As a retired truck driver, I can’t express how much you need to do a pre-trip inspection. You might’ve noticed differences if before every time you traveled you actually looked at the suspension not busting you all I can say is I drove a tractor trailer for 25 years, keep your videos coming I am subscribed

Flatbedder here and to add to what the previous person said making a habit of walking around will help you notice when things start to look different and may be the difference between a $100 fix and a $1000 fix. We know these trailers aren't exactly heavy duty but it's just a good step to add to keep ahead of things. Safe travels.

I have a 2018 Solitude 310GK, several weeks ago I installed my 3rd set of leaf springs since the trailer was new. My first set had poorly constructed spring eyes and the bronze bushings were deformed when the trailer was almost new. I caught the issue while fixing greasy brakes when I got the trailer home from the dealership 400 miles away. I am a professional mechanic (semi-retired) so I just fixed it on my dime. After 5 years my leaf springs were looking like they had lost their arch and were flat. My springs were 6 leaf 3500 lb capacity. I replaced the springs with 7 leaf 4000 lb capacity springs to try and make them last longer. The 7 leaf springs have a longer second leaf that fully supports the main leaf (the one that broke on your trailer) 3500 lb springs are relatively inexpensive but the 4000 lb springs are about 3 times as much. I noticed that your new springs have nylon bushings in the spring eyes. The nylon bushings don't typically last very long in heavy trailers. Your factory springs should have come with bronze bushings in the spring eyes and they need to be greased often to last. They are pretty easy to add to your new existing springs. You should also inspect your springs eyes on the other side of the trailer. You might be surprised at how much wear the bushings will have.

Morryd sells a heavy duty shackle kit with wet bolts, this gives you double thickness shackles and a bolt with a zerk fitting so you can easily regrease the bolt without any disassembly.
@davecamilleri9411
@davecamilleri9411 3 месяца назад
I installed the heavy duty Morryde shackles on my Solitude when it was brand new. It already had wet bolts at the equalizer, but had solid bolts with bronze bushings on the fixed ends of the springs. I replaced those with wet bolts also since the bronze bushings need grease. I also had the Morryde shackle kit on my last 5th wheel and they are great quality.@@andrewfidel2220

What do you do to grease the brass
@carlhokanson9160
@carlhokanson9160 3 месяца назад
I have never seen car or pickup truck springs break, So why not get springs for a car or truck, even used ones from a pick and pull yard. Even if you couldn't find ones that fit right in, you could modify the mounts/ brackets to let you fit most any type of spring in. I've never had to grease auto or pickup truck springs. grease. So they seem up to the job.
@davecamilleri9411
@davecamilleri9411 3 месяца назад
You need to have wet bolts installed. A wet bolt is a bolt with a hole drilled through the center and another hole about halfway down the bolt and a Zerk fitting to allow grease to be applied. A lot of upper end 5th wheel trailers are installing these from the factory. These fittings need to be greased every 500-1000 miles to make the bushings last.@@johnaz1018

Very smart move replacing both leaf springs, always replace in pairs. The next move is to replace the other side springs! You always want to match spring ratings on both sides. Matching the springs is critical to how your RV tows behind your truck. Here’s a big question for you guys, do you weigh your RV to ensure that you aren’t overloading your rig? Too much weight can play havoc with your rig’s suspension. Be safe in your travels and take care ❤

You should do all four leaf springs. Leaf spring metal fatigue is very real, they are constantly flexing. As many miles you have on they trailer I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. Alaska I'm sure really did a job on them. I'm a retired mechanic, I would most definitely do all of them. They have all gone to the same places. You guys were lucky the front of the leaf didn't brake, it would have done more damage. Be safe please have all replaced.

Kudos to the repair techs for getting your issue resolved in pouring rain. You guys did a great job explaining what the issue was and repair process. I've been a mechanic all my life (nearing retirement). I wish I could haul all my tools and jacks with us everywhere we go but that's not feasible. Not to mention my body isn't able to do what it used to be able to. Best you can do is have an emergency plan and an empty credit card and cash for such times.

