Man 1: We want to make agriculture a serious and important profession that benefits those who choose it as one. And I know it is possible so what I ask of you is to have a business mindset while dealing with agriculture. Know how to take good care of plots of land and crops planted in it.
Man2: I had a privilege to visit GMO farmers, compared to us they harvest as five times as our harvest. Let me give you an example, the most harvest a corn farmer can get on a hectare is 2/3 tons while the GMO farmer in South Africa today is getting the harvest of 8-12 tons on the same land depending on the type and fertility of the soil and the way he/she does their farming. As you understand it is possible to increase the harvest and most importantly it is possible to increase the price of the harvest. So the GMO farmers get more profit than the farmers who don’t because they invest less.
As you have seen technology was introduced in different aspects of life like economy or transport, so here we want to introduce it in agriculture and see if it can be as benefiting. Today we are going to talk in brief about the law that has been voted by the cabinet members and has been sent to the prime minister’s office, we are waiting to see if it will be approved or not. Then it will be allowed to use it. And the research we were telling you about cassava plant is a success. The researchers told us that they tested it and ate it, they were fine which means they are safe to eat. Let us follow a short discussion we are going to have with a science expert as he tells us about the progress of the law about introducing technology in business.
We are having 5 day training that are given to journalists and other media presenters like social media influencers. The goal of the training is to give basic knowledge to the journalist or media presenter who wants to do science reporting. Science reporting is about the stories about agriculture like the new fertilizers or any other topic. We want to enforce fact checking before the story or any video gets out because we want to give the truth and facts to the people. We do this in helping them to get the sources about the story and the credibility of the story so that it has balance without being biased about one side or another.
Rwanda is on a good level in preparing opportunities for Rwandans to have the technology of GMO and many more products that alter the crops’dna in order to boost the harvest, increase their adaptability to diseases and increasing their ability to contain higher nutrients like vitamins or other vital nutrients for the body. Rwanda has done research through RAB they are doing research about the cassava plant that does not get the disease called ‘kabore’. And the members of the cabinet have approved the law about introducing technology in agriculture. The law was also approved by the office of the prime minister all we are waiting for is for it to be published in the statement on cabinet resolutions. After it gets published, farmers can expect that the plants that were altered to adapt to the climate change will be introduced to them. They are made by scientists in order to reduce food prices therefore food insecurity in the country and in the whole world in general.
Man 3: We started the research with cassava plant but there is also research on other different plants in other countries. So we started with the ones they did not research for yet, and recently we are finding the permission to start another research on Irish potato plant. In Kenya they are working on maize, irish potatoes and bananas. And we also want to work on multiple plants after we get the permission from REMA, the state run authority in charge of environment. And in research you cannot do everything on your own, we are a team and we are able at our job so the only thing we are waiting for is the green light from the law getting approved. As you know the law regarding biosafety was voted for by cabinet members and was sent to the prime minister’s office for approval. After it gets published the implementation will start starting from establishing the guidelines to give the starting line of how things will be done. By that time the research will be done properly and freely to anyone who would like to do the research concerning the seed problem in the country.
Man 4: Most people don’t understand what GMO is, it is a program of modifying organs. It is now a popular program and a lot of countries have adapted it. We have not joined yet but we are preparing ourselves to because it is a good program that helps eliminate food insecurity in the world by using seed that adapt to climate change and can produce large harvest in a short period of time.
