It's also dead last for me. The beginning with Jeff screaming essentially is just annoying and to me it just looks lazy overall. Doesn't help that after I see the volume, I just get pissed
Why do they keep teasing Weiss fighting Emerald, they almost never interact and considering current situations, probably not going to happen. Besides emerald would probably win since Weiss can't remember how to fence
Quick correction, as it very mildly annoyed me, is the fact that volume 7's opening didn't spoil Penny 2.0, as she was revealed in the first episode when the opening is at the end. Good tier-list otherwise.
Yeah, I'm fairly certain that the openings always play last in the first episode of any volume, then play first thing in subsequent episodes. So things like Qrow, Winter, and especially Penny never get spoiled... unless people watch the opening first weeks after the episode.
@@bloxrocks5179 JoJo fan? And I agree. There are spoilers in JoJo openings but when it goes to these spoilers in specific episodes, it makes sense and it's fun to look at.
@@Bach1s. was about to say that. It had the same feeling as Sono Chi No Sadame and Fighting Gold, just showed the entire plot and we couldn't see a thing without context.
I say the Penny “spoiler” in Trust Love doesn’t count because you’re not supposed to see that opening until after the first episode is done. Other than that, I think this is a good list. That When it Falls placing hurt though. 😭
The ending shot of Volume 7’s opening was screaming “take a screenshot, use this as your screen saver”. Crescent Rose is so large it barely fits in the frame, but that’s a small nitpick. The only reason I can think of for why Qrow is so far away is to symbolize his Semblance or something
Fun fact: Ruby has only fought Cinder once in the whole series, during the dance in vol 2 when Cinder was in disguise. Since then it's just been them one-shotting each other. Even Jaune has fought Cinder more times than Ruby! :/
Let’s see. Ruby v Cinder: very first episode V1, fight during the dance V2, briefly V3 finale, Haven fight V5, briefly V7 finale, and V8’s finale. 6 times. Jaune v Cinder: Briefly V3 (after Amber is killed), Haven fight V5 and V8 finale. 3 times. Ruby has fought Cinder more times than Jaune. (And if you don’t include the brief fights, Ruby still wins 4-2).
@@Killerofthenight80okay to politely respond One shooting cinder with silver eyes does not count as a fight so 2 of those fights don’t even count (end of volume 3 and 7) also she never fought cinder in haven or episode 1 unless being in the same room count (or you count cinder throwing one fireball as a fight) again don’t want to be rude (also correct me if I’m wrong but in most of Ruby’s fights with cinder I don’t even think they even talk to each other while with at least juanes haven fight there was a lot more talking with each other so it’s not just the number of fights it’s the interactions in the fights that at least show a bias towards juane)
@@patrickheneghan877 ok, I can see the reasoning behind the V5 Haven fight not being included, but if I may add, there doesn’t have to be dialogue between said combatants to be fighting, so the first episode and V8 finale fight with Ruby and Cinder do count, which would would bring her count to 3 (as long as counting the dance fight as well). Jaune’s fights with Cinder still are the Haven fight and V8 finale (I wouldn’t count the brief altercation of them after Cinder kills Amber, but that’s why I had the count with the brief altercations and a count of only actual fights) which leaves him at 2 fights with her, still making Ruby have more fights than Jaune against Cinder.
@@Killerofthenight80 okay I can accept the volume 8 fight and volume 2 fight and I might be misremembering but I’m pretty sure episode 1 was more glynda fighting cinder than ruby which would make her and juane equal
@@patrickheneghan877 well if running it as the same basis as Jaune’s brief altercation with Cinder after Amber is killed, then yes. They would be tied then.
I agree with you about Weiss never fighting Emerald, but Ruby and Cinder do actually fight in volume 2. The episode was “Dance Dance Infiltration,” where Ruby sees Cinder (in disguise), breaking into the CTT tower in Vale.
I like “hearing you blabber” about it all. I’m still gonna comment. All good vibes all-around. I think my favorite is the second one. My favorite part of it is “to the things we love!” It’s a spoiler way ahead of time, granted. Still, I like the foreshadowing nonetheless and the way the Maiden powers flare in Cinder’s eyes.
I don’t really have a favorite or least favorite RWBY intro. They never have stuck out to me. Real talk, though, the monkeys banging on pots and pans in that clip of Tarzan fucking slaps. Favorite opening of a show is Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Part 4.
