@@ohokay9420 But let me remind everyone that Team RNJR was only barely able to beat the _one_ Nuckelavee. The reason that Team RWBY was forced to retreat was that they were confronted by an _entire horde_ of Apathy Grimm. Heck, we even find in the journal that Bartelby was able to handle two Apathy Grimm, at least enough to get them into the waterways to begin with. Nuckelavee is both more dangerous and scarier.
꿈구름 Actually Fun Fact, Mike (One of the crwby people and also the person who had created the Apathy Grimm), has said in his twitter, this: “A lot of people would describe the opposite of Love as Hate, but I disagree. Love is the most powerful, extreme emotion a person can feel. The opposite of that is nothing. The opposite of Love is Apathy. And Apathy, to me, is the scariest thing in the world.” so maybe at that moment, since they are sisters, their love or bond for each other is the strongest, when Ruby had screamed upon seeing Apathy, Yang broke from it because *Love* is the opposite of Apathy, and maybe that’s what was strongest at that time, because Yang wouldn’t bear to lose her sister now. (Then again if this doesn’t make sense, it’s ok, I’m kinda stupid, but if somebody does understands this, pls try to word it better than me T^T because I’m really bad at wording these kinds of things).
This volume has been easily one of if not the best volume so far. The story’s been moving at a good pace, the characters are interacting and engaging in meaningful and compelling ways, we’re finally getting some long awaited answers, it seems like pretty much all the major criticisms leveled towards V5 have been accounted for, NEO!, they’re focusing on only one storyline and one major subplot, and the animation is as good as ever. We’re also only half way through, so I hope it keeps up on this incredible track, and from what I’ve heard about this episode... I am damn excited!
I mean, if they keep up what they are doing, manage to actually make Adam and Cinder good characters, and go more in depth with Hazel's motivation then that takes care of all the major criticisms that the show had.
lovetheoandainyou. I think what makes the exposition in Chapter 7 so much better is because they aren't just sitting and listening to someone talk. There is actually moving backgrounds to go along with it.
A Grimm that doesn’t have to kill you but clean up what’s left. Truly a fearsome creature. Thankfully team Rwby had the power of the sun on their side!
Yeah, we saw through Maria's eyes there. Everything was Monochromatic. Bluish teal everything, just with different tints, shades, and saturations. So it makes sense she wouldn't know Ruby had silver eyes. Edit: Someone that replied to this comment spoils what happened to Maria's eyes. If you are not a first member and do not want to be spoiled, don't read the replies till after the video goes public on the 15th.
well she depends on those prosthetic eyes to see and as she mentioned prior they are in need of repairs so she gets by but just barely my guess (and im just shooting in the dark here) that arnold is onto something, that maria over abused her grimm reaper like ability the silver eyes brought and it made her blind or atleast dulled her eyesight to the point of requiring prosthetic eyes to get by
Dude, the WOR is full of grimm, of course we're going to expect something like "FEAR", and they did a good doing it, now i really feel like sleeping late lol
MurderofBirds hey Arnold, I've got a RWBY Theory for you I'd like to see Adam vs Blake, Yang, Sun and Ilia in RWBY one day, because it reminds me of the fight animation that Monty made to My Lecon
This volume is for me one of the best so far. It was awesome having Grimms that don't make physical but mental damages. And I just loved how each character handled it in his own way. I think that Weiss and Yang were the ones who suffered most because they have the most fragile minds. I am NOT saying that they are weak, but that they went through such traumatic things and that's why the Grimm's effect worked a lot on them. Just like Blake who feels guilty for everything she has done by the past, those two are still suffering from what they have seen and lived : nearly died (Volume 3 and 5), losing an arm, being betrayed by her own family, failing to save friends... With Ozpin's reveal, they all seemed to have losen at least a part of trust in the future of humanity, and that is what the Grimm used against them. Their already existing doubts and negativity. I loved the fact that some characters didn't become as negative as others, like Maria and Ruby because they are both not trapped by their past and regrets, and they keep trying to always move forward, but also Oscar who didn't become negative like the others but just passive. It is nice to see that the youngest