STEAM is not yet available, but first we may be able to make the first major announcement in the near future. Everyone, please wait for the press release.
Hahaha I love your attitude! I haven't played Rusty but it looks really cool and I love Castlevania so I might try it some day (especially when the remake comes out). Did you say you worked on Darius? I love Darius! I'm a game programmer and seeing you go is very motivating! Thank you :)
@@rickychappell7179 Thank you very much. >If you decide to make a remake or sequel. I could help if you decide to make a game You are the one who mentioned before that you could help us when we remake or make a sequel? I am very happy to do so. I still have multiple things that I am having a very hard time with. By the way, what kind of technology do you have? Programming? Art? Game design? Sound? Sales?
Hi, Basement Brothers. I am the one who created this game 30 years ago. I have all the program code and data from that time and I own the rights to the game. I can re-make it for Windows or Steam if any company wants it. If you have any questions, I can answer them.
@@BasementBrothers If you know of any Rusty community sites, could you point me to them? I know several companies that would like to sell again and would like to see what you guys think about it on the community site. I will read it and consider it.
There is the site for the unofficial English patch for Rusty made by a group called "46 OkuMen". There is another Rusty video on youtube made by a slightly more popular channel called "Sharopolis". Otherwise, the most active English language community for PC-98 in general is probably the Facebook group "NEC PC-98 Club". There are also PC-98 forums on both fullmotionvideo.free.fr and nfggames.com, but neither one is very active anymore. EDIT: Also maybe /r/PC98 on reddit. There are generally not very many active resources about PC-9801 available in English.
A note for people who still use the actual PC-9801 machine. It uses a hardware feature called EGC in Rusty. This feature has been available since PC-9801VX (R, D, F, B series, all PC-9821) And on Epson compatible machines, it has been available since PC-386S. Rusty is a hybrid-compatible program that automatically detects the hardware configuration and runs on models that do not have EGC. However, the PC-9801VM and Epson PC-286 series are not equipped with EGC, so they run extremely slowly. For this reason, the supported models in the package are VX or later. I know of very few PC-9801 games that use the EGC function. Even in NEC's reference manual, it is an omitted feature, and there is almost no accurate technical information available. When playing Rusty on a real machine, I recommend 9801DA, DS, FA, FS, BA, etc. and CPU of 386SX or 386DX or higher if possible. PC-9821 series is the best environment.
@@ZX3000GT1 The background cells are transferred between VRAM to VRAM at high speed. However, since EGC can only be used in 16-bit units, EGC is only used for even numbers in the horizontal direction and not for odd numbers (multiples of 8 pixels). Therefore, when stopping or getting caught in a rope, the position is adjusted to be even when the number is odd.
@@naopapa3428 This is also one of the reasons why the AT (IBM PC compatible) version has higher processor requirements than the VX version. VGA has no such acceleration, relying entirely on software rendering. Though, there exist some tricks with VGA latches that allow for faster planar writes which could be implemented if we had the source code of TMix and Rusty.
@@Spaztron64 VGA doesn't use planar VRAM or tile graphics it uses bitmap graphics and what was called back then "chunky pixels". There was one big block of VRAM and each pixel was one byte (in 256 color mode) that referenced one entry in a color lookup table. Smooth scrolling was accomplished by writing an off screen strip and then moving where the display started in memory. So you weren't moving the bitmap graphics rather you were moving the screen around it a line at a time.
@@atomicskull6405 Packed pixel usage isn't universal across all VGA video modes. You have packed modes like 13h and Mode X, while modes like 12h (640x480 16color) are planar. I should know, I wrote programs for this :)
@@gregledbetter5942: I for one loved _Super Castlevana 4_ , _Bloodlines_ , _Symphony of the Night_ , and _Lament of Innocence_ . As for _Dominion Tank Police_ , I'm only familiar with some of the 1989 anime OVA dubbed and formerly licensed by the now-defunct Central Park Media and some of the '90s OVA series.
This probably demonstrates how old I am but I can not hear the name "Ryoko" without thinking the bad guys actually kidnapped a supernaturally-powerful space pirate who will go ballistic if she sees another girl making moves on Tenchi.