Yo, when I was getting the video from that monkey song I just ended up jamming out to the whole thing! Also GOOD answer! (though, FMA Brotherhood part 2 is my personal favorite!)
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 it’s such a fun clip. Part 2 is pretty good, that is my number 2. Part 5 is my least favorite, song is just two slow for my liking.
Something that I’ve always thought was really cool was that the music from RWBY was what actually got me into the show. I was in middle school, listening to Apple Radio (remember when that was a thing? XD) and This Will Be The Day l popped up, and it started my obsession with the show.
Let’s Just Live is my current favorite opening specifically cause of its lyrical content. It was a song that not only was just a strong edition to the show but it actually picked me up and kept me going through a very hard time. It’s right up there with Time to Say Goodbye for me as a song ❤️
I disagree with lots of the placements, I would personally place the later openings waaay higher, but it's still a great review. I like the way you were thorough on your analysis without throwing out technical mumbo jumbo that literally no one understands what it means, like a lot of music reviewers do. And it was pretty funny at times too! great vid, now I'm off to listen to Rising on repeat untill it's time for work lol
I like when It falls, but..it seems that a war is about to begin, that this volume is full of battles and losses, and blood and tragedy. Actually.....a school is petrified and Phyrra dies. the End.
My one gripe with V8's opening is Yang's little memory shot. Everyone else is posed like they're fighting, meanwhile Yang looks like she's about to go tell her crush she likes them. Her facial expression is obscured by her bangs, and while she's probably supposed to be gearing up with Ember Celica, she just comes off way too chill. The memory appearing in her massive mane of hair also just looks a little goofy to me.
Fun fact, the fall of beacon is eluded to in thile season 2 opening. The school is on fire when the girls are standing dramatically with the partial effects
V6 is my favourite opening, closely followed by V4. My least favourite is V3 because the song sounds like an angry customer in a retail store you work in, yelling at you about an incorrectly labelled item and demanding to speak to your supervisor.
I love V3's opening theme so much and after I finished this vid it was the only song stuck in my head. In this one instance I'll own up to my shit taste.
Man, that volume 2 ending definitely would work perfectly with the Volume 1 end signature pose of Ruby. Maybe if they did that it would really stick and do every volume... would be cool. While I don't agree too much ranking (just the music) I agree with the ranking itself, some visuals are weird or don't fit the songs. Also what the fuck is Ironwood's face at 21:58 ? Like seriously what the fuck is that model what I never noticed that what
When i watched rwby for the first time, i remember going in at volume 3 thinking "aww, i won't get to start each episode with that catchy song anymore :(( (vol 2's opening) then when i reached the part in the volume where they used Time To Say Goodbye as the background music for their Grimm Eclipse ads, it always fills me with so much joy, then when the ad is over and it cuts back to my least favorite opening When It Falls i always feel so genuinely upset, like a parent taking away their kid's toy xD
*My favorite RWBY OP from the most liked to the least. MUSIC Version.* *1)* Rising. *2)* Trust Love. *3)* Time to Say Goodbye. *4)* From Every Life. V8. *5)* This Will Be the Day. *6)* When It Falls. *7)* Let's just live. *8)* Thriump. *My favorite RWBY OP from the most liked to the least. Animation and visual.* *Most liked:* Vol. 8 / Vol. 1 / Vol. 6 / Vol. 7 *Least liked:* Vol. 3 / Vol. 4 / Vol. 5
Woo! Adam is going to kill Blake! Dance time! ...Volume 4 certainly made me root for that happening, so, maybe someone editing the opening quietly inserted subliminal messaging?
The Penny "spoiler" isn't a spoiler because the first episode the intro is always at the end (probably to avoid the main spoilers of a new volume introduced by the first episode) and they meet her in the first episode, don't they?
Yes but some people like to watch the opening before they watch the episode. Especially if the opening is posted to RU-vid before the episode becomes available for non-first members to watch.
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 Yeah but that's not true Volume 7 premiered for first members on the 2nd (the opening was on the 11th) RWBY episodes release for the public a week after for the public. That would be the 9th. Now if my maths and your maths are the same that sound be before the 11th.
At first I didn't really like "when it falls" too, but after listening to it more I actually liked it a lot. Though I can completely see why most people don't
I can’t believe you didn’t mention the “Happy Ever After”/“Happy Never Again” flashes at the end of For all Lives, that was the most intriguing and eye catching part for me when I was watching the volume
It felt a little tryhard for me. The lyrics and such have always been 'we're going to lose, things will be bad forever, you're supposed to be sad' at times, but that bit just felt a bit juvenile in execution.