is one of the character with the less negativity, even with everything that happened. I think that's because he knows that even if life is not easy right now, it will get better. He decided to fight for people but he knows that there are lives he won't be able to save, that's it. If he tries, if he moves forward it will be better than doing nothing. Now, Qrow. It surprised me but I really found Qrow awesome during this episode. He was already very negative, thinking he was just a pawn and everything after Ozpin's reveal. The grimm's effect is like testing their spirit, showing their doubt and what they really think. Qrow said that he will wake them up, so he wanted to not sleep, I assume it was in order to protect them. (Funny thing, even if he fell asleep, he is still the one who unconsciously wake Ruby up) When Ruby tries to wake him up, he said "Leave me alone" and pushed her away. I don't think he was trying to be mean, I think he was acting like he always did : isolating himself to protect others from his Semblance. He must have done it all his life to still make it while sleeping. Later, when she tells him he can talk to her and she hugs him, he just said he wanted to leave and didn't really hug her back. Maybe he didn't want to look weak. Or perhaps he just didn't know how to react to people worrying for him and showing him kindness, because it nearly never happened. While the others wanted to give up and start a new life, he just kept asking to be left behind, alone : this man wanted to sacrifice himself to save everyone from him. That episode really makes me relate to Qrow. If you look closer, you can see he always put others before himself because he has nearly no self-esteem. And that is the case because only one person believed in him and gave him a place before, and Qrow can't trust this person anymore because well, if he lied to him about beating Salem, then he surely lied to him about the fact that he could be someone too ? That is also why I think Ozpin left : seeing Qrow's despair, his low self-esteem being destroyed by himself without being able to save it, was unbearable. He must feel really guilty, as guilty as Qrow is now broken and blaming himself for everything, even if it's not always his fault. It wouldn't surprised me if they were both thinking that everything would have been better without them, and hoping to disappear (Ozpin being immortal, don't you dare do it Qrow). And Qrow's look when he saw the Grimms... I bet he's just gonna feel guiltier for not protecting the others when he should have. I hope it's gonna make him realize that he has no choice other than starting to move forward again, but I have a feeling that he said to himself "I'm endangering them and I'm useless, I didn't protect them when they nearly died... I should just give up". I will keep saying that but please, please just let Ozpin and Qrow talk and apologize. They are the only ones who can save each other.
Pretty much my thoughts word for word. I'm glad the people that destroyed volumes 4 and 5 with irrational arguments are shutting up (mostly). I think however that Blake was affected a lot too - i find very symbolic that she is the one to fall behind during the escape from the sewers.
Hot damn, that is draining to read that much without a break, which you should do to it in parts. I feel like the Apathy is affecting me looking at your comment. 😂
@@edoardoprevelato6577 I agree with you, and it's interesting because she didn't seem affected, but she is the one who was the closest to the death in this episode. It shows that she always hide her pain and doubt, and now it nearly seems she no longer have them, but it's false. She's just hiding them, and sometimes it shows like in this episode. I really enjoyed how well this episode was written and how logical the characters acted.
I agree, the most emotional part of how the Apathy works is that it is amplifying emotions that the individual characters already have. Under normal circumstances, those characters can suppress their doubts and control their negative emotions, but they rise to the surface with the negative influence of something like the Apathy. That's why Yang and Weiss especially looked so shaken when they were driving away from the farm at the end of the episode. While they are genuinely sorry for the things they said, they both also know that they do have those thoughts and doubts they were putting into words, and that they'll have to confront them at some point. Also, about Qrow, when you said that maybe he doesn't know how to react to people worrying for him because it rarely happened, I had another thought. It's also possible that he's hesitant to accept that help from Ruby because he did allow someone to get emotionally close to him in the past, and it didn't end well ( Summer).