Wow. The animation is a little choppy, but it looks great. Love that 90's era anime bikini armor. Great homage to Castlevania. And Rusty clearly has a whole team of hairstylists on retainer!
Never knew this game even existed so I really appreciate the overview. Never owned the hardware of course growing up in the US, but had I come across the DOS version I’m sure I would’ve loved it back then. Definitely one I just put on my list to try and emulate. Looks like this video is doing really well too congrats!
@@standing720s4 There are people who are able to speak more than one language. Maybe he lives or lived in Japan during his childhood and is telling his story in a way many people can understand it? Or maybe yeah, he's remembering other game lol
@@standing720s4 Meh, could be a Mandella affect, I do remember seeing something like this in stores. The thing I remember most about it was my mother shouting at me in a store about it, looking like a Lunatic. It was the same store I got my VHS of Vampire Hunter D and IRA.
On the page "15 Best PC 98 Games Of All Time - Retro Dodo", I found "Rusty" ranked 7th. I looked at it in dismay, not knowing what it was. This game was really popular in foreign countries...
- We don't have money to hire professional VA - Let's have them voiced by our staff instead - But the voice will be bad, people won't like it - Don't worry, they won't notice, just compress the hek out of it
News flash, you elitists, the voice acting talents all had to get their acting chops somewhere and, furthermore, when movies first began to have people talking, they were honestly all kind of horrible until people began to have a better handle of that then new form of media.
I feel like "Castle in the Clouds" took a TON of inspiration from this title. While CitC is known more for being a Castlevania clone itself, many elements of the game seem more influenced by Rusty.
Never heard of this one before, but it looks like a real classic. Think they were huge Konami fans in general, as well. That mine cart boss is definitely swiped from Gradius II.
Really impressive work there, Rusty really was a great game in its own right. I agree that was a shame it never got a release to the West. Regardless, it's still worth to check it out, just remember to use the English patch for an easy understand! HAHAHAHA
I've never heard of this game before. It's really interesting! I'm enjoying trying to find where the devs pulled their "inspirations" from throughout the game. The second stage's background looks so close to stage 1 of Ghouls 'n Ghosts and the fire swirls in the stage 5 mine cart section look like they were pulled from Life Force/Salamander. These are the kind of games I'd love to see get a re-release on modern platforms instead of the same popular classic ports we seem to get over and over. This was a great video, thanks for putting it together!
For some unknown reason, I just look at Rusty's Retirement on steam and this pop up. Although it is different game altogether but I am satisfied by this video essay about the actual Rusty on PC-98.
For some reason I always thought Rusty had adult content in the cutscenes. That's probably just a stereotype of PC-98 games but certainly one I've unexpectedly run into *cough*Briganty*cough*.
Now you know better! It's really kind of a shame that Briganty has adult scenes (and really raunchy ones too, I might add), because it's a great game that probably loses a lot of potential players nowadays because of them. Unfortunately, adult scenes really were a selling point at the time in Japanese PC games. The company that made Briganty actually closed down their non-adult game label (TGL) while leaving their adult one (Giga) alive for a few years before completely ceasing game development. Presumably that's because their adult games were more profitable. (The company still exists as "TGL", BTW, but they haven't made games in decades.)
@@BasementBrothers It's sad what happened to TGL, even if they still exist as an IT company (along with others suffering that fate like SystemSoft). Their Taiwan branch became Winking, a very successful contractor who still does their own Heroine Anthem games on the side. WRT ero-content stereotyping of J-PC games, it's slowly dwindling off as more of the non-ero/milder software gets more attention & context (ex. fan translations). It's so much easier to glance at the art these games had, particularly the fancy eroge ADVs, and discount those which relied more on crunching numbers or which went for more Westernized/less overtly cute art-styles. Videos like this & what I do on Twitter should hopefully encourage a lot more folks to not just joke about PC-98 games being all Touhou or porn (though I will say some ADVs like Doukyuusei genuinely benefit from having sex scenes insofar as they aid character development, and I really enjoy that when it happens).
I too finally got this one running.... on a modded PlayStation Classic. It runs really well & even has the synthesized speech! I tested it on the new AutoBleem v1.0.0 & am VERY pleased with it's performance 👍.
