Changing the oil on your Onan gas generator is fairly simple. With the right tools and products, this is a DIY friendly project that anyone can do in less than 30 minutes. Routine RV generator maintenance is key to keeping the generator running smoothly and it is quite easy to do yourself.
All you need is 1.6 quarts of oil, a 12 mm socket, a T30 Torx bit or screwdriver, a funnel and a container for the used oil. There is a washer/gasket on the drain plug itself, so make sure you don't lose it. You might also want something to place under the generator for spills and some shop rags for cleanup. Don't forget the tape! I love tape. I used masking tape to keep the generator bay door open while changing the oil.

I think you did a great job of showing how to change the oil in your generator. It’s a dirty job but it has to be done. Looks easy. Hope you have a great day and night.

Thanks for the great video. Just got done changing the oil on my generator and it went just like you showed it (except bigger mess and a few cuss words....). Glad I followed your advice on the cardboard!

Do you have jack stands under he frame for safty? Never use your leveling jacks as a lifting source

Thanks for the comment. We aren't lifting the RV with the jacks, we have the wheels chocked and we have blocks under the front wheels.

Wait, Kasie, are you telling me I shouldn’t be using my used motor oil to cook with? :-)

Cody- you should try it and let me know how it turns out. 😋

One comment and one question. I suggest you wear gloves when you do this especially with hot oil and is there a washer or gasket for the drain plug? Be well and stay safe. Best regards. Sam in New Hampshire.

Thanks for the advice, Sam. Gloves are always a good idea. There is a small washer/gasket that is on the drain plug. It typically comes off with the plug, but can get stuck on the main unit as well.

I would suggest picking up a spare washer just in case. Thanks!