I am not a mechanic but have replaced/upgraded leaf springs on a few trailers and cars. I am a DIY'er all day. While yes this is a feasible DIY roadside repair do not underestimate how easy it looks when someone with proper tools and experience are doing the work. Remember, there is some danger whenever one is prying on rusted bolts with their body under a trailer that is only supported by a jack that relies on a narrow base and/or fluid and "O" rings to keep you safe. Make sure to use all four trailer supports in addition to a jack on the suspension parts. "Unattached" jack stands and hydraulic jacks do fail from time to time and the consequences can be fatal. About 5-10K people a year are seriously injured when performing work on a car that is supported by a jack. Trailer carries the same risk. Also, an old rusted bolt on the suspension of anything can be difficult to remove without the proper tools. One could spend hours of frustration trying to remove one stubborn bolt that seriously takes seconds to remove with a proper tool (ie impact gun, breaker bar, etc). If you plan on carrying an extra leaf spring to install on the road you need to equip yourself with proper tools to make the repair quick, successful, and safe. If you have the skills great and good on you. If not, call the mobile techs and enjoy a glass of wine in a chair while they fix the trailer properly.

We have an RV Park we frequent. Last year we had an electrical issue and contacted the park office to see who or if they could recommend a mobile repair person. They were more than happy to give us the name of a guy. We called and he was there within an hour, and did a great job. Last week we were at the same park and called him to do a couple of things. He replaced our slide topper and installed a new toilet. He is professional, speedy and reasonable. We will continue to use his services.

We had an incident with our toad on I-10 in the middle of Tucson, AZ during rush hour(s?)... a LONG way from home. Our tow bar mount failed on our Jeep and when we got stopped all that was left was ONE safety cable! We found a repair shop who was an advertiser in the RV Park brochure we received about 15 minutes later at check-in and verified with the office that they were good people. They were LIFESAVERS! They had the parts overnighted, worked us in and sent us on our way. RV travel is stressful, but that's just life. Your RV doesn't have it in for you... Try to stay positive and keep a good attitude. OH! and do a pre-flight check EVERY time you move. Thanks Hanks! Yet another useful video.

Great video guys. Big thing to remember when considering weight capacity it is not just the springs. Other things that have to be considered is axle capacity, tire and speed and weight capacity, but most importantly you have remember your frame is only meant to handle a certain amount of weight. As you get closer to that rating the torque put on the metal and the welds increases and with a hard enough jolt and surpass those ratings. Keep the great videos coming.

Broke a leaf spring on our 5th wheel while down south in Baja Mexico. Hard to find new springs the right length down there. Would recommend taking a spare set if you go south of the boarder.

We are full-time and have been down the same road with our suspension system. During a rough patch of road our suspension equalizer articulated up to the frame and broke the hanger and bent the frame. To try and NOT have that happen again, we installed a Lippert Center Point Suspension System (replaces the equalizer with air bags) and Sumo springs. We also had the welder (per Lippert Techs....I know...) add 3/16 2x2 crossmembers between each hanger to add lateral support to the frame and hangers. That was 2 years and 10k miles ago. All has been well since. You might also consider new wet bolts with brass inserts and your hangers should have 2 pieces of steel welded inside the hanger to add support. Let me know if you need pics :)

I had to replace my Dexter axle (for the second time) after my big midwest trip last year, along with a set of tires. No leaf springs on mine. At some point during the trip, the axle failed, and I only caught it by looking at the tires. The funny part was when I contacted Dexter about it, since they have a lifetime warranty. They claimed that it wasn't covered--and then sent me a new axle for free, anyway.

Just an FYI. Almost any utility trailer dealer/repair shop will do your springs for you. They will most likely have the springs on hand and will be cheaper then a mobile tech. Also, I agree you should do a walk-around every time you stop. After getting fuel, eating lunch, stopping for a stretch, etc. I happy for your washer purchase. We have had ours for a couple years and love it. You will get some error codes from time to time but don't worry it is usually nothing. The manual will tell you how to clear them. Keep up the great videos. You Hanks know how to entertain.