Stuff like this gives me tons of nostalgia for something I never experienced. Gives those strong vibes from the mid 90s where I was a very dorky kid super into gaming and Japanese culture in general and pouring over magazines covering games/anime that never came stateside.
I know that box art! Well not really know but recognize. I remember back in the day before Anime became popular. I would be fascinated with anything I could get my hands on and to this day I often come across information on something I only had a few screen shots. Anyways this was super cool to watch and to finally put a name to a face to an old picture 😊
So this is what they mean when they say a game has SOUL. I usually see screenshots of PC-98 adventure games and I marvel at how great the atmosphere is with limited resources. In a way, I believe those limitations only enhanced the artists' creativity. If someone reading this comment has any recommendation on more great pc-98 games translated in english, I'm here. Going back to RUSTY, I'd would have loved to play this back in the day and even now I'd give it a try...but I'd probably want a sequel with improvements even more. The video is so well presented it made the creator answer. Great work!!!!
@@carlosaugustodinizgarcia3526 one thing to keep in mind is that this translation is shaky at best, at at worst he just made up shit; He had no real JP knowledge and was laughed out of the community, and so you can't download his patches anymore officially-speaking. TL;DR play this translation knowing its a joke and don't take it seriously. Slowbeef attempted to do a better translation but it never came to fruition because he needed more people helping him.
Mr Jakes, these time capsules are truly paradise. I barely got to experience the goodies of the early 90s, so I missed most of these titles, let alone japan-exclusives like Rusty. Keep up the fine job, Basement Bros ✌🏼
I'm sure there is a literal 100 lifetimes worth of awesome Japanese games that we will never ever get in the English speaking parts of the world. A whole nother planet's worth of gaming content, completely untapped! One day, when auto translation tech becomes truly worthwhile & accurate, we may finally have a way to enjoy these games! That's realistically the only way we will ever get to experience most of them I imagine. The fan translation community hasn't even begun to scratch the surface of what's out there, although they do their very best & I can't thank them enough for what they have given us!
It bugs me a liitle that on the cover art and in the sprites, Rusty wears dark blue and has green hair, but in the cutscenes she wears red has brown hair. Also she seems more like a seductress in the box art, but a lot more innocuous in the cutscenes, like a normal young anime young woman who happens to wear dominatricks stuff.
Nice game to formally start the sequel? spin-off? Of PC-88 Paradise. Rusty is probably one of the most accessible games to play on the system (for western audiences). I would say that pixel art peaked with the PC-98, rusty is an early game but still has it's charm. However some later games just look gorgeous. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the limited 15 colors per screen and high resolution of the system.
I've been exploring the soundtracks of older lesser-known games for computers, and this game always pops up. I've been listening to the soundtrack a bunch, and got this video as a recommendation. Such an interesting and well-made video and a great community I've stumbled into.
Great video! Rusty is one of those hidden gems that got me interested in the PC-98 along with Policenauts. I've never finished it though. It's pretty tough and I need to give it another try. Keep up the great work!
After played this game I must say, it feels somewhat better than some old CV for the most part. I'd say that this game just aged better despite its flaws. It kinda feels like a mix of Jill of the jungle and the old Castlevania.
I am quite surprised Sega never considered porting it to one of their systems. As they loved porting Japanese PC games that were similar to Nintendo titles. Speaking of which are you ever planning to cover Golvellius in the future?
Thanks for a great video! Rusty looks really cool, in spite of how much it straight up copied from Castlevania. What a shame we didn't get a long running series of these games.
A shame this was never ported to the Mega Drive or PC Engine. With smoother scrolling and a bit of tweaking to Rusty's movement, this game could've really shined on other platforms!
The graphics in this look slightly vertically stretched; not just the game, but the cut scenes and maps as well. Notice how round objects aren't actually perfectly circular, but oval instead. Edit: It looks like the "MS-DOS" version is at the right ratio, with the black bars at the top and bottom.
This game to me is like the Thexder 2 of PC-98's. The music is pretty impressive for the platform, Rusty shares a very similar flying buddy power up that helps you in battle as Thexder 2, and I just think these games are the standout action games on their respective systems. I do agree with the control having some flaws however. I'm also not that big of a fan of games that don't have a balance of speed in their movement. Though I can get over and enjoy everything about this game, like also the very nice looking graphics.
