Reporting from Todos Santos, Mexico! Part of being a great rider is being comfortable in all different types of terrain, so Simon sends Linnea down a rutted-out 4x4 road full of loose rocks. Today is all about correct body position and analyzing line options.
Key Takeaways:
1. Stay relaxed and look up
2. Widen your stance
3. Let the bike move underneath you and glance off terrain
4. If you get into a rut, wait for a natural "out"
Get easy access to Simon's most famous teaching points as you follow Fluidride’s @linnearooke through her learning progression, and gain insights for your own riding.

ABOUT SIMON LAWTON
Following his own Pro Downhill mountain bike racing career, Simon Lawton (Owner and Founder) has spent the last 25 years analyzing the top riders in the world to understand the tiniest details that contribute to their greatest successes, and also any weaknesses that are holding them back. With an exceptional understanding of kinesiology, Simon has developed his own teaching curriculum that explains the incredible relationship between human and machine. He has trained top pro mountain bike racers across the world, and his foundational techniques apply equally to beginner riders. His on-bike drills allow you to break down complex skills on the bike and develop correct techniques.

ABOUT LINNEA ROOKE
Linnea has been racing locally in the pro category, but until this year she had almost no formal training and was held back by major gaps in her technique. While she was able to carry speed well on straight downhills and high-bermed turns, she lacked foundational cornering skills and was timid in the air. In Feb 2020, she met up with Fluidride to help with a filming trip in Baja, and was fascinated by Simon's teaching methods. Wanting to be part of this mission, she left her career in healthcare in July 2020 to officially join the Fluidride team as COO. We started filming this series to document her journey of cleaning up bad habits, adding new skills to her toolkit, and chasing her dream of riding with style.

Creek crossing is much the same (my experience is more motor bikes than MTB on creeks tho). I see people almost stop on creeks that are usually about 6" deep on average... the trick is actually to avoid the rises where threes a visible rock.. but basically just ride through and let the bike bounce off the rocks.. more speed keeps you upright, less gives your weight enough time to get off centre before the bike corrects itself.. and your stepping in the wet. You basically try to avoid the big bits and the smaller ones the bike just rolls around/over/off and you naturally stay on. Less speed, more chance the bike will stop or deflect further to a side.

Great video and I've found many of my crashes have been with similar SoCal loose rocks (sometimes sharp and sometimes rounded slippery rivers rocks) and steep rutted downhills where it's difficult to control your speed. Drop into one of those deep ruts and it's all over. You didn't mention brakes even once so maybe a comment on how or if you want to control your speed. I know there's an advantage to not going too slow but with speed comes higher consequences if you do mess up. I did appriate the wide stance and looking ahead recommendations. Seems once I fall on one of these I tend to avoid them in the future instead of facing my fear. Thanks.

Hola Nico! SO much like Parvacito, although I think there is more grip in Mexico than in the Andes! Your trails taught me how to do this my friend!

Great vid. It seems that so much of this is about committing with confidence.

yes so true! And thank you for watching! Approaching sections like this with confidence makes a huge difference; and especially being able to stay relaxed when the bike bounces around a bit 👍

To add to your confidence, try driving the outside knee forward. Nothing says "I want to be here" like moving 'into' the bike instead of away from it. Once you get it dialed, riding is never the same. -Simon

Is that the new Evil Offering you are riding? New bike? You should do a bike check on that for sure, especially since everybody is chasing the new Evils as they sell out the day they are released.

Hey Matt. We will do something about technical climbing, but this particular series has a very set focus which we outlined at the beginning. We are helping Linnea get faster at Enduro and better with her jumping, so climbing isn't a part of this one. We do teach technical climbing in our clinics and have information in our online school as well. We'll be sure to add something free for the YT crowd when we get time. Thanks for chiming in. -Simon

steep descents with ruts and loose rocks.... not the best combination. Surely the kryptonite of most riders

Oh yes indeed. And possibly very narrow single track as well. A staple in Slovenia natural mtb/mountaineering paths.
