I'm not usually a fans of videos. It is an art form, but I prefer the images conjured in my own mind. I'll make an exception for this one. Powerful imagery, powerful words and music.
This is a masterpiece. The subject of that one line in the dirt, and the people who died and are dying today just to be on the right side, breaks my heart.
A kind and gentle soul was Harry .. I had a friend who's long passed .. a man who was in the "movies" with Harry .. they got drunk together a lot .. they shared pain .. he said Harry was as "real" as anyone he'd ever met .. and this guy was a British Paratrooper who dropped behind the Front on D-Day .. so he knew about character .. Harry was about acceptance, forgiveness and love. Good luck, America .. save your Democracy or fade into History. The choice is yours. Feel the love from the North of you .. we are the Tail to Your Dog.
There is a version of this song that Harry included(in English) on one side of a two song recording (45rpm?). It's very different in that he sings with his "crooner" voice and includes background singers etc. It's here on YT, just do a simple search on his name and the title. Its really different. Ciao!
Ry Cooder wrote most of the song with John Hiatt contributing a verse….this song stands with Guthrie’s Deportee’s as a classic and can be relevant in any culture or any era!
In the U K in the 80s there was a TV show where people could send in their video interpretations of "classic" songs, after the first episode,I refused to watch it again,as it contaminated my own visions of the songs, but you have given added meaning to one of many of Ryland`s masterpieces. Well done .
ACROSS THE BORDERLINE (Ry Cooder/John Hiatt/James Dickinson) There's a place where I've been told Every street is paved with gold And it's just across the borderline And when it's time to take your turn Here's one lesson that you must learn You could lose more than you'll ever hope to find When you reach the broken promised land And every dream slips through your hands Then you'll know that it's too late to change your mind 'Cause you've paid the price to come so far Just to wind up where you are And you're still just across the borderline Up and down the Rio Grande A thousand footprints in the sand Reveal a secret no one can define The river flows on like a breath In between our life and death Tell me who's the next to cross the borderline En la triste oscuridad (In the sad darkness) hoy tenemos que cruzar (today we have to cross) este rÃo que nos llama más allá (this river which calls us further away) But hope remains when pride is gone And it keeps you moving on Calling you across the borderline When you reach the broken promised land Every dream slips through your hands And you'll know it's too late to change your mind 'Cause you pay the price to come so far Just to wind up where you are And you're still just across the borderline Now you're still just across the borderline And you're still just across the borderline ACROSS THE limítrofe (Ry Cooder John Hiatt James Dickinson) Há um lugar onde eu tenho dito Cada rua é pavimentada com ouro E é do outro lado da fronteira E quando é hora de tomar a sua vez Aqui está uma lição que você deve aprender Você pode perder mais do que você jamais a esperança de encontrar Quando você chegar à terra prometida quebrado E cada sonho desliza através de suas mãos Então você saberá que é tarde demais para mudar sua mente Porque você pagou o preço para vir até aqui Só para acabar onde você está E você ainda está do outro lado da fronteira subir e descer o Rio Grande A pegadas mil na areia Revelar um segredo que ninguém pode definir O rio corre sobre como um sopro Em entre a nossa vida ea morte Diga-me quem é o próximo a cruzar a fronteira En la triste oscuridad (Na escuridão triste) hoy tenemos that Cruzar (hoje temos de atravessar) este Rao Que nsa llama más allà ¡ (este rio que nos chama mais longe) Mas a esperança permanece quando o orgulho está desaparecido E isso mantém você em movimento Chamá-lo do outro lado da fronteira Quando você chegar à terra prometida quebrado Cada sonho desliza através de suas mãos E você sabe que é tarde demais para mudar de idéia Porque você pagar o preço para vir até aqui Só para acabar onde você está E você ainda está do outro lado da fronteira Agora você ainda está do outro lado da fronteira E você ainda está do outro lado da fronteira
thank you for share your feelings.. you know all americans now their Grandgrand fathers and mothers did just the same. searching for a better future for their children...
I am first generation American, and I agree - this is supposed to be the best country in the world, and people getting mad about immigrants is stupid. Immigrants always make our country greater. Our country is getting worse...
was Trumps father not a immigrant ???? hehe so he is a son of a immigrant. The real And first americans were the Natives... or am i wrong ? do i need to read the history book the opposite way ? Trump is messing with the world now.. it could get dangerous for all. Playing with fire can get out of hand very quick, every fireman can tell this..