Which is funny given that Brandish & Lagoon were mainly J-PC games to start with. The intersection between certain J-PC creatives & '90s console "hidden gems" is deeper than a lot of people realize.
Just like the good old days her hair and leotard color constantly changed. A certain other green haired woman in Final Fantasy land had the same issue.
Hi, Basement Brothers. The PC-9801 version of the game screen is "640x400", so the correct aspect ratio is "768x480 or 640x(Center)400", which is 1.2 times the horizontal aspect ratio of the game movie. The PC/AT (MS-DOS) version is centered, so the current screen is correct.
Thanks for your suggestion. I understand that some players prefer "pixel perfect" mode, but I prefer to squish the horizontal aspect ratio so that it looks more similar to a 4:3 monitor. I just tried your suggestion, though, and Rusty in particular does look pretty good in "pixel perfect" mode (probably because the character Rusty is so skinny). The circles like the moon at 17:58 might also look a little more circular like that too, but might be my imagination. But, regardless, I always use the same 4:3 setup on my RGB upscaler for all PC-98 games... for consistency's sake. In most PC-98 games the characters look too fat to me in "pixel perfect" mode.
@@BasementBrothers I see, Right, I understand. With a PC-9801-specific display, there are black areas at the top and bottom. These are cathode ray tubes such as KD-854 and TV-451. With LCDs, there are very few that match perfectly, and they extend vertically, like the MEGA-Drive (Genesis).
Really? There are supposed to be black areas at the top and bottom on a PC-98 CRT monitor? I have seen images where people have it set up like that, but I was not aware that is the correct way. Aren't the black areas quite a waste of space then? Why design it that way? Are the KD-854 and TV-451 also compatible with 640x480?
Overall the color in some stage could have been better in some way at least scrolling and rain is still fine Dragon knight 4 in future? Since pc98 version is the more superior one if not wrong
Nice video on this obscure game. In my humble opinion, I'd like to think of _Rusty_ as a _Castlevania_ clone that was made by Telenet Japan, the people behind the _Valis_ franchise. I think an conversion and international release on the Sega CD, the Saturn, and/or OG PlayStation of this game would have been ideal.
Now that I've clicked on like before even watching the video I can say that it's always a good day when there's a new @Basement Brothers video out. By the way I ways 'like' @Basement Brothers' videos before I watch them. Never have I ever regretted it. So, now, let me watch it.
@@BasementBrothers Something like Wild Guns Reloaded or Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors would be especially awesome. Keep it pixelated, but increase the color pallette, improve the shading, add more frames of animation, and display it all in widescreen.
Looks cool, but like a lot of games, it shows more behind the character than in front. I wish they would switch that. I have a feeling this would help with your main complaint about the speed as well.
Ah man, I loved Complaint of Guiltlessness for the GameStation 2. It is my favorite, right after Hex of Light´s Absence. So sad when Leona had to sacrifice her husband to create the Carlo Killer.
