Rusty motorcycle chain clean and lube 

Perfect. This was top of the search on RU-vid - I thought, this chap knows what he's doing. Perfect for my new old bike 😊

Sound whacky but try Paraffin out for cleaning the chain when it is really mucky. £4 from B&Q for a few litres of it, put it in a 50p B&Q spray bottle and you can really soak the chain, sprockets, etc down with it. It removes all the grease and gunk so quickly. The yanks call it Kerosene and it is quite popular there. It is also great for removing tar spots on the bike, exhaust etc,, and also in moderation on car wheels and paintwork if you are gentle and wash it off quickly :)

Your video's are awesome man. I am good at doing all of the basic maintenance stuff to my bike, but find myself watching your video's anyway for the relaxation factor. Something about a well maintained bike can really put your mind at ease haha.

Very well presented video. I have thought for a long time now that there is no excuse for neglected rusty chains ! Chain lube is a worthwhile investment and not expensive. I did like the idea of warming the chain to soak the lube in. More maintenance videos will be very welcome. All the best Roger

Your cfr250l is the prettiest crf250l that I've seen. I never knew orange looked better than red in that particular year model

I never cleaned chain on a motorcycle, but I did it on bicycle I get the wire brush to clean the rust, but the spray method is so messy. You wasted a lot of lubricant I used to use toothbrush and chain oil , just dip the toothbrush to the oil, stick it to the chain and spin the wheel. Continue dipping the toothbrush when it gets dry , do it underneath and above the chain , job done, nearly no splashes or wasted oil :)

Thanks very thorough ! I found that when using normal off-the-shelf oil based chain lube they act like a muck magnet getting real gloopy quicky. For my sports bike I have a simple method that works great, up on the paddock stand, use Castrol chain cleaner which shifts grease and evaporates fast, just use an old towel (best) or brush when spinning the rear wheel. Once clean, use a light spray of GT85, which you can then periodically use as cleaner+lubricant. Results are great, doesn't attract any muck, chain stays clean and responsive, clean and lube in 5 minutes.

I don’t do a quarter of the work on my chains and been using the same method for 35 yrs and don’t spend much on chemicals either, and never had one go rusty , once a fortnight on average sometimes longer depending on the season , however personal thing I guess and we all do things different , may put a video on my channel in the nr future, explaining what I do , ,, it’s quick and simple ,, but it won’t be a shade of the quality of one of your videos Mr Flyer, as always clear , well presented and spoken thumbs up 👍 cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

I clean the chain on my CRF nearly the same way lol, use a pizza box behind the chain to keep lube and cleaner off the tire! Great video!

Came home from work the other day and noticed my chain looked like I hadn't cleaned it for years. (its only been a couple of weeks since I last cleaned it). I knew that you had a video that dealt with this issue cheers!

Some good cleaning advice there mate. I have used the Worth products and I've used one other I can't remember the name of but I'm now using WD40's range of cleaner and lub and in my opinion it beats the rest hands down. The cleaner is first class. I've got pics of it working before and after and its like the ugly duckling forming into a beautiful swan with very little effort needed to clean it. The cleaner does the job for you. Like you, I use the dry lub. My bike came with a Scot oiler but I never use it, as I prefer to use the wax based stuff. Other than cosmetics, what issue is there with rust on the outside of the links? It's not like you'll remotely ever have enough rust to compromise any of the links structurally, the chain will wear out from regular mechanical friction (due to use) way before that, no? Also, it's an o-ring chain, so the grease is INSIDE the o-rings. Going to town with a wire brush is a sure way to shred the o-ring rubber...

I have the misfortune of not owning a proper garage, my poor bike despite my greatest intentions gets very mild rust appear on places like the brake rotors (away from where the brake pads can connect) Perhaps you might do a video detailing how if necessary you would go about protecting your pride and joy when lacking a garage. Missenden, my chain has black stuff now and it is super hard to get rid off. Its dry black crap on there. I've used degreasers and in still does not come off.

Nice informative video, like your workshop. I must confess I do neglect my chain, keep the bike clean and polished but I tend to avoid dirty jobs, lol will try harder :-)

I have cleaned my chain by cloth after that dust particles are in sprocket if i rotate my wheel i can hear the noise from sprocket how should i remove that dust from. Sprocket

Metal expands when heated. Wouldn’t the lube better penetrate when chain is cold?

Crikey! I was surprised to see how small the rear sprocket is on that CRF. To reduce cost, you can use Kero to clean the chain. Just needs a cloth wipe to get rid of the residue before lubing her up again. Never has it affected the chains O-rings for me. If I get surface rust, I prefer to use steel wool wrapped in my hand as I roll the chain through it as it's less harsh than a wire brush, but obviously that method requires a damn thorough rinse afterwards. After cleaning all the old shit off your chain, if you don't have a blower and want to warm the chain without taking her out and getting it dirty, chuck a paddock stand on your rear bobbins, put her in gear and get the chain running for a few minutes to build some heat into it that way. Just one thing TMF..... make sure you lube your chain from the right hand side of the links too! ;o) Cleaned all three bloody bikes and chains today! Pain in the ass but well worth the aggro.

Brake cleaner, unlike wd40, does weaken and affect the chain o-rings. Just like a wire brush if not very carefully used. But for a dirt bike not used at 100mph on the highway it's fine I guess..

As a southern US owner, I am constantly addressing a bit of splash rust (1/10 of the chain's length) on my bike from rain getting underneath the cover. It's a '92 Honda 750 Nighthawk with a new chain having no more than 2,000 miles.....What's your recommended rule of thumb regarding how often to deep-clean the chain as you did on this video ? My rear brake squeeks when braking coming up to junctions and traffic lights etc and if i push the bike it makes a rubbing or scraping sound. Would the wurth cleaner do the trick or do i need to change the brake pad? I've done 7500 miles on the bike from new but the front brake is completely fine.

I cleaned the chain exactly as you did and lubed with a same dry lubricant about 2 weeks ago,the bike is in a concrete garage with no heating,so its pretty dump ,now the chain is all rusty AGAIN/ this time i will try to clean spray paint then put the dry lube/ ,hope it wont damage the chain.if any clue plz comment.

Discovered some rust on the chain of my Street Triple also. The weather up here in Belgium is (almost) as wet as in the UK I guess! Greetings!

I would never recommend lubing a chain without rinsing off with water after cleaning it, you wouldnt believe the dirt that comes off during the rinse. Also in the final shot i clearly see that your chain links are not nicely in line, indicating that there is lots of friction between the links.

Would not recommend running a metal type wire brush on O-ring chains.

I have coverd 3000 km 2100 miles and my chain links feel like they are binding ever so slightly . I made the mistake of cleaning the chain a lot with brake cleaner . How are your links holding up . Again great videos please keep them coming we want to see more of the crf and how you wash it !

Nice video bud. But purely from a safety point of view, i think you'd have been better putting the bike on a paddock stand, it looked awfully unstable on that scissor jack.
