Players who lack already strong offensive skills tend to be ignored by the media. Thanks for giving this NBA prospect attention. As usual, I learn more about the game through your analysis - Thanks!
I like this kid, he's a f...ing defensive machine. He not only defends his man, steals balls and blocks, but he is able to help all his teammates defensively. He's always aware of where the ball is and has great mobility all over the place. Offensively he is weaker, especially his three-point shooting where he is very insecure. But he attacks the rim with speed and forcefulness. I see him in the top-15 as I think he is a very interesting player for any team that wants to improve its defense.
Dunn is the best defender of the draft and every NBA team is going to love him on that end of the floor. He's #18 on my big board right now, largely because I want to see him improve his three (his misses are mostly wide open looks) and become more aggressive as a whole. I also think he has real potential attacking the rim, both as a scorer and as a rebounder, but it needs to be on a more consistent basis.
I'll have videos on both guys. I'll probably touch on how they compare to other bigs in them, but if not, then I'll touch on it in my mock draft closer to the summer. @@rep227
Go to UVA and have seen him play many times. This analysis is on point. I hope his assertiveness goes up once conference play gets going because our offense is very stagnant if he isnt attacking. Definitely needs to grow his offense if he wants a consistent roster spot at the next level. Like you said he has flashes but they needs to be on display consistently in EVERY game he plays. Im a believer
Appreciate you! Yeah, I'm hoping Dunn does more offensively as the year goes on too. Like I mentioned in the video, it's ultimately tough to tell from the outside whether UVA wants him to be so tentative or if it's entirely on him. My educated guess is that it's a mix of both, with Virginia wanting his role to be simple but Dunn also not trusting his offensive tools that much yet (to be fair, it's easy to lose some confidence when you're shooting 19% from deep). I'm a big believer too, though.
Appreciate it! Yeah, I generally agree. You can be an incredible defender, but in today's NBA, you have to do more than that to get consistent minutes. Ideally, it's being able to shoot and, at bare minimum, making quick and mature decisions. I think Dunn is a smart player, so I trust that he'll get there but it might take some time if his shot doesn't start falling. In college, Dunn can offset this with his cutting and athleticism - all good skills, no doubt - but he's only made one three since the start of December, which really cannot happen in the NBA.
Miami's pick should fall right after the lottery and this would be a nice landing spot for Ryan Dunn. I think there'd be no pressure on him to play in (at least) his first season, although his defense would probably get him on the court here and there, and the Heat can develop his offense in their G League system.
Dunn, but I like Risacher's defensive outlook too. I think Dunn is stronger, more agile, more athletic, and just has incredible awareness really. He can destroy a team's possession by himself, whereas Risacher can get stops and he's versatile (though not as much as Dunn, who you can probably unleash 1-4 in the NBA down the line) but not as dominant.
Would be cool to see him develop in Miami. I think a big question with Dunn is whether he'll ultimately be more of a big or a wing. I'm starting to warm to the idea of him playing as more of a big in the NBA.
I wonder how much of Virginia sorry offense didn’t allow him to grow too much on that aspect. Probably might only take him a year or so to get a decent shot.
I think his offense is slightly better than what he could show at UVA - no one had a good season in that end there - but he’s still a non-scorer for every intent right now in the NBA
The main thing with this is that the Raptors' 2024 pick is top 6 protected. That might be too high for Dunn, who I see more as a late lottery prospect. However... Two years ago, I would've said Dunn was right down the Raptors' alley but the team is seemingly moving on from the "Project 6'9'" way of targeting rangy wings with defensive ability. The goal now is to build around Scottie long term, but I think Dunn would fit this too, particularly with his point of attack defense. I think Scottie is much better cleaning up and helping from the backline. Theoretically, there would be enough firepower on the floor with Barnes' improved shooting, Immanuel Quickley, and RJ Barrett. The team would really have to believe in Dunn to draft him top 6, though.
@@FloorandCeiling 💯 I agree with you, top 6 might be too high, although, raps still have 3 picks this year and have a lot of flexibility with contracts. It really depends how high they are on him, I would definitely take other players if it came down to the top 6 pick, but whoever Masai drafts, I won’t even doubt! Great analysis btw!
Dunn and Bam in the frontcourt would be incredibly hard for teams to score on. I also think the Heat do a good job developing players offensively (Duncan Robinson, Caleb Martin, Orlando Robinson, Nikola Jovic, Omer Yurtseven...), so that would benefit Dunn.
He's a great defensive prospect, probably in the top 3 since I started evaluating the draft. There definitely needs to be offensive improvement, but I do think it's worth noting that he played for a Virginia team which does not really accentuate anyone's scoring. If I was involved in Dunn's draft process, I'd make sure that he can prove to NBA decision makers in empty gyms that he can make spot-up/catch & shoot threes, and make sure they walk away knowing how good of an athlete he is too.
@@FloorandCeiling These are good points. If Dunn can convince he is at least solid on offence then he is a top 20 guy. If not he probably falls to 21 to 31
@@LouBang718 Plus, he was raised on Long Island, played at LuHi in Brookville for a bit, and he's repped by CAA (which has very close ties to the Knicks).
@@FloorandCeiling WOW! That's almost an automatic. Even if they have to trade up. They have plenty of picks , Unless they're trying to land a "super star". I think they should just run it back. I think this team is a legit title contender when healthy.Hopefully Thibbs dishes out the minutes a little more efficiently ⬅️😂.