Hey! Friendly neighborhood MSX fanboy here again, with more MSX Fun Facts(tm). Heheh. Actually, I should first say that this was an awesome video -- I'm certainly familiar with Rusty (it's hard to be into retro Japanese PC gaming and NOT be familiar with it!), but I've never actually played it, so it's interesting to see it in action and get a really thorough look at how it works under the hood. The approach to running... sounds pretty obnoxious, NGL, and I'm not sure how well I'd be able to get used to that. But other than that, it looks like an awesome time, and a game I would REALLY enjoy playing! On the MSX front, you may think I have nothing to talk about that would be Rusty-related... but actually, there exists a Rusty clone for MSX! It's called "Noname" (yes, really), and is an indie homebrew game from prolific Spanish homebrew developer Oscar Kenneth Albero Ingles, better known as KAI Magazine -- though it's actually a vintage homebrew from him, as it was developed back in the late '90s! It's... nowhere near as good as Rusty, which is something I'm sure KAI himself would agree with. And it's also an EXTREMELY SMUTTY R18 game -- the cutscenes are some of the best-animated on the entire MSX platform, TBH, but a solid half of them are just straight-up hardcore sex scenes, with undocumented keyboard toggles to change... erm... positions. Yeah. The game is still worth playing, though, if only for the absolutely RIDICULOUS story and the "incredible" translation. See, the game was developed in Spanish, and translated to English... and it's a very rough translation, but it's absolutely HILARIOUS. I actually recorded the entirety of the intro (which is... mostly R18-free!) here, many years ago, because I couldn't stop laughing at the absolutely amazing dialogue. If you're so inclined, I highly recommend checking it out, as I'm quite certain you'll get a good laugh out of it. The video ID on RU-vid is HA4iPTX0968. The game itself is also... fine. Though it only plays at a decent pace on a Turbo R system (it's EXTREMELY SLUGGISH, to the point that it's barely playable, on an MSX2 or MSX2+), and fair warning, just about all of the music in it is MSX FM arrangements of music from other games (including Rusty's iconic stage 1 theme, arranged to MSX FM for Noname's stage 1!). Even the above-linked intro uses the classic pop song "Just Can't Get Enough" as BGM, for some reason. ;) Oh, the game also has a number of secret passages leading to items, but if you don't backtrack and take the regular path through each stage after you're done exploring them, the boss won't ever show up. So, yeah... it's buggy, on top of everything else. Despite all of these complaints, though, I still do recommend it. It's an experience! And even with all the hardcore sex scenes, the intro and ending alone make the whole game worthwhile. And if you're looking for more Rusty action... well, this isn't quite that, but it's a decent enough gas station brand substitute, so it'll at least sate your hunger a little bit. ;) Just figured I'd let you know!
Hahaha. Never heard of it. Sounds... interesting. :) And running Rusty is really not that big a deal. If you're playing on an emulator, the hard drive images out there are mostly set up so you can just boot them and you'll get the voices. On a real PC-98, you've pretty much just gotta run the installer and then boot the system with the system disk inserted. No biggie. Also if you have an extra hard drive partition, you can just go ahead and set it up with the boot files from the system disk and have an all-in-one Rusty bootable hard drive disk with the voices working (just like the emulator hdd images).
@@BasementBrothers Oh, yeah, my friend Michelle gave me disks of the English-patched version all set up and ready to go, I just never got around to checking them out before giving my PC-98 back to her (yes, sadly, I am PC-98less now!). So if I were to play this (and I very well may one of these days!), it would be via emulation, sadly. ...And yes, I know it must hurt to hear that I gave the PC-98 back, but at least I didn't sell it or anything! I gave it back to my friend who has a lot more time and patience than I do, who already owns other PC-98s but will still no doubt make good use of the Epson formerly owned by me. I simply don't play enough games these days to justify collecting for multiple retro PCs, and as I'm already in so deep with MSX collecting, and I can readily output my MSX to my big-screen HDTV with minimal effort and a shockingly high-quality signal (something I definitely could not do with the PC-98!), I chose MSX. It was an easy choice, in retrospect, but only because I got such a huge head-start with MSX. Were I to have started collecting for PC-98 way back when, things could've turned out very differently now! That's part of why I love watching these videos of yours, though. They help show me what could've been. I can enjoy these games vicariously through you! Heheh.
Anyone else get the strong feeling that the image is squished horizontally? If I do a screenshot and stretch it to 16:9, everything looks much more natural. Might even improve the feeling of the controls. Seriously, even the orb and everything else that's obviously supposed to be round is egg-shaped. It's like the engine is running in widescreen mode. EDIT: 21:29 Even the screenshot on that site shows a wider aspect ratio than 4:3. Probably whatever aspect ratio japanese screens had at the time.
I really like the 90's anime art style of this game. This game possibly wouldn't have been allowed on Nintendo's systems back then for being too sexy. If it was released today, it would not be allowed on Sony's systems for being sexy and being anime.
Nonsense, Nintendo of Japan would allow stuff like this without issue (Super Famicom had more naughty material like Dragon Knight IV released). Only the western branch had this paranoia about sexy stuff. They toned down it in some games yes, but never butched it like their western counterpart.
