Ryan Coogler had a bad stuttering problem growing up, he worked hard to overcome it and it's still a work in progress. The fact that he is comfortable enough now to do interviews is a win for him.
Tituba I could tell he had an issue with his speech. Do you have anymore information about him growing up with a stuttering problem? I would love to share it with my little cousin who is in schol and getting teased.
JG J if you can’t find anything on his struggles with speech as an adolescent...Show him Oprah’s masterclass with maya angelou..Maya Angelou was selectively mute for about 6 years as an child and then became a professor, poet, actor, entertainer and etc. and has touched many lives including mines being that I struggled with social anxiety
All I know is he is amazing and whether or not he overcame a stuttering problem just proves how strong he is and how his drive never stops him from living his passion and truth. We can all learn from that on such a high and beautiful level. Stay blessed guys 🙏
Being a black american from NY... My soul broke when he said that African's still welcome us with open arms but we are apart of the "Lost" tribe. SHEESH. That was deep.
Young black men, don't let our slang give them reasons to hold us back! This man just did a $500+ million dollar movie(& counting) and he speaks like he's straight from the block! Keep that in mind! Intelligence & drive can NOT be denied!
How can you watch this interview and not want this guy to catch mad W's for the rest of his career? Nothing but greatness is in the man's future. Lord I pray that you protect mr. Coogler from dangers both seen and unseen
Anon Botman That is the truth!!! FACTS! Some people have become so dependent upon the white man God that they ignore that they could have been embracing a real gigantic landmass as home and not having to wait for a movie that is sponsored by an interesting company to give people a picture of an imaginary landmass that is based off the real one.
Something about seeing someone that not only looks like you but talks and has the mannerisms of you as well and is this successful. Shits hella inspiring
Give him any beautiful script and it’s an immediate Oscar I’m pretty sure. He’s one of the few people I’ve ever seen just speak from his heart and be himself. Dudes gonna kill everything
He definitely should be in the running!(Black Panther spoiler):So many people think that Killmonger defeated Tchalla at the waterfall battle! That shows how sophisticated his directing is!
I am Nigerian decent, and I have always believed the African culture is dormant in African Americans, and curiosity will bring it out. They are from us, they are our people. They are the children of Africa period. African Americans and Africans hopefully in this generation will bridge the gap, Africans can teach the culture, and embrace our brothers and sisters. Black people all over have to become 1 to fight all the injustice around us. This man's experience in South African made me tear up, he saw himself in those South Africans because that is who he is African American. Key word African.
I think Afrikans can teach Afrikan Americans about their culture, and Afrikan Americans can teach Afrikans about Economic ideals and practices... anyway you look at it, there's an opportunity for growth between the Diaspora
eshesimua I can agree with you. But you guys got some stuff going on over there you need to get situated first. Maybe a slow trickle of migration back. Maybe you can whip the men into shape, then maybe than can have spine to put these women into place. I can dig it
I watched the whole thing. Ryan Coogler is a very compelling man to listen to. The connections he made from Africa got me mad emotional, I was smiling. I hope his blessings stay coming his way. What an intelligent, handsome man.
Now I understand myself culturally even more. That's beautiful. They really tried to take our essence from us. Because they don't posess it. They envy it. Of course they know what all these things mean. They knew gathering together was a sign of wealth and health, knew the meaning of watermelon. It is said the devil is in the details. Yeah, the devil is there.
Wow, his explanations of the similarities between Blacks and Africans with the stuff that we held on to through the years is amazing. It is blowing my mind with the watermelon, chillin outside the house, etc. Awesome.
+NicKingPapiChulo No we cannot because we do not know our country of origin. I am assuming that you are Hispanic, hence Papi Chulo...Africa is a continent not a country and until we do an Ancestry test to tell us specifically where we come from in Africa then We Are Black. Are You Black, if you are you should know there. There are certain things among-est Black Folk that is Known but goes without saying. So We Black, I am of African decent (Congo, Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana)
I have all the more respect for Ryan after this. His transparency and vulnerability takes his creativity to the next level. He is so authentic to the bay and his blackness. I love it
John Doe Michael started his acting career as a child. He's been around much longer that Fruitvale...I remember seeing on the soap opera. Love his growth.
Hearing him speak on the similarities between African American and African culture and how they embraced him was amazing to hear. As African Americans we feel so much of a disconnect from Africa so hearing that was something special.
DonThaDude We aren’t minorities like they like to portray. There’s melanated people all over the world. People that are indigenous to the areas that they live in.
Thanks for answering that person. I am too exhausted to explain these simple concepts to confused black people. Salute to Ryan Coogler for being proud of his African heritage that we can see all over his skin, hair and face.
Haya Glamazon Lol, with that perspective, that means that nobody in America is American and every one is a product of where their ancestors came from; which turns out to be Africa. So, Coogler from Africa, Trump from Africa, Hillary from Africa, Rosenberg from Africa. Lol get outta here.