If my NYK’s were to draft this kid, and he plays behind OG, and with OG at times, I can see him developing properly and successfully. Deandre Hunter, also from UVA was a better shooter, but just as disruptive on defense. Hunters offense in the league has been solid, but not spectacular and if Dunn can replicate what Hunter has accomplished to date, he will be a good pick with one of our 1st rd picks.
I think New York would be a cool landing spot for Ryan Dunn. It's interesting that you touched on Hunter because I think UVA teaches defense really well, but it also doesn't get the most out of players' offense. I think Dunn might be able to do more than what he's been able to show in college.
Dunn is the best defender in this draft and in most drafts. He’s an incredible defensive prospect, probably the best I’ve ever evaluated, but he needs to be able to do at least one thing on decent volume offensively. That’s Ryan’s biggest challenge.
He could be a good fit on the Thunder. They set a lot of screens with their offensive, keep the ball moving, and also have multiple guys with scoring gravity to allow someone with Dunn's athleticism to get easy points off of smart cuts to the basket. It seems like his scoring woes are a skill/craft issue, not a basketball IQ problem. In fact, he seems very intelligent on the court. Chip Engelland is the Thunder's shooting coach, and they have gone from the bottom of the league in three point shooting to near the top in a couple of years so maybe he can help Dunn fix his shot too. They need someone who can play the 4, even if he is currently a little small, and he and Chet would be an insanely good defensive frontcourt. Coach Daigneault prioritizes defense first, so I think he would get playing time as a rookie at a position of need right from the start.
Thanks for watching! It'd be really interesting to see Dunn on the Thunder. He'd definitely fit right in with all the mismatchy screening stuff that they do and they have lots of facilitators with Shai, Jalen Williams, Giddey, etc. I also agree that Dunn's offensive problems aren't IQ-related. I feel like they're more about his approach than anything. I commented below that a Dunn/Wembanyama frontcourt for the Spurs would be ridiculous on defense and the same applies for Dunn/Chet, except that I think OKC already has enough offensive tools to offset Dunn's lack of production there. The thing I wonder about is whether drafting Dunn would be a deviation from the Thunder's current philosophy of drafting prospects who could potentially dribble/pass/shoot.
@@FloorandCeiling They are higher on the dribble/pass part than the shooting, as they have drafted some poor shooters recently, some of whom have improved in that area--Dieng, Giddey, and Jaylin Williams being three examples of poor shooters when they were drafted (Giddey and Dieng still have a long way to go). For me, if you can find someone elite on one side of the ball at the end of the lottery or later, you take them and bet on them improving their weaknesses. And Dunn definitely looks like an elite defensive player.
@@FloorandCeilingSam Presti specifically said he like “2 way playmakers”, and I think even though Dunn isn’t the best shooter, I seem him fitting that mode.
Few NBA teams would have as much defensive firepower on the wings as the Blazers then with Thybulle, Toumani Camara, and Ryan Dunn. Still, I wonder if Portland might target more of a offensive-minded player from an unconventional background as has been the case recently (Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe straight out of HS, Scoot Henderson out of the G League...). Maybe a Ron Holland or Matas Buzelis to add size on the wing, but also ball skills.
@@FloorandCeiling those instincts almost can’t be taught tho, with NBA training and learning discipline he could develop into a Paolo type player maybe not to that extreme but you never know in the NBA🤷🏽♂️definitely would be a steal for any team seems like a smart kid too💯
I think Toronto can get a better prospect at center than Yves Missi down the line. My dream scenario is the Raptors landing Khaman Maluach in the 2025 draft, although that would mean a big rebuild for at least another season. He's a five-star 7-foot-2 South Sudanese big out of the NBA Academy in Africa who had FIBA World Cup experience at 16 y/o and will most likely be at the Olympics.
Truly curious to see what the Bulls do from now until the end of the season. They have a lot of tradeable pieces with Lavine, DeRozan, Caruso, Lonzo, even Patrick Williams to an extent… but I’m not totally sure they’re gonna go for a rebuild right now. Hard to predict what they’ll do in this draft until we get closer to the end of the year and see what Chicago’s roster makeup looks like.
A 4-5 frontcourt pairing with Ryan Dunn and Victor Wembanyama would pretty much put a lid on the rim. Still, I'm not sure the Spurs would prioritize Dunn despite his defensive skill simply because he's so far behind offensively - and the Spurs also need help there. Maybe not as much with shooting (although guys like Tre Jones and Jeremy Sochan aren't great here + Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell can be inconsistent), but definitely with playmaking and facilitating. That's why I feel like the Spurs will likely target a point guard with their high draft pick this season.
@@FloorandCeilingi could honestly see my Spurs drafting Ryan Dunn with the Raptors pick if it conveys this year, I could imagine a lineup of Nikola Topic Devin Vassell Jeremy Sochan Ryan Dunn Victor Wembanyama The defensive versatility of Jeremy Ryan and Victor would be absolutely insane. Through the entirety of Tim Duncan era (yes I'm a diehard Spurs fan) Our best offense started with our best Defense.
@@FloorandCeiling I see the Knicks trading one or both of those picks for rotational help they were a game away from a ECF appearance or selecting a big as an insurance policy for Mitchell Robinson whom can’t seem to stay healthy and shooting to give Brunson more space to operate. Kyshawn George and Yves Missi. But Ryan Dunn is definitely in the conversation not sure he’d get minutes they have OG and Hart and they play high minutes as well as Bojan and Randle returning.
Thanks for watching! I don't think Dunn gambles to a worrying extent, though. For me, it's more so that he's supremely confident in his ability to make a play. He's usually very good about picking his spots, but when someone is such a high volume defensive player, there are times when those things happen.