There's a place so I've been told, Where every street is paved with gold. And it's just across the borderline. And when it's time to take your turn There is a lesson that you must learn. You could lose more than you ever thought you'd find. And when you reach the broken promise land, And all your dreams slip through your hands And you know it's too late to change your mind. Because you've paid the price to come so far, Just to wind up where you are. And you're still just across the borderline. And when you reach the broken promise land, And all your dreams slip through your hands And you know it's too late to change your mind. Because you've paid the price to come so far, Just to wind up where you are. And you're still just across the borderline. Now up and down the Rio Grande, A thousand footprints in the sand, Reveal a secret no one can define. The river rolls on like a breath, In between our life and death. Tell me who's the next to cross the borderline. And when you reach the broken promise land, And all your dreams slip through your hands, And you know it's too late to change your mind. Because you've paid the price to come so far, Just to wind up where you are. And you're still just across the borderline. And you're still just across the borderline. Somebody Tell me who's the next to across the borderline
@@gerardhaubert8210 We already have "enforceable borders", Europe is weathering a huge population shift due to their perennial negligence of Africa which they once heavily colonized, then left in the lurch. The U.S. is experiencing a similar population shift which was the result of our using economic subterfuge during the cold war to negate Central and South America's development to discourage Soviet hegemony. You could take that same 48 to 50 billion dollars your wall will cost and apply it to economic development of Central America and stop the "caravans", never to see them return. Or, you could build your wall, which will be tunneled under, gone over, drilled through and the tide will just increase. Now....Daniel-sahn, in your infinite wisdom, how do you find the balance? ALSO, yeah, Europe controls its borders with NO walls. NONE. SO, on that score, guess again Grasshopper.
RIP Harry Dean Stanton, my FAVORITE actor. Such a moving tune! Does anyone know what tuning Ry is using for this tune. There are so many overlapping strings it's hard to tell. Is it Drop D, or is it an Open G?
I feel with the Mexicans authorized to cross the border with valid documents! I came to USA as a refugee 2000 and I had all legal papers before I stepped to USA soil! If anyone of Mexicans would have the same,I would gain full respect and give them all support! For illegals I have no mercy! Get a Lawyer and get a papers!
With all respect, you probably didn't read my comment carefully. I stated above, I don't have anything against Mexican in deneral. I pledged for official immigration paperwork to be done so Mexican would n ot be forced to work "under the table" and employers would be forced to pay them according USA standards. Also, I mentioned myself who came into USA from Europe with ALL papers and permission to work right after Social Security card would be issued. I was granted all of that before I even stepped on US soil. I saw the visa applicant lines in front of US Embassy i country I came from. All of them had to have some papers according visa procedure and all of them obeyed the rules. I don't see any reason for Mexican why not do the same. Instead of that, they chose to do a shortcut over the fence and that's the one I'm standing firmly against. Hope you got a better picture!
+John Doe And in all respect, you didn't grow up in central California in the 40's and 50's where we depended on the Braceros to harvest our crops nor (I'm assuming} did you come from a country right on our border. Search here for the song "Deportee." By tightening the borders we made it harder for the migrants we depended on to go home and more dangerous to get back here, so many stayed. I too feel for my many Mexican friends waiting honestly waiting for visas. First before building a bigger fence you need to reform our welfare system. They come because there are jobs no one else will do because many can sit at home and draw a check. The Mexicans take a dangerous journey leaving everything behind in hope of a better life. If there weren't jobs I don't think so many would come. As long as the jobs exist, they will come...and it will become more dangerous for them. That's not the solution.
To be precise…. Acrosse borderline by Ry Cooder, it is a remake of a song by Freddy Fender, which was featured on the motion picture soundtrack for The Border starring Jack Nicholson (1982) Otherwise… Written-By - Jim Dickinson, John Hiatt, Ry Cooder, in the album "Get Rhythm" off Ry Cooder 1987. Backing Vocals - Harry Dean Stanton
I feel so sorry for them. Yet many of them pay coyotes hundreds of dollars to cross them into the land of streets paved with gold. They should use that money and hire a good attorney to fix their visas and obtain green cards.
