For me the biggest tip is to actually train/practice skills rather than just getting on your bike and ride. If you want to learn manuals it’s way more efficient to practice them on tarmac for an hour than to go for a spin and try to do one a here and there. Same goes for cornering, take a flat corner and try to hit it a tiny bit faster every run. Focusing on technique rather than speed for a few runs helps a lot as well.

This may sound silly, but riding on different bikes improved my skills. Different bikes have different characteristics and dynamics. It accentuated the strengths and weaknesses of different setups and alignments that helped me understand setting up bikes. For example, the difference different tires make, or using longer or shorter stems. Or, riding between ht and full suss. Learning different dynamics of bikes upgraded my riding skills and the ability to comprehend the best setup for me.

I just wanted to add, I'm lucky enough to own several bikes. Riding 1 bike today and then riding another the next day really accentuated the differences of dynamics that helps you pick those characteristics up. 1 of my bikes are really easy for jumps and hops, and another is easy for wheelies

Definitely does. Nothing silly about it. Trying different bikes with different parts gives one a better feel for what works for them in terms of parts selection and dynamics. The experience with different dynamics can help to optimise riding style. For those who aren't lucky enough to have multiple bikes, just playing around with tyres can get this some of this experience. I didn't end up loving the tyre (and combination) I expected to.

That doesn't sound stupid at all that's exactly how I improved, I'd say even riding dirtbikes and all sorts of other two wheeled contraptions is always fun and a sure way to learn new things 😊

You're one of the few who understand bicycle dynamics and setup! 👍 these things are critical to improving riding skills.

not silly to me. my handling skiils have improved lots. i once used my 80s road bike on a muddy ride with my friends. i was slow on the straight, i was sinking, but on the corners the thin tires just dug into the mud no hard and i sent it anound all the flat muddy turns while all my friends slowed down so much so not to wash out

Never rush in to something but also don’t sit and think about it too long. rushing makes mistakes and thinking creates fear

Find a feature you need to work on and session the crap out of it. Once you get it semi dialed in find a new a slightly more difficult feature. Use the stoke from one to start learning another with less fear/overthinking.

I personally would recommend a high tire pressure for flowy trails, because a low pressure will slow you down a bit

Concrete, concrete corners and pipes are harder than grass and dirt. Wear protection.

Do the M check before riding. I like to do it the night before then I’m not in a rush and miss something.

Wear protection gear. Every time I go for a spin I find something interesting and stupid and can just try it over and over again and not get hurt despite falling all the time. Having good protection ( knees, pants, plates, elbow, fullface) helps with confidence and testing the limits e.g. of grip and experiencing how it feels when you start to slide and how you can control it. without crushing your knees and hip.

Don't be scared to crash, cash and crash again, learn what you did for each of them at it will A: Teach you what hurts, B: Why it hurts and C: Not to do it again.

30% sag for the rear shock is too much especially for beginners. Most full suspension Riders do not ride hard technical Trails the majority of them ride very easy to intermediate single track. What you're going to get is a rear that squats way too much. Unless you're riding downhill or super hard technical 25% rear sag is more than adequate. As you progress up to an expert and you ride more difficult challenging Trails than you may occasionally set sag at 30%. Somewhere between 15% and 24% for the for the front fork and maybe 22% to the 25% for the rear shock. Again preload will depend on weight. But the main consideration is to make sure that the bike is balanced with regard to sag front to rear.

Learn to manual and wheelie so when someone yells out "Crack a mono!" you can rip out a banger and become an instant legend. 😜👍 (I am actually being serious, it happens a lot on my rides)😊

Hello, I have a question to ask you, I'm 14 and I am just starting to get into mountain biking, my dad told me he bought a 2014 specialized demo 8 carbon fiber mountain bike and never used it, he gave it to me, is it a good downhill mountain bike?