Good job at changing both leaf springs on the axle. I tend to change all leaf springs, equalizers, shackles, bolts, and u-bolts for peace of mind, because when one component fails, I’ve found that others are soon to follow. Also, when replacing leaf springs; you need the eye to eye measurement, the front eye to center pin measurement, the width of the leaf pack, the number of leaves, and the weight rating of the leaf pack. I have a rig (Ambulance) that was converted from air ride suspension to a leaf suspension. The shop that completed the conversion did not get the front eye to center pin measurement, which moved the axle forward about an inch to an inch and a half. This caused the driveline to bind which led to a lot of expensive reared and transmission repairs… A simple measurement cause thousands of dollars of damage to the previous owner. We all learn as we go. I’m sure that you’ll add this to a pre/post trip walk around inspection 😉 Thank you for Awesome videos and keep up the good work 😊

Really enjoy your videos! We are fellow Pennsylvanians, with a home base in the Pocono Mountains. My wife and I have been travailing all over North America in travel trailers for the past years. This was a very informative video. Yes your leaf springs are what supports all the weight in your RV, and they can be overloaded. Especially if your heavier on one side of the RV vs the other. We are not full-timers, but I am always concerned about what my real world weight is on each wheel and on my hitch. Leaf springs do tend to fail over time just from the constant stress.

Thanks for posting this video. I liked and subscribe to your channel. One small criticism is the discussion about the washer and dryer would fit better in a different video, it was a distraction here. Keep up the good work.

After getting a couple miles on those new spring you should check the tork . Springs and moving parts have a tendency to come loose as they where in.

Fifty years ago when I was a kid the leaf spring on my family's pop up camper broke while on a trip. Of course it happened on a weekend, and the temporary fix was welding things back together until we could get back home and get a replacement spring. My dad was a mechanic and this drove him batty!

I went through this last year on a trip. Broke two leaf springs. Had to change them out in a parking lot. Luckily a local shop had all the parts in stock. Took me about 2 1/2 hours.

I just saw your broken spring vid . I have been a trucker for 40 years and have broken a few springs. Usually they break bouncing UPWARD, more than downward as they are not mentally to bend upward

This is not the first video I have seen with broken leaf springs, I am definitely going to get a set to keep on hand. I usually carry a jack and some tools. As for the coffee I gave up cream and sugar years ago when I was boarder line diabetic, I changed my diet started exercising and and taking daily vitamin, and fish oil supplements. every time i go get checked i am back in the normal range for sugars and triglycerides. Most of my sugar was from the 6 cups of coffee a day and a lot of pasta. I hope you get to go down to San Diego I loved it there.

I had to watch the video a second time to see if what was said in another comment was right and it blew me away that they were right that they only changed the right side only and I’m wondering why when you lose a spring and have to go with a upgrade they should have loaded the axle the same on both sides so you don’t have a towing issue or a weight distribution issue that can cause a pulling issue like it’s out of alignment, if I was in California and with their crappie roads I would probably look to have the other 2 done because the old saying is everything always come in pairs so now that you have seen it somehow you can save money and as you said with a few tools you can do it you self, love you guys and the effort you do to keep us informed. Thanks hanks

That's why I carry at 1 leaf spring for when SHTF incidents like this on the road + I carry a bottle jack and wood for cribbing (support). I also installed Sumo Springs (kinda leaf spring helpers made out of some type of rubber), easy DIY install. So far I haven't heard of anyone breaking a leaf spring that runs Sumo Springs. Extra insurance in my opinion.

I installed the Sumo Sp[rings on our Keystone Cougar two years ago and have been extremely happy with them too. I also installed the MORryde Crossmembers and Heavy Duty Wet Bolt/Shackle Kit. I'm one of those guys who tries to mitigate issues before they happen.
