I know many of you who come to watch this video are having a particular problem going on with your steps right now. This video won't solve every power step issue, but it will solve 95% of them. When trying to figure out what’s going on with your steps, always start with the common issues first. Methodically check each item to eliminate what it isn't and that will reveal what the problem has to be. This video not only shows you the common things you can do to prevent problems in the first place, but if a problem does come up, you know where and how to staring looking. Throwing money at a problem is never the procedure. Diagnose the problem first. If a part has been proven to be bad, then replace that part. Controllers, motors, gear boxes and other operational parts can and do expire from age, or will not work properly when subjected to a lot of rain, humidity, salt water….like staying near beaches or salty environments ie salted roads in the winter and the most common one……lack of maintenance. So use this video as a syllabus or a workbook of sorts, to help guide you into these different areas to check when you do have a problem with your steps. And of course do these maintenance items once a year to help prevent problems from happening in the first place. Other than the parts sources I listed in the description test, here's some additional info on getting the right replacement parts...... The proper replacement motor and/or gear box sourced from an auto parts store can vary depending on your type and model of steps. Generally speaking many can be replaced with a 2006 Taurus window motor part# 742-240 but sometimes the bolt pattern isn’t correct and in one instance the 9-tooth gear was smaller then the original gear. More places to find motor & gear parts: 1) AM Equipment 402 E. Hazel St Jefferson, OR 97352, (541) 327-1546 the motor is $29 plus $7 shipping. 2) Replacement step motor at AutoZone. It's a Siemens "Window Lift Motor", part# WL43003. 3) Autozone. The brand is "Siemens" The ID tag lists the following numbers: 59720-20 121899 4) A 1986-1995 Ford Taurus left front window lift motor sometimes will match. NAPA part # BK655-1395 $63.99. Also from Auto-Zone Manufactured by Dorman part# 742-206. This has a lifetime Warranty and was $49.99. On disassembly of the motor if you find the plastic plugs severely lopsided due to all the years of strain, new plugs cost $8.00 at Autozone or Amazon. Some folks that have a 25 series Kwikee step motor can replace it with a with a Dorman 742-277 window lift motor for a 1986 Ford Taurus driver side window lift motor. Taurus has a high torque motor which is why the number ends with 277 meaning high torque. AutoZone has rebuild kits for Dorman window lift gear boxes (plastic gears). Always use old motor and gear box to match to the right new one for your steps.

Your video was a lifesaver! Our steps quit working the other day after 5 years of full-time use. I had watched several other RU-vid videos and they weren’t specific enough to be helpful. Yours while preventative centric still have enough detail in the troubleshooting part to get me going. I’m not sure, but think it was the tapping the motor with the mallet, but I also tightened the connections. Bottom line: The steps are working again. And I lubed them off good. TFYHelp!

Thank you very much for this video, I just got problems with my RV step, suddenly stopped working, fortunately the step was retracted; I already fixed today thanks to your video, I went directly to check the ground cable and it was in the air, it came off of the ground screw. I cleaned it and re established the ground and bingo the step is working well, I took advantage to lubricate the step and now is working perfect. Thanks for your useful and educational videos.

My step quit after not locking it down while loading for a trip. Thinking I blew a fuse I crawled under the RV several times trying to figure it out. I finally tapped the motor with a hammer a few times and that fixed the issue. Followed your cleaning and lubricant instructions and it works better than ever! Thanks for the great advice!

Thank you Martin and Joanie! We have a 38' Fleetwood Expedition. My RV steps were stuck in the "out" position. I didn't know it and I was driving through the RV gate to get propane. My gate is only 9 1/2 ft wide. As I was going through the gate, my wife started to yell at me to stop, but it was too late and I made it through the gate. I was lucky that I didn't wipe out the steps because I was only 2" or so away from the post. So with my wife's guidance, I backed the motorhome up into the RV access area so I could figure out how to get the steps back in. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. After watching your video, I got my hammer out started to use it. I hit the motor a few good times. I thought it wouldn't make a difference. Well surprise, surprise, surprise!!! When I closed the door, it started working. I felt like a little kid! I opened and closed the door a few times before it sunk in that it was actually working! Thank you for the awesome video and keep on doing the DIY stuff. We appreciate you!

I just replaced a 1996 motorhome with a new to me 2018 Thor ACE. The steps on the new unit were a concern to me because they give about 1/4" - 1/2" when I put my weight on them. The step on the old unit was rock solid, it did not give at all when weight was put on it. I see that the steps on your unit do exactly the same thing that my unit's steps do. So, now I understand that the give must be due to the more complex multiple step mechanism compared to the single step design of the old unit. Your video has shown me what I need to do to prevent the slop becoming a problem down the road.
@RVstreet
@RVstreet Год назад
Yep, movement in the steps is common but that's why you support them underneath when parked. Otherwise that movement or bouncing up and down every time you step on them can cause premature wear and/or bind or break the gears in the gear box. Just support the steps and you'll be fine.

