aw man did we really cut out the pseudo-explanation of Nora's semblance awakening-

Ok notes time. The color-grading in this is fantastic and probably the best of Redux so far I enjoyed the incorporation of the Blake character short and it leading into Ilia's note BUT I won't lie that Blake's stuff feels really out of place here because it's so disconnected from WY and RNJR's stories coming together lol The cutting and transition of the Oscar training scenes from 4 and 5 was great and it helped it flow well. Plus I think the dialogue trimming of the outside training scene is the best so far. HOWEVER, the Ruby and Oscar felt wayyyy too trimmed and suffered from that problem of dialogue not being allowed to breathe again. I especially feel cutting the line "I am scared but not just for me" is a negative because it's a simple but important line for Ruby's character, showing that she absolutely is showing more care for others than her own mental health. The Raven talk on the other hand? Almost perfect. I personally would have kept the "It's what huntsmen and huntresses do" line from Yang and some of the reaction breaks because having Raven go straight into ranting about huntsmen motives and STRQ's backstories feels like she's just rambling off exposition and it's less digestable. Cutting the stuff about Raven telling them "the truth" does WONDERS though cause that dialogue gave us all so much hype only to hear stuff we pretty much already knew. I get why you cut Vernal entering because going straight to Weiss's "Yang please" feels more character driven but it's just awkward to see her in shots with no visual entrance so it's probably better to have just kept it for continuity. The bird form reveal was almost flawless but cutting the pause before "All I care about is making sure my sister is safe" honestly killed the tension and made the scene feel like it was pushing through the moment. I will admit the cutting of dinner prep is saddening because I understand it may not tied well with everything. I personally would have kept Oscar entering the room because the scene just feels like it's missing emotional processing time without it and it also makes another continuity mistake with Oscar being in the final shot. All in all, very solid and probably my... third favorite Redux chapter so far? 4 and especially 2 are definitely higher lol

I found it interesting to see the two Oscar scenes back to back. I might’ve spaced them out a bit, help sell that time has passed between the training scene and Ruby’s speech, but I do get why it’s like that. Blake’s stuff being in the middle would’ve been an awkward segway.

Only thing I'd point out (that hasn't already been mentioned anyway) is the Ruby helping cook that leads into her exiting to meet the others. Mainly cause it gives a feeling of "buffer time" to have Yang, Weiss, and Qrow get their things situated to come in to Ruby who's just finishing her own situating things. Instead of a hard cut to Ruby dropping the tea at seeing Yang. Just a minor thing, overall enjoyed the incorporation of Blake's character short, several other bits that were added or shifted, and the general feel of it. The next few episodes are probably some of my highest thresholds for several reasons, but given what's been shown so far I'm leaning towards them being improved instead of me being let down by their handling. I'm being vague cause dunno if spoilers are open since this is technically the same material just shifted, so strange territory for spoiler warning.

While I did enjoy this episode (like always lol) I do think cutting off the semblance dialogue is a bit strange. The actual scene itself not only adds some comedy (and explanation) from Nora, but it puts the idea of discovering a semblance back into the audience's mind in preperation for Jaune eventually unlocking his in the Volume 5 finale. I get shortening the scene in order to stay consistent with Oscar's storyline, but even then, the cut to the dojo scene doesnt have any breathing room for establishing passed time, and it cuts character building by not showing RNJR talking to Oscar like he's an actual person and not just their reincarnated professor Anyway, this was just a small nitpick and I can still appreciate all the hard work you both have put into this series overall. I cant wait to see the rest of it!

Raven is such an awesome character! I got to rewatch this show again!

Cut out Weiss’ “You know, you’re really obnoxious,” line, 0/10. Fr tho, loved how you incorporated the Ilia trailer, though it’s a shame we didn’t have any original OST that could work properly over the changing fast-slow tempo of the scene. Wouldn’t have minded including some more of the semblance chat, either; the cut with Nora makes it seem like discovering his semblance is some big goal for Oscar but he’s a wizard so that ain’t ever gonna pay off. And this isn’t even up to you, but is it just me who feels like Yang’s hair is so much less vibrant in V4 and 5 compared to 1-3?

Oh, I've been wondering if you gonna use the Blake's V5 character short since you used Weiss's. I always loved how that short goes more into detail on Ilia's backstory than actual volume did. I like how you added into the chapter proper. I like cut/transition from Nora's line to the dojo. Another chapter ending on a hug. AW!

i enjoyed how much this episode focused on entrances and exits, and on choices you can't come back from. it's very much a "threshold" episode, both literally and figuratively. it's about the rift in blake & ilia's friendship, the broken relationship between yang and raven that can't even be mended by a physical reunion, and both oscar and ruby reflecting on events out of their control that they have to just live with now. i also like that raven's portal was juxtaposed with ruby's cup breaking. it's really emphasizing the choice yang made. oh, and i *just* realized that ruby's cup breaking calls back to yang spilling her cup when she gets mad about raven badmouthing her family. i can see why you held off on blake's character short til now! and as much as i miss that tidbit of nora backstory, it definitely didn't fit the melancholy tone you established for the rest of the episode. great job!

This flows so much better omg. Also I find it helpful to put Adam's character short somewhere in the middle of the season, since he plays a role here and we get to see Sienna in action

Another great episode. I dont quiet get the theme youre going for with today's edit but the pacong is much better and the colour grading is immaculate.

I feel like this will be a running criticism - cutting out pauses between lines makes them sound unnatural and robotic, like characters talking over each other to get the script out as fast as possible, and thus killing any tension the scene has

For those commenting about why the Semblance Dialogue is cut out is that it's actually not stating anything new. It's only there to tell Oscar and since dialogue insertions without animation is harder, he likely decided to cut it short. The series exists to fix the flow issue of Volume 5 afterall.

I think it would be neat if after all this is done you look back at everything you accomplished with the volume 5 redux and look at any criticisms you may have had with a fresh mind. I think a lot of people have good points and I would love to see a response or explanation to them and your decisions.

I think some of the event reordering is good, and cutting some deadline is good too but I feel like you're cutting some, not particularly significant, but parts that add some buildup that let some scenes really hit, and some details that don't seem important at first watch but do have some cool foreshadowing. Character building scenes like the talk after training I think shouldn't be removed. No way. Only reason I can think you would is shooting for a specific episode time.

Ah shit, you didn't have to play that "Gold" leitmotif for that last scene, you bastard. 🥲 Got me tearing up for RWBY again. Never thought I'd see the day, but excellent chapter. While I won't judge whether this is better or worse than the original, I will say that for me, this has proven to be a more enjoyable experience so far.