Ryan is a really cool guy. He's not putting on a front, he's not pompous or trying to change his vernacular to sound different for a certain group. He's on point. I hope that dude continues to get his vision out. This is unhinged black excellence.
To all my African American brothers and sister, i love you all from the bottom of my heart. Please never think that we africans dont love you because we do. Kissess to you all king and queens. Love you. From Ghana west African.
Kevin Zhang alot refute that because those individuals look at those customs the sameway American whites do. They look down on it. It's consider a joke/fodder. They see us the same way whites do. Their pride is based on someone elses viewpoint. Which is a shame. Not everyone can handle being black.
Loved the interview! The comparisons Ryan was making about Africans and African Americans are so real! Some things are just in your DNA! I notice this all the time! I'm African and I can totally relate to some of the things I see here with African Americans, like the black moms or parents thing. Too many similarities! We are ONE PEOPLE! Just separated by distance.
As time goes on, more Africans and African Americans are going to be more united more than ever. This might spawn a cross continental black/African renaissance between Africans, African Americans, Afro-Europeans, Afro-Caribbeans, and Afro-Latinos. Let's not forget our black brothers and sisters in Asia.
I love when successful black people still speak in our vernacular. It's one of the many things that makes us us. I'm afraid that it will one day become lost.
He is so real. I don't know why I imagined Ryan to be a (no offense) geeky nerdy dude. Nothing is wrong with nerdy dudes (I love y'all too) but I love how he is relatable. This is so dope for the culture! I caaaannnnt wait to use Black Panther!!!!!
Ryan looks so South African. No wonder he fit in. Damn, when he said Kenya's the first place he's ever been to that's not photographable and when he said we sometimes call African Americans the lost tribe, it broke my heart. Obviously not all Africans are that well-receiving of African Americans, but I'm glad that he had a positive experience when he came to South Africa and Kenya. Anyway, I'm just so proud of how this movie is uniting Africans and African Americans. Like without collaboration it would not have been possible and that says so much. This is one of the most important movies of the decade. As Lupita said, "It's Black history."
iammilorex I think its something that was planted... Not only him but almost all Africans in America... I saw one standup comedy where they were bitter saying the African sold African American to slavery.. Its time they listen to part or version of our story... Were were ambushed, they came with a plan.. Some actually collaborated, but also the 🔫 they used made em superior and powerful at the moment
trenelled Please visit Africa! I'm Kenyan and been fortunate enough to have travelled outside the continent. As a continent and for Kenya, it's not a lie that we have our fair share of problems but one thing that makes me always look forward to boarding that flight out of "proper functioning societies" in Europe or Asia and heading back home is that we have an almost tangible drive to see ourselves come up from under the rubble that we were left in or created for ourselves. There's an infectious optimism to be found in a people working so hard to make a life for themselves that makes you look beyond current problems to what our future WILL be. But by 6pm (if not stuck in traffic) a lot of these people will be sitting somewhere drinking a cup of tea or a cocktail looking out to the most beautiful sunset you will ever experience. #WakandaVibes.
I love the fact that he mentions how they did Haiti, Ethiopia, this kingdom in South Africa. How they were starved out. Europeans wanted to control all.
I did the ancestry dna test last year and I can't even describe the feeling when I got my results back. I think everyone should do it. Early on in the Black Panther movie Benin was mentioned and I was giddy lol because Benin/Togo made up a significant percentage on my results...as did Native American. I felt proud. A different proud then I've felt before because I have some idea of where I come from.
Loved the interview... Ryan is a genius. Him talking about Africa was so good and deep. I will def eat more watermelon. He’s so talented, woke, and real. Go Ryan! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
bailey1950 I'm reading the comments just to see someone say this. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Glad he can get the thoughts on screen clearly. I just didn't expect this lol
As a dude from the bay, hearing Ryan talk is like music to my ears. So many bayisms\little bits of lingo that would only resonate if you are from here. Shout out to him man! Putting the bay on the map!
38:20 "Why would you not wanna eat what's so important to you and your culture? How could someone tell you not to do that?" I almost had an emotional reaction to that, man
Fascinating interview. I was waiting for something like this, to get a chance to hear from Coogler for a longer period of time. Dude's a genius and he's got a great career ahead of him. And that Oakload accent is dope.
The key to his winning is that he had a passion and love for something. He knew what he wanted and he just went tunnel vision. No excuses but if u dont have a passion for anything its are to live ya Best life lost .
I'm crying. Thanks Ryan. I felt the same when I visited the continent for the first time. I went to Ghana (and turned 20 years old while I was there) and was forever changed. The pride I have in myself cannot EVER be broken. The connections between the continental African traditions and us "diaspora Africans" is obvious when you travel.
