To clarify to those who are saying Maria's weapons are dual scythes, they are actually Kamas, small Japanese sickles that were originally used to cut crops then used in martial arts. Grim Reapers use scythes which are giant sickles. Since Maria's weapons were shrouded in legend and only known in name, it's no surprise Qrow thought it was big.
I think Qrow knew what her weapons were. Maria was hidden but The Grimm Reaper seemed to be pretty famous. He probably just preferred the bigger weapon.

Ah... Now think I see... Tock's Semblance: Invulnerability. If at least for 60 seconds. Hence the watch to keep track of time. Not that it helped her in the end, though: Backstab + Decap = Fatality.
So she basically has infinite aura, but only for 60 seconds at a time. And her limiter is probably something like a recharge time where she is vulnerable for 5 minutes after that minute is up.
@@CWINDOWSsystem32 Possibly even more. I'd assume that it takes as long for her aura to regenerate after that as it would for a normal person who's aura had been completely depleted. It honestly could take hours.
It's a really interesting semblance. But it would be best used if it's on a fight you either have difficulties with, or if you want to finish it quickly. Either way, I think I found my new favorite minor character here. That and the nice reference to Tic Toc the Crocodile.
After seeing Tock in action (who has a powerful semblance if used correctly combined with her faunus traits, too bad she's dead). It's honestly boggles the mind of the number of potential characters over the years, that were sent to their deaths because they were caught up in a never-ending dispute between immortal ex's, like damn!.
I interpret it as She In A Way freezes Her Aura so all damage taken is Absorbed into the Aura Like Shock Absorption and when the time limit ends, All damage that was taken during her semblance takes its toll on The Aura, Which is why I think when she got Scythe stabbed in the Back she used up all her aura And Was therefore vulnerable
Maria...from a badass Jedi like Obi-Wan....to a Yoda like mentor for Ruby Rose....perhaps Ruby could take up Maria’s legacy and become the new Grimm Reaper

