NEW VOLCANO IN MERADALIR. Reykjavík Grapevine editor in chief, Valur Grettisson, is on the scene with a full update of how the eruption is progressing. Read on for more information and links!
A new eruption started today (3rd of August, 2022) on the Reykjanes Peninsula, near the location of last year’s volcano. The fissure is about 300 metres long and is estimated to be between 5 - 10 times more powerful than the previous volcano in Geldingadalur. It is located in a valley called Meradalir and is a bit further away from roads and settlements than last year. Read more updates on our website here: grapevine.is/tag/eruption/
Follow our Twitter account for up-to-date information on the 2022 eruption: / rvkgrapevine

Thank you for the unexpected volcanocast! Once again you are able to get crazy close to an erupting volcano. Some of the best footage I’ve ever seen of the early stages of a fissure eruption when there are lots of small vents erupting simultaneously. And you were planning a week off to get the magazine out. Thanks for putting in the extra hours.

I found your channel last year when the first eruption since hundreds of years in the Reykjanes Peninsula occurred. I'm not old enough to having watched your footage of these very old eruptions 😁 (joking), but I loved your absolutely brilliant videos about the eruption of 2021. I'm not that much interested in Icelandic politics and news but sometimes I watch your and your team's videos about those topics too, and they are very nice too. And now this new eruption. I think the way you walking around with or without Polly, the morale officer, is an absolutely wonderful way to present news. It's not as perfect as if it's made in a studio, but exactly that's why I like your videos. And, a honorable mention of course goes to your camera guy or team. Absolutely great video quality. Even when it might only show a guy talking while walking with his dog. But the volcano footage is the sugar cone on the cake.❤ I briefly thought about visiting Iceland and this volcano, but perhaps I'm too old for hiking to that remote location. Your videos however make me feel like I am there in person. Have a nice day, and good luck always. 🖐👴

This is so exciting! Remember last year when I was wondering how in the world Mt. Aso and Fujiyama in Japan, and the volcanos of the Cascades in the northwestern United States got so tall because huge chunks were frequently collapsing from Bob and Bobsdottir? Perhaps this long fissure opening is the answer. Maybe the longer fissure opening provides the base for a higher and larger volcano cone? What if this actually is just a continuation of the original Carrie Fissure from last year, just running under the carpet like an extension cord, so to speak? How wonderful! P.S. That's Mt. Ranier in Washington State behind me in my thumbnail photo from my first trip out west in 2018. Valur, give my love to Polly, won't you? A scratch behind the ears and a back ruffle, plus throw the frisbee! Thank you!
