The Tennessee Titans drafted QB Malik Willis in the third round of the NFL Draft. Willis is regarded as one of the best QB prospect of the draft class however current Titans QB Ryan Tannehill was not fond of the new competition. When asked in a presser Tannehill said it’s not his job to mentor Willis. Marcellus Wiley and Emmanuel Acho decide if Tannehill’s comments were out of line.

Of course Tannehill's insecure about his job! He was the reason the Titans lost a home playoff against the Bengals by throwing 3 INT's. He should've just said he's happy to help any of his teammates... Having said that, I think the media are being a little unfair on him as he didn't say he wouldn't help Malik, he just said it wasn't his job. And at the end of the day it's understandable that a qb feels some type of way about a young qb being drafted with the strong possibility that they're going to take your job losing you tens of million of $$$$$$

100% true. If I was a head coach I'd rather my qb coach get the backups ready. I'd also rather have my starting qb focusing on performing his job well and not being distracted with "helping" backups. If tannehill sucks so bad then why would you want him teaching other people anything? This acho guy isn't even consistent in his arguments. I'd also like to throw in that tannehill is worth 50 million dollars. Get on his level acho.
@Sjtbk23
@Sjtbk23 2 года назад
The issue with Wiley's pushback about confidence - Favre and Brady didn't think Rodgers and Jimmy G were better than them. It was more about their teams focusing on the next 15 years instead of the next 5 with them. Tannehill's situation is different. He's only 32, but Willis could take his spot sooner than later and he can likely end up being better than him. So his confidence has to be in question.

Tannehill is one of the HIGHEST PAID "GAME MANAGERS" of all time. Not one person here could EVER show ANY TIME where a FOOTBALL TEAM.... RELIED on Tannehill for their success. TX A&M? This man wasn't even the best WR NOR QB on A&M. Could MIAMI depend on him after drafting (FIRST ROUND) an unexplosive WR and handing him an NFL QB job? And now in TN he's the same person. Be for real.

If you’re a team-first guy, you want your backup to be ready. You understand the value in that. Tannehill is thinking of himself and not his team. He’s headed for Bakersville! That’s right! Y’all can use that.

Tannehill was drafted into a losing franchise with bad coaching. He was a 1st round draft pick who never lived up to expectations. Perhaps because he was in a bad organization and received little help (vs. all the fan/media bashing and pressure he received), perhaps because he was overrated. Either way, he is carrying some feelings about his path coming up. "No one mentored me, so should I care about some new guy?"

I agree. If he was old and on final years like Big Ben then I agree. But that is exactly why he has coaches to develop that player. But he is quite sure that his time is limited once that contract is completed.

Tannehill can’t even come out and say he’s a leader at this point. He told on himself. You a leader you always training the next guy up. What happens week 15 you get injured. You gonna wait till then to mentor and groom.

Tannehill didn’t say he WOULDN’T mentor Willis. He said it isn’t his JOB to mentor Willis. His job is to play well and win games. That’s it. It’s the COACH’S JOB to get Willis ready. Also, Acho said those QBs didn’t say anything about not being a mentor. Who asked them? Tannehill got grilled at a press conference.

I wouldn't want to sit there and learn from Ryan Tannehill. (You see what he does under pressure and in the playoffs.) Tannehill is best off a clip board holder. I'm a Titans Fan saying this. 😎

Titans fan, born and raised. Maybe if you hadn't literally thrown us out of the playoffs in a game we should've won, we wouldn't have even thought about drafting a QB before the 5th round.

The difference between Bruce Smith mentoring Wiley & Wiley mentoring other DEs...is that every Defense has at past 3-4 D-linemen starting the game every single game. At QB only one takes the field in a game. The old saying "if you have 2 QBs getting significant playing time... you have no starting QB"

You see this in alot of fields sadly. Where the vet doesn't want to train the new guy not because he isnt capable but because he knows he has the ability to pass him. I agree but on the other side the HOF Brett Farve said the same thing and he still did it after leaving.

The problem with Tannehill is someone else might turn out to be better than he is and that's probably why he feels it's not his job to mentor him because that person may take his job away from him and he really isn't real good at his job to begin with

Wiley had good point about teaching everything you know.. Tannehill didn't have that All Star mentor & Tannehill isn't a ROCK solid starter. He's been replaced too, but I can see that point... But in this era, you can't really " teach to learn" without offending.

Tannehill is 33 years old with a QB skill set that will keep him a starting quarterback for how many more years? The issue doesn’t have to be confidence at all. The issue can be as simple as no matter how much Tannehill prepares his machine, he understands that his maximum gift was never so far above other QB including some just coming out of school at 23 years of age. Father Time could be his issue! What if Tannehill can see that his starting QB seasons are coming to a end. Like many athletes that have tasted stardom at the highest levels, most of the say how difficult it is to go especially when not going isn’t a option. Tannehill is having an issue with closure! It doesn’t have anything to do with confidence. It’s the inevitable “changing of the guards”. Tannehill maximized his talent, and it got him to a starting QB position in the NFL. But it’s not a lack of confidence for him to understand his talent has peeked and age isn’t helping like it is Brady. Tannehill understands that leadership is about developing other leaders to some degree. But his emotions are in conflict with his logic. The way he see it is the team is asking him to facilitate his own demise. Tannehill has good enough talent not exceptionally great talent. This means that the faster rabbits will catch up to him sooner than others at his position and he is pushing back because otherwise he is excepting his own removal. And that’s not natural for most people to adjust to.
