I thought you weren't supposed to add bleach into the water heater and to the black tank. Am I wrong?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Год назад
Dan, there really is little danger to sanitize the hot water tank with the diluted bleach solution. Here is a blog post I put together as many people had a similar question: johnmarucci.com/2022/04/06/rv-dewinterization-bleach-solutiuon-in-the-hot-water-heater-tank/
@mnnomad1870
@mnnomad1870 Год назад
@@JohnMarucci I would think that by not sanitizing the whole freshwater system including the water heater that you would recontaminate the system once you unbypass the water heater and start using it. I know some people on city water don't use any bleach at all at any time but still use the pink RV antifreeze and drink bottled water.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Год назад
That's right MN. I caution on the side of safety and sanitize the entire system vs protecting the tank that is at very little risk of corrosion for such a short time of exposure to a very diluted bleach solution. The link above speaks in depth on the subject. Thanks!
@VincentWestberg
@VincentWestberg Год назад
I don’t use my tanks so do I need to worry about bleach
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Год назад
If you are not using your fresh water tank at all, you can possibly pass on sanitizing it, although even if it is empty condensation can accumulate and therefore bacteria can grow. The problem is the plumbing lines sitting off-season. They likely do need to be sanitized before use to be safe.

I wanted to thank you immensely for posting this video. My husband died 4 months ago, unexpectedly, and I was faced with doing this solo. We always worked as a team. Your instructions were clear and transferable to my camper and horse trailer with living quarters. The manuals that come with these things are pretty much a waste of paper. I like being independent and knowing how things work. Now, I can take a much needed trip away, with my dogs. With much gratitude…..😁💕

John, I do have a question. I tried to drain the gallon of water/bleach into the Fresh Water tank input and the opening must have some kind of "anti-backflow" feature, because nothing would flow into the tank. The only way to get water into the Fresh Water tank seems to be a hose with water pressure. Any suggestions. I have a picture of the interface if you need that. Thanks
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 10 месяцев назад
It sounds like the entry to your fresh water tank may have a backflow preventer, as you mention. This would mean you likely will need to pump the solution into the tank. You may want to try a hand pump like this one from Camco (link below). Disclaimer, I have not used this product, so please consider the online reviews carefully before purchasing. Most reviews appear to be for winterizing, but there would be no reason why it couldn't be used to introduce the bleach solution into the freshwater tank. Here is the link to the product from my associate account: amzn.to/3PI3Yhb

Thanks John - I'm a virgin RV owner walking through this process for the very first time. Not to mention that my RV has a very different (Nautilus) water management control panel, so nothing is the same. But this video was tremendous! Do you also have one for winterizing the camper? I'l love to follow your same clear directions for that process at the end of the year. Thanks again!

John, good video. We are taking it out in April for weekend trip. However sometimes we will still get a night below freezing when it is at the storage yard. Do I need to keep redoing the winterizing for one night below 32?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Год назад
Todd, it is not an easy answer. It really depends on how cold it will be for how long. You may be able to risk it if it will stay just at or below freezing for a few hours, but any real length of time for more than a degree or two below freezing can cause damage, especially where water sits at the extremities of the RV. I have left water in my trailer below freezing but only when I've been using it and am running the heat over night. One thing you can do is drain all the water by opening the low point drains and an interior faucet, and pass on adding RV antifreeze. Also, if you have an air compressor, there are videos on RU-vid on blowing out the lines that many people do to remove all water. Hope this helps!

Hi John. Great video with very clear instructions. I am new to this and did my first winterizing last fall. Now, I am thinking of flushing out the antifreeze using the city water attachment before doing the bleach sanitization. The instructions I had for winterizing was to bypass the water heater to prevent antifreeze from entering. So my thinking was to flush out the lines before opening the water heater lines. Does that make sense? Thanks!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 2 года назад
Your call. I unbypass the hot water tank in the first step as there is little risk to the tank of having a small amount of RV antifreeze in the tank for a very short time before flushing.