I'd rather you try and point towards someone who has actual critical thinking. While I like some of Vexed's videos. It just oozes with bias.
She struggles against a single Nevermore and the moment the fight turns against her because she failed to kill it with normal means she panic used her Insta win button and then she lost to a group of nobodies and a croc girl who can't dodge a blade from behind her despite fully knowing it's ability...I'll say she had a cool design tho
@@jameswestern3931 dude, she *OWNED* that nevermor. She just didn't bother wasting more time when she was caught off guard. She definitely could've still killed it without her silver eyes. And non of the goons were able to touch her, except for the one with aura who was sent to kill her, which means she was very well up to the task. So it's still impressive to have come out alive when out numbered and nearly out matched.
@@blueblade6174 She took multiple blows to take it down and then assumed it was dead and got knocked back and panicked and used her eyes, you can't deny that as you can see it on her face...meanwhile Coco is killing multiple Nevermores of the slightly smaller calibure effortlessly and team RWBY killed the same type of Nevermore before they joined beacon and we're supposed to believe she's some type of legend? As for the fight with the goons she barely used her gravity powers to the degree she used against the Nevermore which could've greatly helped at keeping the nasty croc away. She's like one of the low high-teir characters from the show as we've seen others do better and it seems she relied too heavily on using her eyes since if she was pressured by one lone Nevermore to use them it must be a regular occurrence.
@@jameswestern3931 the fact that she can solo a giant nevermor as quickly as she did shows how elite she is. And she's a legend cause of how easily she can defeat the Grimm. If she assumed it was dead but wasn't considering her experience, then it just shows that it was a bit stronger than normal. And she did use her gravity against the goons.
Oh my, I didn't think seeing Qrow brag himself could make me cry. I was clearly not ready to see him smile and all. Maria's past was awesome, the fight in 60 real seconds and the silver eyes... It was so damn good. This Volume is so good. Am I the only one to find that Maria being the "idol" of Qrow is awesome ? I mean, he based his weapon on hers. She is the one who inspired the creation of the scythe (Ozpin said there are only two, Qrow and Ruby's) which also mean Ruby indirectly based her own weapon on Maria's. This is a really nice transition to show that her mentor is no longer Qrow but Maria. Also, since Qrow based his weapon on Maria's, it means he admires her since... high school I guess ? I just can't stop thinking about teenager Qrow discovering Legendary Huntsman as Maria and telling himself more and more "I don't want to go back to the tribe, I want to be someone good just like them, I know I can" and Raven being like "Don't be a fool" "I wanted to be as good as you ! -Well, I'm nothing but a disapointment, so you're well on your own" Oh man. This one was so painful. Meeting your idol who maybe totally changes your life by convincing you indirectly that you can be someone good, just to hear her say that you're a failure. Seriously, how much is he gonna take ? I mean, I know it's his arc and that he'll have to struggle with his issues but just-just stop it ! He can't deal with EVERYTHING going bad on his life ! It's quite incredible, how people can complain about him and his alcoholism when the only good thing that Qrow still have in his life is Ruby. And nothing. Else. I'm seriously asking myself how he has not already killed himself, because I know that I couldn't stand my whole life breaking just before my eyes and not being able to do something to stop it. On the other hand, it's really amazing what is happening since chapter 4, that I didn't even notice at first. In fact, every character is indirectly teaching Qrow one thing, and that is by learning that that he is getting better. Ruby told him that talking about problems is not being weak, Weiss showed him that alcohol is not the answer (thinking about her own mother ?), Maria... Well, Maria was a legend. Someone he admired. And there she said "I'm nothing but a disapointment". I think that Qrow by hearing these words, realized that Maria has no self-esteem, just like he does. In the rest of the chapter, he's often alone, and looks like he is lost in his thoughts. I believe that this makes him realized his own issues, and that he's trying to see how to deal with them instead of running away like he always did, because he is too scared to be left alone with his Semblance and ending becoming someone bad again. I really love Arnold's analysis of Qrow so far, it's really nice to see someone actually worrying for him, trying to understand him and not complaining or laughing at him. Otaku Girl my thoughts exactly, my headcanon of Qrows past life was that Qrow was an asshole. Who hated himself since no one wanted him, thus acted like a prick and maltreated everyone around him. Specifically his team, yet Summer and Maria pulled him out of his self-loathing and lack of legitimate self worth-even if for a time. But after Raven turned her back on him, Summer died, Tai now hates him, Ruby and Yang now shackled to an infinite war he'd tried so hard to protect them from. Not only having countless friends killed by Salem, however Ozpin basically telling him everything Qrow has given to save all he has left is pointless. That'd be it for me as well, why he hasn't offed himself NOW is as shocking to me as it if you.
@@violetraven8323 I really like your point of view ! I honestly never thought that he could have been an asshole, but now that you said it, it seems really logical. I personally think that he and Raven were like really quiet, mysterious and scary persons because of the fact that they grew up in the tribe (thieves, killers) and were in "mission" at Beacon, and that Qrow became more and more of "a good person" thanks to Summer, Ozpin whereas Raven didn't because she chose to stay alone, loyal to the tribe. The fact is that, no matter what his past really was, Qrow went through so much as you said and it really makes me sad that he has to struggle with everything, like becoming someone good was not the right thing for him, that he should have follow the other way. Strength come not in taking the good path, but in keep walking no matter what happens. And Qrow is much stronger than I thought he could be. May him live till the end.

These enigmatic oddities that pooped out of mid-air with no background there familiar with. Fun Fact: Since Qrow's confirmed mythological inspiration is Norse(e.i. Based off of Obin's birds Muygwn), that slanted cross he wears around his neck. In Nordic culture symbolizes "Loss of something/someone that cannot be lived without" and/or "Loss to the point of being empty"(just thought you'd think that'd be interesting😁)

I would say Maria's "Scythes" are more accurately described as kama, a Japanese weapon based on a farming implement. The reason? Scythes require two hands to wield whereas kama are small enough to be used single handed (just like a sickle). The kama's blade is similar to the scythe's blade in shape then a sickle's blade. A sickle's blade is more curved (a sickle looks like a question mark ? a kama and a scythe look like an inverted J). Hey maybe Maria will pass on the remaining kama to Ruby and she could mod Crescent Rose to use gravity dust and pair them. That would be cool, the smaller blade can be thrown or used to melee closer in. She could repaint it red and black (name it "Lil' Red') .