Miles said on Twitter that he was inspired to create the Apathy after he watched Serenity (the firefly movie) and this Grimm was created during the 1st Volume. He showed Monty it.
I think this episode is not about Roman's back stories or anything. It's probably more about indirectly telling the audience what could happen to people when they lost goals/motivations/will to go on. And the lesson is, one has to keep on going even if things are unclear/lost at the moment. Life goes on with or without us sulking in the corners, so it do us no good to be stagnant.
This episode man. The effects of the apathy (?) were so subtle that it just gave an eerie feeling when you slowly notice a hint of something being off.
This was such a great episode. My favorite scene actually had to be Ruby getting pissed at her team, like, “What’s WRONG with you guys?!” Awesome voice acting, Lindsay! Wow...
DEAR GOD! I thought the Nuckelavee Grimm was creepy with all it's twitchy movements and screeching, then the Dark Brother apepared with his Nuckelavee-like twitchy movements and weird, inverted crawling, but now, now the freaking _Apathy_ take the cake for freaky freaks.
can you imagine combos of the apathy grimm and other grimm? the nuckelavee was a prick on its own right... can you imagine it marching alongside a horde of apathy? ooh ooh… I have a better one... a grimm dragon that spawns apathy grimm… yeah that would have sucked... and through these combos we now know... Salem is going easy on them... hmm... perhaps she is redeemable after all... (edit) also... 13:15 "a girl's in trouble D: "
I get this is probably a joke but Salem doesn't control every grimm. Hell I'm not even sure if she can create them since when we see a beowulf being born they're from the black pits that the God of Darkness spawned.
nkondilis1997 seriously though I know that Grimm can learn and have some sort of intelligence, but if some of them had enough to team up remnant would be screwed. A group of maybe 5 apathy isnt to bad but a group of ten? Combined with a a stronger more offensive Grimm is terrifying.
I've thought about that too. However, the biggest thing we'd need to know first is exactly what having Silver Eyes means for a person. Jaune can amplify one's aura, so their healing, semblance, and whatever else it can do; but do we really know if Silver Eyes are connected to one's aura? Do they function as essentially having a second semblance in your arsenal, or are they tied to something else? Given that we saw the God of Light use that ability in Chapter 3, I'm inclined to believe that they're actually a form of Remnant 1.0 magic, like what the maiden's wield and Salem and Ozpin possess, and I don't think we've ever had any evidence that Jaune can amplify that kind of stuff.
It doesnt matter how strong you are if you lack the will.......its an enemy that you cant really fight (without Silver Eyes to neutralize the Grims effect)
I mean. You probably can fight them, sure they have that effect mentslly but if you're able to push forward they're not strong in combat so they could get mowed down instantly.
I still love how the grimm are attracted/take down their targets based on emotions. The Apathy are such a cool representation, they don't weaken their targets, they simply drain their will to move on.
Just a quick note. Neither Grimm type in the Chapter 1 premiere is a Sphinx. A Sphinx is a creature with a lion-like body and a human face. What they fought were Manticores and a Chimera(body and head of a lion, wings of an eagle, and a snake for a tail).
Yes, according to the Egyptian version of the Sphinx, that is correct. But in the Greek myths about it (guarding the gates of Thebes by giving riddles), the Sphinx did have eagle wings and a snake tail, and might've actually been the daughter of the Chimera. Plus, Rooster Teeth has stated officially that it is called the Sphinx Grimm. Of course, it still doesn't have a human head, but most Grimm aren't 100% the same as the creature that they're based on. For example, the Nuckalavee doesn't have extendable arms in the real-world myth about it, and the Beowolf's name is probably based on Beowulf, a hero from an old english tale who, to my knowledge, isn't a wolf.
I have a theory explaining why Ruby wasn’t affected as much. I think she wasn’t affected because she doesn’t have anything that is bothering her. Yang has ptsd. Weiss not wanting to go back to Altas and face her father. Blake having guilt over what happened to Yang. Qrow not wanting his bad luck. I don’t have anything for Oscar.