That guy's name is Gato or translated to portuguese: Cat Or as some girls here in Brazil called handsome guys in early 2000's: Gato Or as some guys here in Brazil called beautiful girls in early 2000's: Gata Anyway, this one is an interesting game
I am late for this, but something hit me, the name of the characters are motifs based on foods, which means Gateau means cake in French, wanted to point that out since you skipped it, and I am suspecting maaayyyybe Rusty is a play on "rustic fries", but that's probably an stretch. I guess the C-Lab guys REALLY love their food motifs lol.
Yeah, I misspelled Gateau's name in the video. Messaging with the dev later after the video he confirmed it was "Gateau". Rusty's name, though, has a more complicated meaning, he says. "Rusty Sprinkool". "Rusty" as in "old", "rustic". Yet new at the same time ("spring", "cool").
@@BasementBrothers oh hey! I didn't expect to see you answering me, well that's an interesting portmanteau of words, unfortunately that means she's not named after food
There was a certain charm to the in game art style from back then that I wish never went away. I never played this game, but I am of course speaking of a lot of the old mega drive/genesis RPGs of the time. Phantasy Star 2, 3, 4. Shining Force 1 and 2, Langrisser, to name the few off the top of my head that still ring out in my mind. The it felt magical back then seeing these unfamiliar designs combined with these large epic tales, and sometimes dramatic as well, gaming was so different back then. Everything was a artistic expression more so than a corporate product factory.
I definitely know what you mean. Partly it was the Japanese manga-ish style that had practically no other way of making its way to the West at the time other than in-game artwork here and there. Of course being only a teenager at the time, many things that I may have found rather mundane had I been an adult seemed rather magical at the time. Thanks for watching.
Not only is this game borrowing from Castlevania, but I swear the bit of music I heard at 12:46 sounded a bit like one of the songs from Gargoyle's Quest (the first level theme--I forget if that tune was also in Ghosts n' Goblins or not) as well. I love when Rusty calls out her item crash attack names... somehow they remind me of the voice from Thunder Force II thru IV. _Side-oh Braster! CRAW!_ And her "Yatta" just feels so Chun-Li.
Yeah, the developer informed me later that the voices are actually SSG. You're incorrect though about the hard drive, though. Voices will work fine from the hard drive as long as the necessary sound driver is loaded. The footage I have in the video with the voice acting is running from the HDD. I was even able to create a bootable hard drive partition that boots directly to Rusty with the voices working by copying all the boot files from the system floppy. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the answer. You are absolutely right. To start the game from the HDD with voice acting, the HSB, XMS and EMS drivers must not be loaded and the BUFFERS value in CONFIG.SYS must be equal to or less than 10.
It seems that Rusty borrows a lot of graphics from the Sega Genesis game, "Alyssa Dragoon." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5Kog7RhIGFo.html
The eye catching title, good video going into good detail and depth of the game, and good game is definetly helping the video and the games popularity.
Love looking at these old Japanese Personal Computer Games. Sadly most are not able to be played due to the technology being ancient and hard to find the Roms these days unless if you know where to look. Also Rusty looks like a classic 90s H-Heroine.
The name Monte Carlo is derived from the name of the place famous for the Monaco Grand Prix, but it is actually derived from the Monte Carlo method, a random number method named by Neumann, the father of the computer.
Very convenient that whipping the seven shades of hell out of a woman transformed into a monster turns her back human with no ill effects instead of leaving her horribly maimed...
The only PC-98 game I own is the original uncensored version of the hentai shmup Steam Hearts (notable for having art by Kimura Takahiro, who'd later go on to find mainstream fame as character designer for Code Geass). That cost me £200 on its own, so you getting a whole batch of games for under $100 leaves me envious.
That's the same question I had! I guess they literally needed just some of her blood. They didn't kill her. That's far too PG. Haven't they seen the opening of Rondo of Blood?
Boss and Monte Carlo are assimilated with the kidnapped girls. So, when you defeat the enemy, you return to the original girl. The ball is the very body of the girl who became like an egg. It is easy to understand if you think of it as Dragon Ball fusion. lol Gateau also gives you a ball when you beat him, but it doesn't really mean anything (laughs).