And they clearly went all-out on the visual connections, aside from Qrow saying that he'd modeled his weapon off Maria's. If you look closely, the blades on Maria's weapons are virtually *identical* to Crescent Rose, except for the obvious smaller size and lack of the red/black color scheme. The same rear claws, the same three segments on the main blade, and the same unfurling animation. The only small difference is that the segment at the tip of the blade doesn't uncurl all the way on Maria's weapons, whereas it does on Ruby's.

Salem wants Ruby alive but Tock's master (probably Salem too) was fine with Maria being dead. Either it's because Salem doesn't think of Ruby as a threat or there was someone else gunning for the silver eyes. Either way, at least they explained why Cinder didn't kill Ruby in Volume 5.

12:48 It's a small detail here, but i really like how Maria transforming her weapon put her at a disadvantage, usually there are weapons in Rwby that have more flaws in them when transformed like with Qrow's weapon and Tock exploits its flaw as a staff by holding the weapon in place with her blades on the opposite sides of the weapon and biting the wooden portion. If she kept it dual sickle then she would still have her eyes.
Not really, her shifting into a much more defensive weapon when out numbered AND auraless is a really smart strategy, but a metal mouthed crocodile faunus is a bit of a unpredictable outlier 😅

It would be so AWSOME, if Maria is friends with Summer. Just the fact that this is a backstory and or what if she met Summer and you know they talked together, etc then after that Summer had Ruby then asked Maria to protect her and then went to a mission and never went back then a few weeks later Maria found out that Summer is passed away. Then after that she went to Ruby and this happend and she lost her eyes and she went fixed/surgery her eyes and never showed and years later her eyes are better and she start looking for Ruby and that why shes here?!!! This is just a theory of mine because that would be awsome!!!
Going by the timelines of how old team RWBY are, when the cut-off point is for when Raven could have acquired Maiden powers (word of god says 30 is the upper limit on that) and how old Maria looks in the present (I'd say she's about 60 now) and the flashback (maybe around 30), it would seem like the flashback is around 30 years ago, when Raven/Qrow and the rest of team STRQ would have been about 9/10. This is assuming Raven got pregnant with Yang right after finishing at beacon at 21/22, and then becoming Spring before the cutoff at age 30. So Maria was already well out of the Huntress business before anyone on team STRQ even attended beacon.
I dunno if anyone has mentioned this but the child did match Terra's apparence so it could be hers from an earlier relationship or thru other methods then adaption.

I actually started bawling from relief and happiness when Ren hugged Yang and Jaune hugged Blake after Team QRWBY got to Argus. We never really see these people interact and real interaction between the teams in general is rare enough as it is. I'm dying from happiness

Maria Vs. Tock (+Fodder) Is my FAVORITE fight of all Rwby, Maria's fighting style flows so well with Tock keeping up with her, using her 60 sec. Of invincibility to the fullest. And imagine hunters and people 80+(?) years ago (Maria age) who could claim to have single handedly taken down a Nevermore, although Maria had to rely on her silver eyes when she got cocky and didn't double tap, but still, she had the *balls* to 1v1 airborne juggle a *Nevermore*
Imo Tock is basically "old school Tyrian". Then everyone died again in this immortal war. Seems Salem has a preference for there always to be a "off" person on her team at any given time

The first half of this chapter was badass, the second half was wholesome :') Saffron and Terracotta are adorable omg , I hope we see more of them. Still holding out for Raven & Tai though, they teased it last volume, I know it's gotta be coming soon :o