To be fair Ruby does have plenty of grief to deal with (Summer, Penny, Pyrrha, etc) but she isn't as crippled by it as the others sometimes get by their problems.
(SPOILERS) So anyone else got the Legend of Zelda ReDead monster vibes from the apathy Grimm they appear in Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker & Twilight Princess
Since I haven't seen anyone mention it after looking through quite a few comments, Bartleby the Scrivener was a man who became apathetic about everything and eventually died of starvation since he didn't care enough to eat anything. His signature response was "I would prefer not to."
I'm sure I'm not the first to say this (haven't gone on r/rwby since this chapter came out), but I think the only reason they didn't sleep until they died is that Ruby woke up when the empty bottle fell out of Qrow's hand. It's kind of like the concept of a kick from the movie Inception. Another instance is when Yang and the others get jolted out of their apathy after Ruby screams in the sewers. I'm definitely interested to hear other interpretations though! I'm also extremely concerned that either chapter 8 or volume 8 will have some monumentally bad shit in it since Maria flung the eighth and final book away.
It is going down in volume 8, pretty sure. I am scared of what is going to happen. But yeah, the Apathy's power seems to be weak to surprise or shock. That jolt of adrenaline is enough to shake up out of their trance.
@@95dubstepfan Even though ironically, from Salem's perspective, this is shaping up to be a bigger L than Haven by a long shot. Despite what ground she's gained, she's lost some things that will make it a lot harder to win going forward.
Reminds me of that WOR episode on Grimm, where it's said that keeping Grimm captive usually ends with the Grimm dying in captivity or breaking free and killing their captor. Love these little moments that show just how easy it is to fuck up and get killed out in the wilderness.
Apathy are by far the absolute scariest Grimm ever shown. The end of episode 5 and the whole of episode 6 are like a miniature horror movie. Just the build of them all being "So tired" for seemingly little reason, and then that shot of Blake just mumbling "It's fine" as the horde bears down on her with those creepy claws. It's legitimately chilling; the Apathy are the only Grimm which are actually disturbing and terrifying, because bigger monsters with sharper teeth can only be so intimidating when every one of the girls and boys have single-handedly cut down a countless amount.
The Apathy is a terrifying force to comprehend. It’s fridge horror. Just being around it robs you of the will to act. And when it’s closing in on you just can’t do anything. You get devoured and you just can’t care. You don’t care so much that you can’t even move.
The appearance of the grimm didn't seem too scary to me, but the effects they had on everyone and the farm's creepy backstory had me really shaken, it is just such a horrible way to die.
First of all the lighting affects! Just in the very beginning where they're in the house; with the fire going, that was just well done all around. Also I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I loved how Ruby was sitting by herself, while Yang, Blake and Weiss were sitting together, and even Qrow being in the same room as them, Ruby was by herself sitting down; that showed, at least to me the distance between them all; with Ruby not wanting to give up, and stuff. Poor Qrow, he just can't catch a break, can he? Even flattening tires and stuff; just feel bad, and I'm sure Maria doesn't know his semblance, but that was a poor choice of words there. At first I thought that Ruby was dreaming or something, and that's why everyone was acting so strangely, I mean with Yang, Weiss and Blake ganging up on Ruby like that; that was just weird, but it wasn't them still sleeping, but it was the Grimm still affecting them. I wonder though, when Ruby did wake up; what did she dream? Because she screamed when she woke up. I am loving Ruby this volume; she's really taking charge and it's just great to see. Talking about the lighting affects from earlier, those were also well done when RWBY and Maria was down in the cellar, just great. And the Crew definitely knows how to amp things up; with them running around with the creepy music. Man, those Grimm were super creepy, I don't even know why; maybe because they were the closest ones to look human? I don't know; but either way they were creepy. And Maria had silver eyes! I knew it, but a lot of us assumed it was so because of the opening, still feels nice to be right about that, though. Also minor thing I loved how Ruby went to Qrow and hugged him; and told him that he could talk to her or Yang, that was just so sweet of her to do. The opening has so far been pretty true with this volume, more so then usual; but the odd thing is we see Jaune in the opening attacking Oscar/Ozpin, about to attack him, is that just referring to what he will do once he finds out? Because Jaune hasn't shown up at all since the beginning, so I just thought that was weird. And so far Qrow hasn't been attacked/almost killed, so I think with his thing in the opening it was more symbolic then anything else (Watch me jinx it next chapter or something). Overall great chapter; really creepy vibe, which I loved. Maria has/had silver eyes confirmed which is great; I mean pretty obvious, but nice to get it actually confirmed here.