Thanks for the step by step, we'll be following tonight as we do a last minute de-winterizing before we hit the road tomorrow! I have a probably really dumb question, but where is it easiest/best to do this? At home in the driveway? At a campsite? At a dump station? Does the camper need to be perfectly level? (Our driveway is not level and our flat camper storage spot does not have water access). Do I need to then empty the gray/black tanks before using the camper?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Год назад
I do it on my driveway with the trailer level (my driveway is also on a slant). I try not to do this until right before my first camping trip so I can dump so thereafter.

Thank you so much for this video. Perfect step by step tutorial on dewinterizing after anti freeze winterization. We owned a 20+ year old trailer for 5 or 6 years and we always winterized by blowing the lines with compressed air. We very recently bought a new to us 2020 Coleman and the dealer had it anti freeze winterized. After watching and rewatching multiple times this video, I confidently got this done. Thank you. Would you recommend the anti freeze over air winterization? Is there pros and cons?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci Месяц назад
Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad the video was helpful. I have always used the RV antifreeze method for winterizing and have a step-by-step video on subject if interested. Some people use forced air without issue. I suppose it depends on how cold it gets where the trailer is stored off-season and how confident you are in removing all water from the plumbing lines and water pump.

You unbypass the line so water will flow into the hot water tank, then leave it open for the season. I do drain the tank if I am not going to be using the RV for a while during season. Hope this helps.

Enjoyed the video - newbie here we managed to winterize ourselves for the first time (Jayco jay flight) - most of the steps look the same I saw another comment about electrical on the hot water valve - what did they mean? Could the antifreeze be dumped into a septic tank?
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 2 года назад
I am not certain where the comment mentioned is, so I'll take a guess that what someone was talking about was the switch for the hot water tank at the hot water heater outside. This varies by RV model, so I am not certain as to what your RV has. If you RV has a switch to run the hot water heater on electric (whether the switch is on the inside of the RV or outside by the heater itself), you'll want to ensure this switch is off when dewinterizing. Let me know if this makes sense. As far as dumping your gray water tank that will have minimal antifreeze in it after doing this process, I usually just wait until my first visit to a public dump station after my first camping trip. I do not know how or what RV antifreeze would do to a septic system, but likely you'll want to avoid doing this. There really is only a gallon or so of the antifreeze in the gray tank after doing the process, and if you wait until you camp, it will be greatly diluted before you dump. Thanks!

Excellent video very detailed as is your winterizing video. A few words of caution, only use NSF approved chlorine for sanitizing, even with flushing, household bleach is not a safe alternative made for use in drinking water applications. If you HAVE to use regular bleach, make sure it is unscented. Full 4-log inactivation of viruses only takes about 20 minutes, no need to wait 3-6 hours to flush the lines. Thanks for the video!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 2 года назад
Question about the 4-log inactivation of viruses taking only 20 minutes. At what level of dilution is that measured? The ratio used and recommended by most RV manufactures is the 1/4 cup bleach per 15 gallons of water or 1 part bleach to 960 parts water when sanitizing. Any clarification for users is appreciated. Thanks.

@@JohnMarucci In the absence of a reply from RVSailing, I thought I might chime in with my professional experience in the medical virology and microbiology laboratory setting. When I disinfected surfaces in the laboratory, I used a 1:10 solution of bleach for 20 to 30 minutes. So much more concentrated than what we're using in the RV sanitizing procedure, and I had a different objective in the lab. Personally, I'm sticking with the recommendations from the RV manufacturers. John, thanks so much for your videos. Extremely helpful to me as a newbie RV owner!

Hi John. Thank you so much for posting. I have a question regarding the fresh water flush after the sanitization has been completed. Do you have to empty the water heater tank a second time as well, or just the fresh water tank? Thank you!
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 11 месяцев назад
Dana, there is a basic assumption that if you are dewinterizing then you plan to use your RV fairly quickly thereafter. This is why the process doesn't include draining the water heater a second time. If you dewinterize and will leave the RV sitting for some time before using it, then feel free to drain the water heater a second time. Most people leave the fresh water tank empty while traveling and fill it when they get to their campground, otherwise you are towing much more weight. Thanks!