Man, i can really agree with you on all of this. Your are not only valid, meaning i can't judge or blame you for your choices, but also really giving the ones that have their mistakes some love and space forgiving them!
V3: The worst song and very boring visuals. Some shots are good and I appreciate the way to show how dark the volume was. V4: the worst visuals and don't care about the song. The only good shots were Yang and the villains but other than that it's not that good. V5: The most boring one and a song don't care about. Nothing interested me in it after I saw it twice and skipped to the ep. V7: A really good song, some good scenes in it, the hints in it have some fun in it too. V1: A good way to introduce the show and a very good song despite not hearing this will be the day that much. V6: The best song with great scenes for V6 events. V2: Third favourite song and nice transactions despite being short. V8: Okay, this intro had me thinking because of how genius it was. The song had some good hints and great to listen to. The visuals are a chef kiss with love to it. Don't know what they were thinking of making the intro but keep it guys. I don't expect V9 to be as good as V8 in the visuals and hints but I won't mind it that much.
My friends told me I was crazy for liking For Every Life over the other intros. But like you put the imagery and stuff is just so cool! It’s also my second favorite song in the show next to Red like Roses Pt. 1&2 I enjoyed the video!
I agree with a song being lower in the ranking for not being able to hear the words in the actual song. season 3 was low on my list as well. also the bored shots in the intro were a choice alright. Come to think of it sometimes I just let the intro play while I check something in another tab as I wait for the show proper to start really
Honestly time to say goodbye has been my favourite since I first saw it but volume 8 has become my favourite since the journey all of the RWBY cast has gone on, hits so hard with the line _we said goodbye, to all the things we love_ it's just 👌 for me. Can't wait for Volume 8 ost to be released.
I liked watching this while I was on my way home, gotta find more stuff like this. It was nice not having to hop from one song to another I've heard fifty times over. Thanks for this. ❤
im really not sure why but the part at 23:35 when your thinking its a synth board and then just the animation of wigglign across the screen and then : THATS SOME GOOD SHIT. had me wheezing XD
Honestly this is incredible! I had such a good time watching you analyse all of these, and it really reminded me just how much hype the Intros can really lend to the seasons. Those first two were just so gooooood.
Great video! "Time to say Goodbye" is my favorite intro as well. Slight nitpick though. Ruby DID actually fight Cinder in Vol 2 during the Ball. Weiss vs Emerald is the only fight we have yet to see at all.
12:34 Never call this image trash, I call it a comedic masterpiece. I'm joking btw it's your opinion plus I'm technically insulting it too. Me and my friend made so many jokes on Oscar's pose
Wow I’m shocked by how similar our rankings are, although when it falls hitting so low did kinda hurt haha For me I’d switch v8 and v1, and move v3 up to after v6, making v7 last. So like v2, v1, v8, v6, v3, v4, v5, v7
I wasn't expecting three to be first up, but it actually makes sense after the analysis. I personally like it, but maybe that's in part because three is my favorite volume as a whole. As for volume two's opening, absolutely love it. I love how it builds the theme of shit starting to get serious and an impending storm on the horizon.
Id say that volume 8’a intro spoils the most the most blatantly. I spent most of the volume wondering “ok we’re already halfway through when is the virus and when are they gonna fall.”
If monty oum stayed alive I think the story and lack of spoilers would make rwby really nice, monty was a fun guy idk what he thinks about his series now
Yes thank god somebody else feels the way I feel about the volume three into, I’ve always hated it but I’ve never heard anyone else articulate the same feeling. It’s like two banshees walking over hot coals.
34:50 My favorite part of the chess analogy used here is that ironwood is seen next to the king piece and Salem is with the queen piece saying they are the black king and white queen respectively And while the queen can be the physically strongest piece they are infinitely replaceable
I don’t like the volume 5 opening in how the music, while nice, and the opening itself being decent, doesn’t match well when put together. Like you pointed out with the I won’t die lyric part. Again, still pretty good in some areas, the beginning and end in particular, but the song and intro don’t match at all. I agree with a lot of this list, great video critter!
