Going to have to pay the piper today. After a good 6 months or more of neglect Doofa Now is back in the garage in major need of some life support. Can it make a comeback or is it Dunfa Good?

Glad to see you back at it again, Cam! The brushed finish from the surface conditioner roller looks great and helps minimize the appearance of the pitting (at least on camera). If etching high build primer is not the next step, that would be the treatment for bare metal. Good luck cleaning it all up, looks like no easy task!

Yes probably mis-spoke there - have a relatively high build 2k etch primer (Concept Paints) so that will go down before any fillers, and once flattened out it'll get another coat of normal HS primer

Rust Gels Ive used - Metal rescue rust removal Gel works quite well. non toxic so not sure if it's molasses based. Also the Norglass metal etch cleaner (also a gel) works well and is phosphoric acid based, its a marine product. Both of them you can put on vertical surfaces and cover with glad wrap to stop them dry out and both are effective at removing rust. The metal rescue does mean you have to wash off a sticky mess tho.

Did try to get some metal rescue Gel but struggled with a supplier. Will definitely keep it in mind for future projects tho. Managed to get a decent process going on with the deox tho. Thanks for the tips!

Don't worry it's all back to pretty sweet clean metal now - just about to start the process of getting it protected. BTW - the Datsun is looking sweet mate, the chrome is striking on that red 👍👍👍

Big picture. You can do VC and Doofa the same color. At least underneath. Spit roast them both. And Raptor both undersides at the same time. As for the top 2k prime it that will give you time to go color shopping. Bare metal is so last summer. Welcome back. O.

You should try Evaporust gel for rust removal. As far as paint You should do Delorean brushed finish with Matte clear!

I have used Evapo-rust before but only on small stuff soaking - where are you getting your Gel?

Cool car, personally I’d be going for the full paint job. Do it once and forget it. Pros and cons to all the options though.

Definitely won't be a forever paint job if i do paint it - this one will end up on the rotisserie at some point but Violet Crumbles need to come off. At the moment its a toss up between 100% paint or something that might be like 70/30 paint/cleared metal. Should know at the end of the weekend.

Oooof… this was a hard thing to see.. Paint it. I have a massive soft spot for it - and I hate the bare metal look. I had one of these as my first car - he was red and named Sid. Unfortunately I didn’t really know how to drive aged 17… so Sid met a rapid catastrophic end. Since then I’ve had a ‘74, a ‘93 and currently an immaculate white ‘98 ZR named Celine - sleek, shiny, classy and everything a Celica embodies…. Paint it!

It's definitely going to get SOME paint, and clear all over so it doesn't rust but there might still be a few little bits of metal showing through the clear. Luckily all the rust is gone now and it's looking pretty sweet.

+1 for some actual paint. Definitely sad to see it so rusty. I thought the metal finish and spitfire stickers were only temporary 🙈 time to turn it from what looks like a kids car into a grown ups

Cam I know exactly what its like to have an idea about the car and even if I know its not ideal… I go with it anyway. The stainless is so cool but this car would come up an absolute treat and last forever with some bodywork and paint. Otherwise it’s probably going to end up looking like this again in a few years

I would be clear coating (paint) the bare metal so this won't happen again, my main issue is if I'm painting I'm going to pull the doors, engine, hatch etc, and while I'm in there I'm going to be thinking I should change the engine while I'm at it, suspension etc. It becomes a long term project i can't move fast on. Violet Crumbles is already one of those that I can get back to if I move through this quicker, and I'll circle back to the RA28 down the track and it'll get a proper paint job.

So far it looks like paint is the popular answer, although I feel like clear, then RA23, then come back to the RA28 later to paint is better for the viewers.

Yeah good long term celica content which is always a good watch But definitely needs to go in paint in the end I know about long term projects got my 28 on a rotisserie now

Sorry to see it get to this state, but at least it made for some more interesting content! Have you tried any of the rust gels? It would be good to see how they compare with the rust converting process you went through. Still won't get rid of the pitting though. My vote would be the drum sand and clear coat for now.

I'm eager to see what the drum sanding will do but it depends on popular opinion. Clear coating metal seems like it gives both options as I'd still paint it with color down the track but we'll see

I've never done it myself, but could you apply a clear wrap? Would it be worth the time and money, if only temporary?

I think clear wrap would be OK if you polished the metal, but if the surface isn't smooth i'd be concerned about getting moisture under it. Would be an interesting experiment though!

Firstly, you need to do is get someone to give you a full open hand round house slap to the face, then get that surface rust off and seal it with epoxy. That pitting is making me feel nauseous.

Lol, slap recieved. You'll be pleased to know its rust free now and is just getting some panel work done before I throw on some primer.
