I think this is one of my first comments ever, I've been taught by Rani Yahya, Jeremy Williams was my best friend, I have countless friends who are all BB, triangles are my bread and butter, but I have NEVER EVER seen a top level JJ practitioner teach or explain technique as well as Ryan! Ryan im pretty sure you won't see this but hats off to you, it is a pleasure watching you break down the art!

Thank you so much. I have always been getting the angle and squeezing my knees together. I did not know the squeeze was only if you don't have the angle. I was wondering why I always burned out before finishing my opponents in the triangle.

Never thought about the triangle this way..it looks very efficient. I have a lot of trouble finishing the triangle. Usually I have to apply a lot of pressure and wait for a long time before the tap comes.. most of the time my legs burn out. Will try this method definitely...awesome explaination!!

@RickMerchantttt
@RickMerchantttt 12 лет назад
@RickMerchantttt What Ryan teaches here is ESSENTIAL to every and all triangles. I forget when I stumbled upon this gold nugget, but since then, if I can lock a fully secured triangle, it's a guaranteed finish within ten seconds. He has improved my game exponentially throughout the numerous videos I've watched. I know he won't read this, but I want to thank Ryan for his time and effort, because this stuff really does make a big difference.
@Joe22c

Triangles are certainly my favourite submission, but there's this one wrestler dude I know with such a strong neck. He's the only person I can get in a triangle, but not finish. And it had always perplexed me. I shall give this a go next time I get.
@pvtryan017
@pvtryan017 12 лет назад
If you're only underhooking the arm you should switch to the leg, it will tighten it up. Also, if you can get all the way under the body you shouldn't even need to squeeze at all. If you can only get under the arm, trying using your free hand to pull the head down while squeezing, sometimes it takes a little extra pressure.

@scarce3370 that is a serious choke man, and with the choker on the side like that it's gonna be fairly difficult to pick him up if he does nothing. You would have to step your leg forward to stand and a skilled guy would grab your leg with his free hands and lock it to his body. There would be no standing after that.

this is what I needed!! yeah finaly. Because I'm tall but quite light (166 lbs) and I have to deal with smaller guys. I always get the triangle because my legs are long but few times finish my opponent, because they are that long that I don't put enough pressure just locking it nor pulling his head down

@omgr6

im having trouble understanding this concept,the triangle that im doing which is staying square and squeezing the knees together has different success depending on the person.how does this actually work in terms of applying pressure once the triangle is locked.i do a shadow triangle and squeeze my knees together i see the gap get smaller,but with the press and curl method i dont understand how the gap gets smaller because it doesnt when i shadow triangle...is the pressure in the kick and lockup

I train at a gym with bigger guys and until saw this i could never finish a triangle on those guys 50 plus pounds heavier than me. But I'll tell you what gettin perpendicular gets it done and doesn't allow them to crush you. Ryan Hall my new BJJ idol.

@@dragosristici Well this was a blast from the past! I remember this video very well. I last competed perhaps 4 years ago and took gold in the gi and no-gi divisions with all of my finishes by triangle choke. This video made me think about triangle chokes differently and absolutely changed my game, it was a huge improvement. I stopped training during covid, but am planning to start back up as a hobby.

@RickMerchantttt

My very first competition, I beat the first guy I was up against by triangle choke. but I was using small, weak, sissy muscles. It took two attempts, as he stacked and postured out of my first triangle, and a solid thirty-forty seconds of actually applying the choke to get him to submit. By the time my second, and last match was on, I was still weak and gassed from the previous, that I was unable to do anything effective to put me on the board. I didn't submit, but I lost on points.

I find using the "stomp" muscles here tends to push the guy away, making him start to lay down. Now, I can finish from mount but I'm wondering how to keep from pushing my partner back with this style. I find being able to grip behind the head helps but sometimes you can't do that because of posturing and having to grab the leg

i've been doing triangles like this since i started training. i do one thing different though. i hook the leg(as he showed) and reach as deep as i possibly can,then i use both hands to pull on the head. you end up having the leg hooked as you pull on the head. very,very uncomfortable.

I totally agree Judoka. And how many black belts aren't "one-trick ponies" by that definition? Roger Gracie mounts EVERYBODY, Marcelo Gracia takes EVERYONE'S back. Sure Marcelo has guillotine finishes but he only guillotines ppl with great half- guards and guard recovery. Ryan just beat Jeff Glover by taking his back during a scramble in he was on top. Watch Ryan hall v. David Jacobs he sets the triangle up from the top. So there's some back up for anyone who decides to flame ryan on this video

There's no sprawl. If he rolls finish the triangle on top. His only real defense once its locked is to fall back ala Roger Gracie(ADCC 2005 vs Xande Ribero) or stand up and walk around your head and neither escape is possible once your get the angle. Should you be fast? Yes but that comes from drilling.