A pretty neat detail you may have missed in For Every Life's track is that at the introduction to the chorus ( and throughout the rest of the opening) when Penny flies up and turns to face them, you can actually hear Cinder's theme very briefly from the drawn out vocals and notes before speeding up back to normal. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JTKlwsxM5lA.html - Cinder's theme What this could mean? Well, Cinder as a threat isn't even seen by any of the main characters until the very end with the exception of Penny, who is now facing the heroes. She is an unseen adversary, but potentially the most dangerous, as the pattern of her leitmotif's notes keep playing throughout the rest of the intro, even right before RWBY fall. I believe that this (and the scene of Cinder walking past the frozen battle) allude to the line where Ruby has confirmed their plan of evacuation and states 'And hope that we thought of everything.' When they forgot to take Cinder's presence into account. However, though she isn't seen with them until the finale, we as viewers know that she is on the hunt, and ever so present. Honestly, even if this is possibly just a coincidence, it's my favourite part of the whole intro.
I'm the opposite when it comes to openings. I appreciate visuals more than the music and I especially appreciate when the visuals work with the song really well. I definitely would have placed the openings myself in a different order but I also agree with your criticism on them.
Now that I think about it, if I could go for a different type of opening for RWBY, I'd go for a softer one like Gankutsuou or Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Mostly because I'd like to hear Casey's voice in a more natural range, and because I like instrumentals. On a very tangent, have you ever considered going in-depth talking about the morals and ethics of Team RWBY throughout the show? This is due to potential Protagonist Centered Morality thing.
You put so much thought into the visuals of the opening and the symbolism said visuals entail... To be honest, a lot of these are things I never really thought about too much. I don't like the volume 1 op though, simply because the graphics (and the rest of the volume) have this blur/bloom effect or whatever you call it that I find super obnoxious; it makes me feel like my vision from my eyes is blurry when that's not the case.
I just thought of something. What if Whitley was not only a servant but Klein's son as well! Hell, he could've even be dopey since I can't remember if he was one of Klein's personality. He could've been a sweet yet naive retainer to Weiss who, like Klein, wanted to see her safe and happy. Not to mention I think it's implied that Klein was Weiss's only friend or at least a better father figure that Jacq-ass was.
There is no way you think penny being in the opening spoils her being alive, they show her in the very first episode of the volume and show the opening at the end.
I loved this video. With all the talk of toxic negativity, what you've done here is to be negative (I mean REALLY negative - lol) about certain things without being toxic. You made clear it was just your subjective opinion, and you never called anyone an idiot, or incompetent, or that they should be set on fire. Of course all of that would have been for nothing if the contend hadn't been good; which it was. That having been said, it's too bad you were totally wrong about the #1 slot "They see you as small and helpless They see you as just a child Surprise when they find out that a warrior will soon run wild." That's it. That's all it took to make this the best opening ever. (I joke of course. This is just my fav.) It doesn't hurt that I think the first 8 min and 46 sec of episode 1 are the best two back to back scenes in the whole run of the show.
3 years later I just wanted to say the spoilers in the openings are things revealed in the first episodes and the first episodes don’t have the opening at the beginning but rather the end if my memory is correct
1:42 just remember, the volume 2 fight sequence might have sucked since we never actually saw it, but remember we were robbed of a fight scene where Jaune is actually competent for once
Video title: “RWBY Openings Best to Worst” The Judgmental Critter: “Today I’m gonna rank the RWBY openings from worst to best” *Something’s wrong, I can feel it*
I think one of the biggest reasons V2's opening is the best in my (an a lot of people's) opinion is that the visuals match the speed and intensity of the song. Some of the later volumes have a problem where it'll linger on parts of their opening while the song is going crazy, which can feel underwhelming or even awkward. V2 visuals are just as wild and quick-changing as the song is, probably because its half the length of the later openings, so they didnt have to spread out their limited budget like the other openings do.
I really do agree with you to be honest The openings getting longer and longer kinda annoy me cause the pacing of some episodes are horrible and it just takes up so much damn time along with the ending sequence.
Something I really love about rwby openings is that the lyrics always kinda hint to either what’s going to happen in the volume or what the characters feel throughout each volume without really spoiling anything. The lyrics are always so clever and when you give the song a listen after finishing the said volume you’re always met with realizations that you couldn’t perceive until you actually watched the volume
Personally I’d have to put “This will be the day,” as number 1 for me. Even after all these years it’s my favorite RWBY song. Though I do agree Volume 2’s opening has better art use, even if the song isn’t as great. Volume 8’s opening I’d have to put at 3rd. The songs fine and the art is great. But I feel that the opening spoils too many major story events in the opening.
