RV 12, VANS RV-12 lightsport aircraft pilot report, flight report. Dan Johnson goes aloft with RV 12 pilot Chris Thelan to do a pilot report, on this all metal construction, side by side seating two seat LSA powered by the Rotax 912 ULS 100 HP engine.
The plane was equipped with the Garmin GX3 Touch, and had a number of Garmin Virb cameras mounted on it to help give you a “pilot’s view” of what was involved in flying the craft.
The RV 12 can be built from kit with the average builder taking about 800 hours to complete. To fly it with a lightsport aircraft license the plane must meet the FAA definition of a light sport aircraft which limits aircraft to two seats, less than 1,320 pounds, a top speed of less than 120 knots (138 mph) indicated airspeed and fixed landing gear.
Building kits for homebuilders and assembling fully built aircraft are two very distinct business models. In the early days of Light-Sport Aircraft, European producers enjoyed a head start in fully-built aircraft as their regulations were more accommodating.
American producers were the kings of kits, an effort that calls for good assembly instructions and technical support plus groups that can help each other. These two activities represent night and day differences.
However, in the years since the regulation arrived, American companies have significantly caught up.
Indeed, as September and the 14th anniversary of the SP/LSA rule arrived, Van’s released news of a major change.
“Van’s Aircraft is excited to announce that it is establishing its own aircraft assembly facility and team at its company headquarters in Aurora, Oregon,” the world’s largest kit producer said. “Future RV-12iS and RV-12-iST SLSA aircraft models will be assembled and delivered at this new facility.”

Hey guys, thanks for a flying experience with the RV-12. I always enjoy Dan's videos. Would be nice to have more shots out the front with the panel in plain view to get more of a pilot's perspective.

Thanks for sharing. In the description where it mentions $1/mo for Patreon, I read it as $1/mo for an RV12. Now that would be cheap!

Love that plane. Just hoping maybe next year they will add a BRS option. Seems like buyers have to go with the European LSA to get chutes for some reason.

It's a lot of weight and really not that useful in most cases, fly safe with margin and an emergency landing place in mind.

What was the climb rate? How many HP is the Rotax 912 ULS? What is the take off weight for this aircraft, 1320 lbs.? What is the max speed? Can an LSA trainee get rated in this aircraft? I ask that as some LSA have insufficient payload to fly two men and a lot of Flight examiners are up around 200 lbs. on their own, and that don't leave much for fuel and the pilot. Some would be over gross with two 180 lb. occupants plus fuel.

Imagine all composite, bit sleeker and lighter, no nose clutter and two small turbofan jets at the back. Smooth, quiet and fast yet similar fuel economy.
