You need to make the entire meet like one massive team event. The shot put is a part of that event and athletes score points towards the total score. And each major city gets a team and can trade players. Have a draft. Etc.. London, New York, Zurich, Rome, Oslo, etc... Outside of the blue ribbon events, it's hard for any individual event to get a higher stance (shot put) otherwise.
Sorry Ryan, and I like the shot (and do it myself), but audiences are not that interested in watching it. It’s been catered to in this way since the 70s because incorporating it within the track programme is the best way of doing it. What shouldn’t be happening is what the BBC does in cutting back to the studio every 20 minutes for 10 minutes of waffle whilst the shot is going on. That could definitely be changed and Discovery+ did a good job of that during the Olympics.
