I've owned four RVs one of them I built (RV4). This is a great overview! I'm glad this show is embracing a huge part of GA, homebuilt aviation. I'd like to see more.

Greg and the interviewers were wonderful. Greg so knowledgeable and articulate. I was very impressed. And the interviewers were very engaged. They were not "tough" and I thought that was excellent. We all need a bit of space to say our piece. I also thought the education aspect was really nice. Getting the younger generations into AV matters so much. Brilliant.

Mine was an older version RV-12 --- holes were mostly matched, but NOT final sized --- took 1600 hours (& change) to build. First flown in 2019

I have a number of hours in an RV12. Incredibly fun plane to fly. Sort of the Miata of the sky. Makes 172's and such feel like a minivan. I hope to get into an RV6 or RV7 some day.

It will be great to see quick build kits being manufactured here in the good old USA instead of the Philippines and Brazil. 12 yrs and still loving my slow build 10.

I’ve had an RV7A, an RV7 and a now have an RV8. I also have an Aerotrek A220 which is basically a Czech-built Avid Flyer SLSA. If my two planes had a baby, it would be an RV15. GOT to get me one!❤

Love my RV-6A. I had to look at 7 RV’s before I found one I considered airworthy. Really a mixed bag when amateur builders are assembling. A thorough prebuy by a Vans expert is a MUST!

Great informative video and Greg is a great presenter. I built a RANS S-19 Venterra; an RV12 lookalike 😊. What I like about the RV12 is the wings come off relatively easily for transport. What I don’t like about the RV12 is the 20 gallon fuel tank in the baggage area behind the seats.

The photo type EAA Biplane was built by the students at St. Rita High School in Chicago. That was basically what the STEm program is today! It has been around for a very long time. Back in the late 50's there were a lot of schools with Aviation programs. Today there are really very few!

I wonder about mission pilots. A man from my home church was an airline pilot and he felt the call to the mission field. He had to build a plane out of his home so he could learn how to fix the plane he would be using in his mission work. He started building his plane in the late 60s and he and his wife where missionaries for 30 years. But I don't know what kit planes would have been available during the 60s or 70s?

@@TakingOff The 70’s had lots of experimentals. I was a fan of Jim Bede’s designs, though my fav was not a slow-landing missionary-niche design. Same with Ken Rand’s 2-seater, which I briefly owned a partially constructed one of, before my then-future got a big self-administered dent (driving infraction, project was at the other end of the country so I gave it away). I had gone to Oshkosh in iirc ‘78 (met KR there, RIP), and don’t recall a paucity of high-wing slow ‘n low experimentals. I am also curious about the above mentioned plane.

Vans it keeping up with the market. I would love to bring back a original wyoming design as a kit for the backcountry airstrip's of our area the design is well known and would be well accepted in many of those communities but finding people who are willing to provide support for its development is difficult and challenging. I know Van's is a all sheet metal design organization but how would they feel about producing a tube and fabric kit in the future?

I wish there was a different name for Experimental aircraft... As a enthusiast I get it, my wife on the other hand if I ever get her to agree to go up in a plane I'm flying she would bolt as soon as she heard or saw the word Experimental.
@grbockman1310
@grbockman1310 9 месяцев назад
An aircraft whose design has been evaluated, inspected, tested by the FAA, and has received an FAA-issued Type Certificate (TC) may be eligible to receive an FAA Form 8100-2 Standard Airworthiness Certificate if the Type Certificate allows, or some TC'd aircraft must be certified in other categories such as "Restricted" for Ag Aircraft. Any aircraft that has not gone through the FAA Type Certification process is grouped in the Special or Experimental category, such as Special Light Sport Aircraft. Special Light Sport Aircraft are required to meet an ASTM standard which has been accepted by the FAA. Any other aircraft eligible to receive an airworthiness certificate would receive an 8130-7 Special Airworthiness Certificate that identifies the aircraft's purpose, such as Restricted, Air Racing, Experimental Research & Development, Experimental Amateur Built, etc. A name other than "Experimental" may be more confidence-inspiring to some, but the purpose is to identify an aircraft that does not conform to an FAA Type Certificate approving that design. Having said all of this, many of the companies providing kits to a builder have engineered and produced a design or a kit that may very well exceed strength and safety parameters of Type Certified aircraft. They may very well be as good as, or better than, a TC'd aircraft. The difference is that the kit manufacturer has done their own in-house design engineering and testing, but they did not go through the time and expense of FAA Type Certification. This does allow them to provide a cheaper aircraft design or kit. Another consideration is that the aircraft was not completely built, flight tested, and certified under an FAA-issued Production Certificate for the production approval holder's FAA-approved procedures and quality control system.
@justplanefred
@justplanefred 9 месяцев назад
@@grbockman1310yes I get that and it could be explained to someone who would be apprehensive about getting in to an aircraft labeled Experimental. However no explaining in the world will convince them any different even if it looked refined as a Cirrus that it is anymore safe than something that billy Bob put together down by the crick with scrap that was laying around, some duct tape, zip ties, and bubble gum. If you could picture such a contraption. However an Experimental aircraft is probably about all Ill ever be able to afford if that. More likely if I ever scrape the money together to get my license (certificate) I’ll have to rent when I want to go

I hate the fact that people think of Vans started the EAA! Vans kits are like snap together plastic models. You're NOT building an airplane. You are just putting. few parts together!