Indeed she used her powers differently thanks to Maria. Buddy, you clearly misunderstood a few things. Ruby did not use her eyes to "protect" Pyrrha! She tapped into her powers at the top of the tower due to Despair! When it came to Jaune... that was not "protect" That was fear! But with Maria guiding her... indeed! That was protecting! Why did you mention Torchwick and Neo?! That picture from the last episode might as well just be a bait! Or Red Herring!
I have a theory that The Apathy are the only Grimm that have emotions because they drain it along with the will to go on, the reason is is because when two were taken the rest followed to be with them missing them, most Grimm break out on their own but these have emotions abd wanted to help eachother
The part with Blake giving up and was about to be "clawed" by the Apathy scared me. We've seen other members of team RWBY that had the 80% of dying/being dead/about to die. First, the part where Yang lost her arm (V3) Then Weiss being 'impaled' (I'm not sorry,V5) Now Blake almost got clawed.. Now I'm worried about Ruby.. And not just her,Maria also..and Oscar..and Qrow-- OKAY ALMOST ALL OF THEM.
This Grimm I hate probably the most just because it doesn’t rely on strength, it just has the ability to drain your will to go on. It’s so simple yet so effective and scary
Strange for Grimm to create apathy, when they are attracted to emotion. And can you imagine how slow the demise of that village would have been? Some people probably starved in their beds, some with the strength to get up or even fight died in the tunnels. Some in the beds probably knew that the Apathy were there, they just didn't care. Spooky.
The Apathy is hands down the bane of all close range hunters and huntresses. I mean even slightly ranged attacked like non sniper type of gunfire from a medium range is STILL affected by the Apathy horde! It's great FINALLY see Ruby's Silver Eyes power is beginning to be explained! She's learning her power and now has someone to help her learn more about HOW to use it properly! Hopefully as well as an explanation of the power's lore! I love that Qrow's drinking problem is being addressed for what it is, a drinking problem meant to drown his sorrows and regrets. He needs to open up to Ruby and Yang more, this event I hope makes him do that more! He's my favorite male character and I want to see him get some development too, same for Team RWBY too! Speaking of which, I am truly proud to see Weiss throw the wine bottles like she had, before burning the Apathy. I feel like you're right, Murder, Weiss of all people understand how damaging alcohol is to someone and in a way... is trying to spare Ruby from seeing Qrow become just like her mother. Again, Qrow, please learn from this!
Spoilers: -Maria's eyes getting slashed. -Maria's gravity combos -The second time we see a faunus which doesn't have a mammal counterpart fighting well -Jaune's older sister -Jaune's older sister is part of LGBT+ -Yang and Weiss's reaction to the little baby -The Grimm Reaper was Qrow's ultimate inspiration -Ruby is actually doing something by asking Maria if she could teach her the ways of the silver eyes.

After watching rwby rewind I discovered that the apathy basically use those 3 fingers to scramble ur insides. Tbh I don't know what I thought would happen but that is a lot worse especially when I think of how close they were to Blake
I could see how those things could potentially be helpful, but since the farmer wasn't paying enough attention he drew a lethal number of the Apathy in.
