That was especially interesting. I'm part Cherokee and it's appropriate that they used it as a medicine first. Tobacco is a sacred gift from Creator. A small amount of tobacco would be put in the mouth of the healer followed by some water. Then they would blow a mist of the mixture onto the afflicted person. Or get some and chew it a bit and put on bee stings. The pipe ceremony was used to welcome guests and to send up prayers. And finally, as an offering. When we harvest sage we leave an offering of sacred tobacco behind. Those who worked with it must be of a pure and happy spirit. And a big difference, they didn't inhale it or smoke all day. It was sacred. The misuse by society made a vice out of a gift. I loved the snuff jar shaped like corn😂
Wanrong smoked a lot of cigarettes' and opium throughout her life so that couldn't have been good for her body. I wonder if Wanrong would have used a hookah if she couldn't get access to cigarettes'? Not only that, but I also wonder if the use of tobacco from the late Ming Dynasty through the Qing Dynasty contributed to any of the health problems the nobles, imperial consorts, and emperors experienced?
Interesting video as always! Honestly, when I saw the empress dowager smoking, I thought this was something that only she was allowed to do, since no one else is shown smoking in the series. Maybe the producers thought it would be nice to add something extra to her character. I did notice that the empress dowager in Ruyi seems inspired by Cixi, at least on her looks.
Fascinating video. Thank you for making this video. May I ask what the second thing is that Southerners found weird about the Manchurians. Thank you again for this video. Was smoking recorded in the Ming court before the last emperor?
Thank you for This Video. It´s interesting that the Imperial Womon was smoking befor it comes up in the West Nobel World. To smoke Tabacco is besser as smoke a Cigarette. If this Hookah from Cixi is curse, if it were nice to Know, it were use sometimes by her Ghost. Nice Person or not, i think smestimes it´s better to bring all her Stuff back to her Tomb. Thank you Bing for his interesting Video.
People know it is bad for the health. But they just can not get ride of it. When I was in China, in social events, men still gave each other cigarettes.
The chinese used to stick hemp paper on their windows to protect them from the weather. In the South, they pasted the paper from inside of the house, whereas in the North, they pasted the paper from the outside. This is because of the colder weather in the North. 1) If the paper is pasted from the inside, the wind will blow from the creeks of the window pane into the house. 2) Northern Chinese homes used bed-stoves (heaters) to warm themselves. Oftentime, one heater is placed near the window. This temperature difference will cause the snow on the window ledge to melt faster. If the paper is pasted from the inside, the paper and window pane will damaged more quickly as they are soaked with water.