Newbie here, great educational video. I don't have the luxery of letting solution sitting overnight as I have to go to a rv park to dewinterize. What would you recommend is the minimal amount of time for solution to sit in lines and tank before draining and rinsing? I will be dewinterizing a brand new travel trailer for the first time. I'm sure I'll have to capture all water being drained form fresh and low point into a bucket to avoid and issues with management. Any tips for rv park draining? Thanks again.
@JohnMarucci
@JohnMarucci 3 года назад
Given the trailer is brand new, there should not be any water in the fresh water tank. You can double check this by opening the valve on the fresh water tank and see if anything comes out. Unless you plan on drinking from the fresh water tank (I only use it for rinsing dishes and showers), you potentially could forgo a full sanitation if the trailer is brand new and has never been used. If you would feel better by sanitizing the system before first use, you’ll want to let the bleach solution sit for a minimum of 3 hours in the tanks and lines. Thanks!

Hi John I thought it was going to be that time of year again here in East Central Minnesota but then it started snowing again with rapid meltdown flooding threat. I just had one question on what do you do about the water filter and housing during winterization and dewinterization? I had it done at the dealership last fall and actually redid it when I got it home, but didn't think about the water filter and housing until now. I am determined to do most of the repairs and maintenance I'm capable as it is so frustrating having to make an appointment to drop it off and waiting for parts and then waiting for it to get repaired. Thanks John

MN, I would think you would want to remove any water filter element before winterizing and adding RV antifreeze and not reinstall the water filter element until after sanitizing the lines with the bleach solution in the spring. I don't have a set up like you have, so this is simply what I would probably do if I had a water filter in line. All the best!

Hi John, I have gotten my 2018 R-pod 179 out storage and began the inspections and de-winterization process. One thing I notice is that the fiberglass under the back window down to the bumper flexes in a bit when pressed and feels detached from the inner wall. I removed the license plate holder and saw that the fiberglass has a thin backing of plywood and could see than the inner wall had foam with thin plywood attached on each side. It doesn't seem like the plywood backing has delaminated but has warped and is no longer flush with the inner wall. It doesn't seem like good construction not to glue the plywood backing on the fiberglass and insulation together but I'm also not sure it's a problem? So far it hasn't done this anywhere else on the R-pod. Does the fiberglass on the back of your R-pod flex in a bit? FYI, while I was looking at this issue of the fiberglass from the back of the inside kitchen cabinets I notice a major ground wire connection was not connected and the wire nut was sitting on the floor, nice! Also when I took the stuff out of the corner cabinet in the kitchen I noticed the thin shelf in the cabinet was just hanging and about ready to collapse because it wasn't secured properly, which I fixed and also added cross brace for strength. I was also starting to repack the wheel bearings for the first time myself and the lug nuts were on so tight that I had to use a breaker bar and found the "cheap" lugs nuts have a chrome cap over the top for looks and tore right off on a few of them. With all the problems I've had with my R-pod I am feeling quality is only skin deep is a true statement... Thanks, Mike

@@JohnMarucci Great thanks! I left a message with the warranty department at Forrest River about confirming whether the back fiberglass was supposed to be glued to the interior wall/framing but I haven't yet heard back from them? I think it should have been glued to prevent moisture from warping and bowing of plywood attached to the fiberglass and improve the structural integrity! Not sure how to fix that now without completely removing the outer corner moldings in order to flip it up and put contact cement on the plywood? There is a R-pod construction video at this RU-vid link. Looking at the video at 3:50 you can see the lower insulated panel above the bumper that uses a plywood backed foam insulated panel and at 4:30 you can see the back wall as they were applying the fiberglass but you can't tell if or how it was attached to the inner wall? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QXNYA73rCNE.html
