ℹ️ About the episode:
For most new RVers, there are many unknowns before taking off for the weekend or fulltime. It's only natural to be concerned about how much it will really cost. This season we've been tracking our fuel and lodging cost in addition to each RV park, State Park and Harvest Hosts we've stayed at plus the nightly rate. The truth is, "RV Life" costs whatever you make it. Just like living in a house, your expenses are based more on your lifestyle. In this video, we share what our top 5 RV expenses are and a tip or two on ways to save in each of those categories. We also share some unexpected costs that we didn't realize until we got on the road. Plus, we share our thoughts on campground reservations with so many new RVers.

Join us next Sunday as we make our way out of Mears State Park to Silver Lake Dunes and Mackinac Island! If you enjoy the travel videos more, so do we! But we also like answering questions along the way and slowing down our travels this year due to such an unpredictable route! Thanks for being part of this amazing community!

You are right @@johnnyhubbars9893, but just like anything else that you are researching, you should always vet multiple sources. It never hurts to get varying views because, as Marc and Tricia said in this very video, "It really depends on what you love and where you want to go and where you want to be." I wish more people would vet multiple sources before assuming what someone may want or need. Thanks Marc and Trish! Keep up the great work.

Getting started... I appreciate YOU with your get going with what you have philosophy, don't wait for the perfect rig. I started with a mini-van pulling a small RV nearly 4 years ago, now I have a full size pickup and a 30 foot bunkhouse. The only thing I regret is not getting going sooner. You spend ~85% of the time with your kids by the time they graduate high school, people, no better way to spend quality time with your family, "REAL", QUALITY TIME, than hiking, biking, boating and traveling in an RV. Get your families closer and be happy. :)

This video has been so informative for my husband and I. Our big problem with retiring before 65 is insurance because we are both self employed and are paying $1200 a month for health insurance with $5000 pp deductibles. Crazy I know. You both have helped with different options we can investigate. Thank you

Great info thanks. It's also good to watch/listen to how you interact during this kind of video. I'd like to add to the conversation that if you're unsure about an RV lifestyle, or, like me, you love your home, live in a small country or have animals that can't travel, there's nothing wrong with renting a campervan/RV/travel trailer for an extended holiday. Off season is best for cost, longer rentals for negotiating discounts, but be careful to choose your rental company and vehicle with care. Cheapest often isn't the best unless you want road restrictions and a vehicle that isn't being well cared for and checked between rentals.

I spent the past 12 days driving from Ohio to Colorado to take my youngest daughter to college. We decided to go to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone as part of this trip. I am now calculating what I spent to stay in AirBNB's for 11 nights, fuel, and food. It was an amazing trip, but I could have put a sizable down payment on a small rig! Great cost breakdown video. I have no idea where to start when it comes to brands. So many choices! Paralysis by analysis. Great channel!

Enjoyed this video! I wanted to mention that I recently viewed your video on weight capacities of a vehicle. You did an excellent job explaining those details. We started out with a vehicle that was at its max pulling our 25’ ultra light. I was constantly fretting about the weight in the vehicle and the tongue weight. All the the RV dealership (I wouldn’t buy a new RV again) looked at was the tow capacity of the vehicle. I guess selling an RV was more important than the safety of their customers. At any rate, I finally sold our Expedition and bought a diesel 3/4 ton PU. What a difference! I can even travel with a full fresh water tank without having safety anxiety. Thanks again for sharing your experience! Hope to see you n the road sometime.

I haven't gotten my notifications in a long time. Glad I clicked. I know you won't see this but the Start thing. We started in a Tent with 3 preschoolers. First real vacation first night got drowned in a Storm, kids scared, we were too and LeAn and Me were Music Majors so in the Rain we just start singing "Row Your Boat". And it was loud the kids join in 6, 5, and 4 Y.O.s we got wet but we all laughed and laughed. It set the tone, we were making memories. which turned into 3 popups and now our 2 Hardside 24FT Grandma and Grandpa special North Trail. Our mid thirties Kids now all still tell us that very first trip was the best vacation we ever took. We're only 58 so a long way to go and many more memories to make.

Your advice given for starting with what you have at the time is so relevant. We will not always have our kids with us, and for the most part, we all should make the most of the time we have, as we may lose some of our family members prematurely, and miss those precious moments. Some of the best times spent with our kids didn't tie back to the amount of money spent. Some of our best times were just a long walk on the beach with our loved ones. I applaud you for investing in the time with your family.

Lol, I feel like this is the season for Trish’s, “okaayyy,” with slight eye roll season for Marc’s wants-air horn, 2020 Bronco 🤣 I hope you make it Trish and find some peace! Love your videos as always!!

I love this particular video. Loads of good information and you presented ways to look at expenses and planning that I hadn’t considered. Would love to hear more about the rig insurance/finance considerations you eluded to. Be well! Love to watch KYD.

Loved the pic of the old bronco, we grew up in my dad's broncos towing a small camper and going to FL and Canada in it. Great memories, I've been wanting to get an old one to relive some of the best memories of my childhood and saw the new one and one of those now too :)

Hey Marc & Trish! Love your “start where you are” message! I’m currently DIY-ing some repairs on a little Prius I just got 2 months ago for road trips and planning on packing a tent and traveling with my boyfriend and kids (13 and 7) soon. Love your videos!

Oh my gosh, we love watching you two and we just dove in and bought our first travel trailer. Kids are grown and mostly gone, so it’s all about us now and we love watching and getting ideas and tips from you guys. Next time you are in Oregon - maybe we will happen to camp at the same place 😁 Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙏🏻

We've had Medishare for 13 years now. Thankfully we have not had any major medical issues. Our first camper was a 10 ft Casita. Haha! And we loved having it.

27:48 "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are", Theodore Roosevelt Also! (24:46) You don't even need a tent to get camping! Many many parks have cabins you can rent out. Do be aware that cabins often require reservations *FAR* in advance.

Lots of laughs, thanks Charlie and Caleb! I love the look of that market. Craft and farmers markets are what I missed during lockdown last year. I'm taking my pre-Covid KYD cap tramping (hiking) in the Marlborough Sounds (NZ) next week so it gets a change of scenery. Back in a campervan in late autumn to catch some South Island colours. Happy travels and loads of fun KYD people.

Hi i'm Rocky and I have to say that I really enjoy watching your program. It is very informative and I appreciate it especially for someone like me a former Greyhound and Coach America motor coach driver starting my new career as a full time RV person and starting from the ground up. I never thought that I would take up driving again due to Covid-19. However, i'm really looking forward to it after watching you folks on You Tube. Best to you, Thanks.

Great video idea. We’ve thought about making the same video too on our channel. We are full timers, but we travel the country, to the destination my employer sends us to. Some places we pay $525/mo (right now) for a campground in Wisconsin, all the way up to $1500-1700/month in CA. Luckily most of our fuel is paid by my employer. When we started our initial unexpected cost was propane. We knew we’d be spending money on propane, but not as much as when we started out, mainly because we were someplace it was snowing when we started out as full timers. We have since bought electric heaters.

My mission for my RVing is to keep out of the cold and snow and especially humid cold. Michigan from May - October. Nevada from October - May. 10 to 14 days of travel from one RV park to another.✨I prefer to travel fast across the country on trains, not planes, unless I need to get there overnight. Bring your own food and drinks to save even more money.✨