Great video you guys!! We laughed so hard with that intro!!! Great tips again Martin, the step carpets were a #1 priority for us even tho our steps are the Lippert manual fold type those carpet steps are just an added safety precaution and also keep the dirt from being tracked inside! The added adjustable step I saw that you have is on our list after we experienced during our two week shake down trip. The height difference from the last step to the ground was a knee killer and after I noticed a fellow rv’er who had the same step as yours we’ve been searching for one but they are sold out like many other rv things that this massive rv surg has taken North America by storm! I’ve since built a wooden step but allowed enough space to slip in extra wood to give it a sturdy step! Like always you guys, keep the camera rolling safe journeys ! 👍🇨🇦

You are awesome! I just got my 2017 Georgetown 364ts back from only big Ford Truck dealer that services RVs on the F53 Chasis in Cincinnati. I asked specifically to check front end and do the 30,000 mile checkup. Oil change and lube bearings on wheels. I told them the Jeep I was towing had bad wheel bearing and axle trouble after long trip. Also they have a 20 point inspection etc. I then was watching your channel for first time on TV about Air Filter changing. So I go down to where RV is stored inside open air filter housing and find almost black air filter. I called dealer service manager and he said can't believe his guy missed it. I took a photo and sent to him. Then I checked your video on lubricating front end 9 points. I go back down and sure enough it looks like they were not even touched. I have had it there 3 times before and looks like they have never greased the front end or anything else probably. Thanks to your videos I will be doing my own maintenance or checking who does it to be sure it is done correctly.

I greased my Super C Nexus Wraith with the information you provided. I bought the grease gun you suggested; it worked great. You might think about a video on braking systems used when towing a car. I use a RVi 3. Just got it. I had a RVi 2 for about 5 years. I replaced it 2 times under warranty. Otherwise it worked fine and was easy to install. I have yet to take a trip with the RV3. I bought and used your foam cannon. I have a water softener I got before your video. I was taking it in to be serviced every 2500 gallons. I thought the that the resin needed changing. They were just regenerating with salt. I paid $90.00 for the last service. With your video I will do this myself. I will now do your step service. Thanks for your maintenance tips

@@littleweasel1957ify thx Kellie. I totally understand how some people can get overwhelmed. It seems like a lot when you first start out. You've probably heard me say in some of my videos that I took 18 months to get our rig ready before we went FT. BUT....don't get overwhelmed, make yourself a punch list, put top priority things at the top of the list and then take them one at a time. Complete that item and then check it off the list. Over time you'll see that list shrink and you'll see that you're really starting to make some progress. I'm proud of the fact that you're motivated and determined to tackle these things and Major PM is in full swing. GO Kellie. 🔧 💗

If your steps are stuck make sure your RV is level. Our motor home didn’t look too out of level to me when our steps got stuck closed. My wife insisted we just needed to level the RV as the steps were likely bound up. Once again, she was right.

You know, That's exactly why I said that. Because I knew some would think I do this makeup stuff before each video. Well I don't. What you see is what you get. But it sure was fun doing that. Good info! It's also a good idea to lubricate the connecting rod that is just above the light, near the gear. It transfer all of the torque to the steps.

Hello Martin, I also like to take care of things before they break. We are weekend campers so we keep a small pocket tablet in which we make notes, add things needed and or repaired as they come up so at the end of the trip, rip that page out and we take it in the house so we can start working on the list or prepare or what is needed to be done. As for that step motor, similar to what I have for my awning. I paid dearly for the new motor from the manufacturer. Next time I will head to the auto parts store. Thank you!

Spot on. Having had problems with my steps before, you hit all the items. Never thought about protectant on ground...you know what I will be doing today. What is “chain wax” and where do you buy? Wife wants to know how dirty the step carpet gets going down the road, especially following a rain. How do you clean? I have a feeling that is my next honey do!

Go back to the video and right underneath the video you'll see SHOW MORE, click that, scroll down and you'll see links to all the products I use right there. Using our links to purchase products is a great way to say "thank you" for making these video's because it supports our channel. They don't get dirty at all while underway even in the rain. To clean, we just use a broom from time to time and then when I do a full wash & detail which is twice a year, I power wash them along with everything else. If you’ll go to our main YT Channel page-ru-vid.com-and click PLAYLISTS, then on that page click “RV Motorhome Upgrades, Maintenance and DIY How-To’s” there’s already a wealth of information there. Look for my video in that PLAYLIST titled "Keep your RV looking new & protect it from damaging UV". Thanks Ralph. 👍

Martin, thank you! right now we are stranded with our 2005 Four Winds. Steps wont retract. When I went under saw green wire not attached, ring terminal had rusted thru. I replaced and reset in new location. That did'nt make step work tho. I went ahead a used lube and checked for any debree in linkages. nothing. was trying to find info to manually retract step so could get to place to have worked on, not successful yet.. We do use a step just like yours we are using and bracing under steps. but wish had seen your video sooner. While watching I saw the magnets on door so checked and lo and behold, our magnets are not meeting. the screen door where magnet is attached is warped and not meeting inside part of door frame, now I know what I need to address, not sure if can fix myself, but don't feel as stupid. I will be adding your information to my maintenance schedule. Thank you!!

As far as maintenance logs, I just keep a large running document. I use Adobe InDeign to do this but you could use Microsoft WORD or a basic text doc. 33 pages and growing. I enter the date, where I was at the time, what I did, parts and tools I used and any special notes. I keep this on my laptop. All my hard copies of manuals are kept in black bag but I also have additional PDF's that I have downloaded from the web in assorted folders and kept in alphabetical order. 👍
