I didn't think the video could be any more depressing but man, you made it even more sad, i love how honest you are though, it's refreshing to see a youtuber wear his heart on his sleeve and not just put on an act, that's what makes you so likeable.

IMO this was A LOT more emotional than the original... It's simply viewing it at the perspective of an old man who is reflecting on his life... Even the composer of this song admitted that when he listened to JC's version of his song he immediately realized that he lost and accepted that the song is not his anymore... He compared it to losing a girlfriend to someone else....
@williamroeben
@williamroeben 7 лет назад
I agree- he figuratively knocked it out of the ballpark. There was so much loss in JC's life- as there is in ANYONE'S life- and it natural to mourn and grieve.

@NearlySeniorCitizen Yetagamer I had the very same reaction to the video, to see him put his own words and soul into the video and by sharing visuals from his life, the good and the bad, past regrets and feeling alone were powerful, you can have everything but it doesn't matter if you don't have someone. My grandfather was a huge Johnny Cash fan and turned me onto his music when i was a kid, I played this song at his memorial service, everyone was in tears. Johnny was truly phenomenal

My dad was a huge Johnny Cash fan; I was six when he took all of us to see Johnny and June live. I introduced him to this song, and I still remember him replaying the video again and again and crying. We played this at his funeral. One of the songs where the cover far surpasses the original. I cry too when I hear it.

i love this song so much. Normally a straight hip hop guy but i like Cash a lot and this is one of the few songs that can make me tear up. Its no doubt in my top 5 songs of all time. I do have The Downward Spiral and think this version is even better than Reznor's great original version.

Although all due respect to NIN cause Trent wrote it and that's where most of the power comes from is those lyrics BUT I think Johnny made it his own and I think they're both equally as good just for different reasons. Doesn't happen often that a cover even comes close to the original let alone the ability to surpass it. A few off the top of my head is "Hurt" of course another would be "The Man Who Sold the World" covered by Nirvana, original artist- David Bowie and the cover to end all covers "I Will Always Love You" covered by Whitney Houston, original artist-Dolly Parton. I know I'm missing a bunch please add to my list!

Reznor said when he saw the video he knew it was no longer his song. I agree. Also the way Johnny sings this hits you right in the emotions. I think many of us have cried while listening or watching the video. Powerful stuff by the man in black.
@nathanpapp432
@nathanpapp432 6 лет назад
Thats debatable, the original is much more musically complex. Cash dumbs it down a bit by removing some of the dissonance which really makes the song what it is. The instrumentation is also much more sparse in the Cash version. The way Johnny sings it is great though, ill give him that, but musically the NIN version is much better.

Omfg I started watching you about a year ago. Wasn’t consistent but always came back to you. I just found this video as well, watched it and I’m in tears. In absolute tears. I’m 16 but I’ve been through hell and I’m not even an adult. In and out of mental hospitals, abused, neglected for most of my life and hated myself for years because of it. I’m finally at a place where I’m getting help and it feels amazing. But I think I was meant to find your video, this song. This channel. Because you have no idea what you taught me today just by being yourself. Keep doing you my man, stay safe and live life. Much love. 💯✌️

I've been watching quite a few of these "Hurt" reactions and they are so very similar in their effect on the listener. This song forces the listener to think about things they usually are trying NOT to think about because it's driving the deep questions right into the heart of those hearing it. Meaning "Why are we here?" "Where am I going?" "How should I be living?" "What have I been living for and how?" "What is really Important in life?". Then when they are done it's so often silence and difficulty describing what they are thinking or feeling. "Hurt" is an "Anointed" song and Johnny's video especially.

ok this man gets it ........i have seen alot of these reviews on this song ...he actually cries ...so he gets it .....i can not watch this video without crying every time .....its that deep and this man and i can relate to it very much ....the regrets of life and in the end it all means nothing ...and if he could do it all again ...a million miles away ...he would keep himself .. he would find away ....and the way his wife looks at him ..the hurt the saddness she felt ..as she was watching him destroy his self ..she stuck by his side till the end ...

Holy shit. It’s one thing to watch some 30 something reactor listen to the lyrics and watch the scenes. The most that we get is a misty eye and a mild feeling of sadness. It was so tough watching this, seeing someone who is well aware of Cash in his prime and the legacy he left before his life spiraled. For you it’s probably comparable to seeing a reflection of Freddie Mercury if he were in Cash’s shoes. In the latter half of the song, I could also feel the hundred images flashing through your mind, though I’m less than half your age. Thank you, Mr. Nearly

If this song made you cry (which I know it did but don't worry I cried too) you should listen to his (Johnny Cash's) version of You are My Sunshine. That song will hit you right in the feels.

I think that's one of the only ways you could have ended this video. What a video to start my impression of this channel. He made me cry more than the song did.

I love NIN's version, but Johnny's version just takes it to a whole different level. I cry every time I hear it.

Trent lost this song to The Man In Black forever and that's perfectly fitting. Powerful.

I’m a Nine Inch Nails fan and love the original, but I adore the Johnny Cash version even more. It just seems so much longer r e raw and honest, especially given the life that Johnny Cash lived. It’s like Trent Reznor wrote it about him in the first place.

The emotional response from watching your reaction to this one by Johnny Cash is a great one, I certainly appreciate that you posted it without editing your emotions out because they really do make for a better reactions! So thanks & I hope to see a lot more of your reactions in the future....

Oh don't cry. But it is such a good rendition of the song. Having loved Trent for so long I was so sceptic of someone touching his song. Specially this one. And I couldn't imagine Johnny Cash doing it. But he really did a great job on it. I think it hits us also when we get up there in age as we understand just how much the little things mean to us. We could have these big empires but they are nothing but piles of dirt compared to the ones we've lost along the way. I never really understood why there's all these reaction videos but I'm so glad I came across yours. I think it's great. I also find it interesting that you like postcards & keychains. Back in the day when I 1st started going to concerts I started collecting keychains. I literally had them hung around the corners in my bedroom then coming into the light in the center & down the corners. I still have them & they fit a large tub which I have given my daughter. I still collect keychains but rarely do they sell them at concerts anymore. I have another tub full of concert paraphernalia from over the years & t-shirts like crazy. I had a whole room full of magazines dating back clear to 89 but my last move I had to get rid of a lot of them. My daughter ended up having to go thru them for me cause I couldn't handle it. Anyway, I do love to talk & I get a kick how you talk while watching. I used to drive my kids crazy & now I see why. lol. I now have my little dog & she'll listen to me talk all day long. Anyway, I'll catch ya later. K