Love that statement about watermelon, it's only looked at negatively here in the U.S. because it was one of the first things African Americans could sell as freed slaves. Good point
I got goosebumps when he gave examples showing how though African Americans are far removed from Africa, we still have cultural practices ingrained in us passed down from our ancestors. My coworker was like "why are you smiling," I just said "you wouldn't understand." That was powerful! Here are more cultural similarities: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6wCGO6kCnGA.html
He is quickly becoming my favorite person. The movie was amazing! I’m so glad he’s not white washed. To hear him explain & compare Black people and African experiences is so amazing!!
Wow! This interview was nothing short of amazing! My father is from Ghana and I’ve never been but I’ve always wanted to go. Ryan is making me wanna book that flight for tomorrow!! 💖✊🏿
I'm on Wakanda mode all week before the release of Wakanda forever, watching all the videos i can from back then till this week... Chadwick is no longer with us anymore but Ryan Coogler and the whole team are just beautiful and keeping the legacy alive. I feel less sad. And he's right, the similarities between Africans and people from African descent (in the US, in the Caribbeans, in Europe ..) are still strong! They can be found in our hair and the creativity to style it, the love for music, the spirituality, the love of laughing, sucking teeth😅, the capacity to overcome everything and yet spread real joy, the respect for elders, the sense and love of family and community..and above all the love of God, whatever name we call him. To me that's being African! I'm from Congo and I felt everything Ryan said in this interview. 🙏🏾
The way he talked about Africa really makes me want to go and see it for myself. To see the beautiful countries, the culture and the people...to see the cradle of humanity. Sounds like a wonderful adventure!
Uzo Ofodire OMG! Good looking out! I know this and I've called people out for the same mistake. I guess that's what I get for commenting during a meeting.
Couldnt do much but grin watching this interview!! What an accomplishment it would be to meet or even work with such an intelligent young black man! #severelymotivated 🇭🇹
This was by far one of the best and most enlightening interviews I’ve had the pleasure of watching. What he was saying about Africa and the relation between Africans & African-Americans reminded me of the song ‘Momma’ by Kendrick Lamar in particular a line he spits in the third verse: “Kendrick, you do know my language / you just forgot because of what public schools had painted” coming from the perspective of a young African boy. In fact, Ryan Coogler is definitely the Kendrick Lamar of the film world. He’s from California, extremely humble, and hasn’t made a misstep yet; the dude’s 3/3. I see only great things in his future and is slowly becoming one of my favorite directors.
3 yrs later...Great Interview...Mr. Coogler...seems like he has such a special spirit about him! I wish him all the success that is due him...this interview was really joyful!
I literally cant stop binge watching videos of Ryan. Hes so different from everyone Ive ever heard speak in Hollywood. So humble, intelligent, honest and such a beautiful and inspring person. He deserves all the success in the world
This is the first time I've heard him speak. I'm so proud of this brother. He's very inspiring to me as an up-and-coming filmmaker. I'm happy he's still so humble and he hasn't lost his bay area vibes. I watch the film today. #supportblackpanther
As a young Mosotho Woman, listening to you talk about My country (The Kingdom in the Sky, Lesotho) the way you did Ryan changed something in me, thank you so much for Black Panther it has really affected our way of thinking as Africans. #TearsofJoy #SignedFromLesotho
😢That precious moment of realisation when he made connection between the African ritual and his family cook out back in the States.🤧Even if you were separated from us, nothing can erase the African bond we have.🤞🏾
As a West African (Ghana) raised in the United States. I’ve always noticed the similarities (both good and bad). It’s a DNA thing. Everything about African American is African. The rhythm, the facial expressions, the communal/Family approach to things. And it’s like AA is a whole new tribe. I urge those who haven’t been to Africa before to go. Especially West Africa, and you will come back with a new outlook and perspective on yourself and how you view things. Ryan Coogler, I salute you sir! #W. Africa #Ghana 🇬🇭 #Akan #Ashanti
Agree 100000% with these sentiments. Africans Americans are just another tribe / ethnic group, except we’re outside of the continent. Can’t wait to visit Ghana one day!! 🇬🇭
I am so proud and especially honored to hear progress...Coogler progress. "There is no way that whatever you have been through ...could break that (African culture of community and gathering)." WORD
I... just blown away and near tears that he would put so much thought into the fight styles for the women of Wakanda. They are essential and deadly it's amazing! This will set an important standard for movies beyond this Universe. So incredibly grateful. Thank you.
Bruh... when he talks about going to Gugulethu and just experiencing SA vibe like that. Its crazy though cos I as a South African and a Xhosa/Tswana person have sometimes taken my own culture for granted simply because i live it ... you know. Its a part of life in general and to hear someone thats on the outside looking in appreciating it like that just makes me happy and proud.
