I am a new RV owner and this is the exact generator I have. I did not have a clue how to do this and you have shown me way more than the dealer did about this generator. I didn't even know it has circuit breakers or that you could start it right on the generator! Thank you so much for putting this on youtube. I am off to change my oil now. Oh by the way, my book said change it after the first 50 hours and then every 150 or annually after that. So I blew past the 50 hours by almost 40 but I don't think that will make a big difference I hope! I guess if there are no iron filings I should be good to go. Thanks again for this video!

The auto parts store even disposed of my old oil for free. Next is changing the oil in my V10 engine!

Thanks for the Video. 30 year RVer but have a New 5th (3rd RV) with an Onan 5500. You flagged a good point on the GenSet assemblers putting the oil filter on too tight on initial install. Thanks for the tip on what Oil Filter tool to use. My oil filter "strap" was too big, and getting a bottom "Cap" style likely would have stripped if I attempted to buy/use one. Found the oil filter tool you showed on on the Video on Amazon for approx $8. You need a tool that tightens around the filter as you attempt to unscrew the filter. Going slow the filter started to loosen on the 1st attempt without distorting the oil filter. Thanks again for the tip. I am sure it save me a bit of hassle (and aggravation). Happy Travels....

Hi Carl! The filter isn't that bad after the first time you take it off. My biggest problem with the 4000 we had on the Class C was the start button was too close to where you put the oil in and occasionally my hand would bump it while filling and that made quite the mess. LOL

Extremely informative and helpful video! I do have a question; ' the front cover (on the ONAN) states that the oil capacity is "2 qts. with oil filter". However, it appears that you used almost 2 1/2 quarts if you included the oil poured into the filter.' I'm sorta confused on that issue. Should I purchase 3 quarts for my impending oil change?? Thanks for taking your time to illustrate to us, the steps to do this oil service.

For our first oil change your video was a big help. Wrench tip worth knowing about & I purchased one, Where did you get the rubber tip for the wrench, mind did not have then? Thanks

Good luck with the oil change. If the filter gives you trouble you can wrap rubber around it. I keep an old bike inner tube in my toolbox for such occasions. 😀 The red tips don't last long, we are down to one left. LOL Here is the link for the wrench... amzn.to/2lQ76fk

i live in nebraska and my friend who lives in wisconsin called me because he is having a hard time removing the oil filter from his onan generator,, well i told him that he's in good luck because i am planning on making a trip to wisconsin next week and i told him to hold off with the generator and i will do it for him.

Good luck, they are tough to get off the first time. We wrapped some rubber from a bicycle inner tube around the exposed part of the filter, then put the filter wrench over that. Grabbed the wrench as tight as we could, followed by a couple of choice words and it came off. Be careful near that shielding, it will cut skin easily...ask me how I know! LOL

I live in my older RV full time. Most RV parks will not allow you to do any maintenance (anything involving fluids) so take care of this before you hit the road.

Thanks, we are aware of that situation and are looking at possible solutions. If we have to pay someone to do it we will, unfortunately!

Great video. Do you still need the special tool after the 1st time? I ask because I have oil filter tools that I have bought for my cars and I have noticed that I really only need them once. When I hand tighten when it is time to change I can actually remove the filter with my hand. I have never had an issue with leaks. Of course oil changes in the Car are about twice a year for me. I am thinking of having my dealer ensure it is not too tight so when I am ready to change I may not require a special tool. Thoughts?
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 4 года назад
Thank you! I always tighten it 1/4 turn passed hand tight on everything I change oil on. The grid that is under the 5500 can cut your hand, don't ask me how I know. LOL I use the wrench, to be on the safe side.

I have the 4000Q so no oil filter for me. I switched to the Rotella oil last year from Castrol. I like that drain plug I don't have that. I exercise my generator every 2 to 3 weeks with load for about an hour. Have you ever tried the SeaFoam hot soak to clean the carb? I do that also every spring. Always great videos, Lou.
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 5 лет назад
Hi Lou! We had the 4000 in our Class C and I agree with you, the drain plug is a lot easier. I haven't tried the sea foam, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the tip. 😃

@@GetGonewithUS Oh that's right I forgot you had the Class C before Maggie. I did a video on it following Seafoam recommendations. It is listed on my channel as generator maintenance and exercising. I think it seems to help. These Onan generators are famous for getting the carbs clogged.

Thanks, we'll check it out! We had the Class C for 10 years and never had a problem with the generator or anything really. Maggie on the other hand is 'Special' lol, so we better check it out. 😃

Chuck where did buy that nifty 3 pronged oil filter wrench. I really liked that cause that Onan filter is hard to get at.
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 5 лет назад
I picked it up locally, but it is similar to this one... amzn.to/2OkoDGz (As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases) Onan sells their own, but I heard bad reviews on it. This one works fine after the first time the filter is removed. LOL

Thank you so much for this video, very helpful. Just have one question... it looks like you didn't use the filter wrench when you put the oil filter back on, look like you it's tight enough just by hand (without wrench), is that correct? or did you use the wrench to make sure it's tight enough? It's my first time doing this, so just want to make sure I do it right... thanks again. Pierre.
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS Год назад
You are welcome Pierre! I did not use an oil filter wrench to tighten it. I have been doing oil changes on all sorts of engines for over 40 years and have developed a feel for the tightness. For first time I would recommend you use the wrench though as per instructions. Good Luck! 😀

Hi loved your info on generator, 1 question can we put synthetic oil ?
@GetGonewithUS

Thanks Dom. I have heard people use synthetic oil in their generators without a problem. We personally do not use it ourselves. 😀

Nice job with the video. I would prefer to use the 15w-40. However all I can find in that viscosity is labeled for diesel engines. I actually use the Rotella brand in my diesel truck. Is there a gas engine version or is the diesel version ok to use in the generator?
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 4 года назад
We do use the diesel version and have since 2005 with 2 different RV's. There are people out there who don't agree. It's your call. 😃

I’m going to order the oil filter wrench remover tool that you listed, but what is the ratchet thing , and is there an extension that I need as well , and are they specific sizes? Sorry , I don’t know these things and I don’t have a bunch of tools. Thanks so much for your video!
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS Год назад
You are welcome Tina. We used a 3/8" ratchet with a small extension. That is what the Oil Filter remover tool is mounted to. You should be able to pick it up at Home Depot or Walmart. Good luck!

How did you actually get the 2 quarts in the gen. I know you said it took a while but what was the process. I can only get just over quart in.
@GetGonewithUS
@GetGonewithUS 4 года назад
We give it time to really drain, then put fresh oil in the filter and start filling the generator slowly and then just keep topping it off. It will take time, but the 2 quarts do fit. 😀

Good video. However I found if I fill our 5500 up to the full mark after about an hour (give or take 15-30 minutes) the unit "stammers" and shuts down. I found a video where an engineer type (had the same problem) was looking at the dipstick. Determined that it was designed wrong. He lowered the level the "add" mark and the problem went away. I've since lowered our oil level and the unit has run just as it should.

Thanks Joseph. That is interesting, we never had that problem. I would probably call Onan and ask them about it, just to be on the safe side. 😀
