Ryan Burch is a surfer and surfboard shaper out of San Diego, California. Ryan has wowed the surf world with radical surfing on self-shaped, alternative yet high-performance surf craft for over a decade. After exploring and testing different options, Ryan decided to keep one thing constant in his board development...the fins. With small refinements over time, Ryan found this specific set of twins and 1+2 asym set fit the mold for the wide spectrum of boards he builds himself.
True Ames is fired up to have worked with Ryan to put the finishing, fine-tuned touches on this collection and make them available to the broader surf community for the first time.
The twin set is a true all-around hybrid style design which harnesses speed and drive without sacrificing responsiveness and maneuverability. The twin offers the full ability to surf rail to rail and execute both tight radius turns in the pocket as well searing carves on a steep wave face. This template bridges the gap between a more upright high-aspect twin and a traditional larger profile keel, and subsequently draws on many of the biggest positive performance aspects from both.
The 1+2 asym set pairs the twin with two, smaller paddle-style fins which perfectly sync to transition from nuggety toe side bottom turns to open and free top turns with just the right amount of hold, and release when necessary.

It’s really cool to see you’re still pushing the boundaries of unique surfing and board building! Haven’t seen ya in a long time since moving to Japan. Congrats on getting married. Miss surfing Encinitas with all the different characters, and especially miss surfing with your pops, RIP.

i had a idea for a gull wing rail that acts like a keel when the board is on edge but is like a finless board when the board is flat on the water....not sure if it would be any better than having 2 small fins on a board with a bit of camber so they can lift out of the water

Honestly, the boards don't look pretty, they don't inspire me. Although I did see a Derek Disney 'new fish of sorts' at OB-SD, and that looked interesting,… angular rail, nice outline.

To each their own, but his boards + fin theories work. Based off his knowledge passed along from generations of shapers. Disney learned a lot from Burch

Like his understanding of fins, hydro-dynamics and shaping. If he could simply stop talking like a valley girl, it would be much easier to listen to what he has to say. It's f&*king irritating.
