumor gaskets before scraping them off n blowing them out? they look like asbestos gaskets, if you wet em down its safe, if you leave it to dry out n turn into a powder its dangerous for you and your family, specially while sweeping/wire wheeling

Just a piece of advice, not judging your video's. Could you lock the focus on your camera as it's hunting when you move around.

I appreciate what you are doing. But why wouldn't you invest in a decent parts washer if you intend to work on this type of equipment. You could save a ton of manual labor.
