Ryanair Emergency Landing EI-DWF Boeing 737-800 Landing Gear Problem at London Stansted Airport.
On 2nd August 2012 I was filming Russian Aircraft movements at London Stansted and was looking forward to the IL76 takeoff. However whilst this giant was starting up and taxiing I noticed a Ryanair 737 flying over the airport in an unusual direction. I didn't know it at the time but the aircraft appeared to be experiencing some issues and was holding whilst the professionals and crew tried to rectify the issue.
You'll notice in the slow motion sequence that the front nose gear was down but the main landing gear failed to extend.
Shortly after this there was a Thomson 737 lined up on the runway awaiting takeoff clearance whilst an EasyJet A319 was on approach. The latter became a go-around as the Thomson wasn't cleared to leave. All the while the IL76 was getting ready to go!
As you will appreciate it's very unusual to see so much action, let alone film what's going on, and often the sound and things going on at the time make it even more challenging.
Anyway, the Ryanair did indeed have some problems with the gear, but this video is ONLY POSTED to show the absolute brilliant professionalism of ALL involved, the well oiled machine swung into action and thankfully although lined up the Fire crews were not required as the 737 got 3 green lights and kissed the runway.
To all involved, a great sight to witness and this should serve to encourage anyone of how high safety is regarded within the industry. Oh, and check out the ATR72 chased by a flock of birds!
I hope you enjoyed watching this video, thank you for supporting my aviation videos channel.

People who bash Ryanair in terms of safety are either not in the sector, work for any competitor airline or simply pure ignorance. Almost 2000 fights a day for more than 30 years with no crashes at all, means they aren't doing things that bad.

Another great example of why flying is still the safest form of travel. Professionals on the flight deck, in the cabin, in ATC, fire and rescue and on the ground. Complete co-ordination and a safe outcome for all involved.

Very well caught, and glad you portrayed the events accurately. Witnessed a landing gear emergency of my own at Southend two days prior, with EI-CBK making a return after being unable to retract its landing gear. It all can be quite dramatic, especially as co-pilot of the ATR sounded somewhat nervous, but as was the case in your video, it landed safely on 3 greens, and was followed by the fire vehicles. Many thanks for uploading this footage.

Thank you very much Sassi el Hadj I am very grateful for your kind and balanced comment on my video of the Ryanair Emergency landing, especially as you have pointed out, this was not meant to be sensationalist, but did capture a moment in time. You are spot on too with your comment about team work, it all comes in to play so well here.

Thanks, Bananamanuk! A great video with happy ending. I got my hands shaking the last time when the now gone Estonian Air CRJ made an emergency landing with bust main gear. You can see it in my channel main page, if you are interested. Just scroll down to the "Incidents" playlist. The plane can't dump fuel and it therefore circled for an hour. So the news got to media and there were so much people at the airport to see the landing with their own eyes. Thanks for your cool videos!

Hello Conor thanks for this information. For complete reference this was posted on the site Avherald which lists incidents with aircraft. The aircraft in this video is actually EI-DWF (I've double checked full screen on my non-uploaded version, I think I originally posted as DWT in the description as I misread the nose gear letters). It is still interesting to note the above story as the issue sounds a little similar.

Hello 737kc, yes I have been to Cork Airport a few times, and stayed at the Airport Hotel. I actually really like Cork Airport for a few reason - its not massively busy as a passenger, but its modern and professional. Additionally, it offers brilliant views at the end of the runway when they backtrack before takeoff. Unfortunately I've not been to Cork for a few years as I normally travel to Galway but I'd certainly enjoy going back. Summer looks good as the charters are in as well.

Hello Sanaluvern, thank you for your comment on my video of the Ryanair landing. I'm not sure how frequently you witness emergency vehicles chasing aircraft down runways, but at Stansted Airport this is thankfully a very rare event. This video is not to sensationalise emergencies but it highlights the professionalism of every team involved in keeping those of use that fly, safe.

Hello TheDarkraptor123 thank you for watching my video of the 737 emergency landing at Stansted. Sorry for the slow reply; the incident was caused by the undercarriage not fully retracting. Thankfully this issue was solved enabling a safe landing. My video tries to show the professionalism of everyone involved, not least the Ryanair crew that made that aircraft kiss the tarmac on landing. Hope that helps.

Thank you for watching &for your thoughtful comment as well. I had read about EI-CBK (still can't believe I filmed this in St Louis Missouri in TWExpress colours in 1996, that plane has operated for my two fav airlines now!) I try to present the situation accurately for interest and reassurance. As I'm filming I'm obviously a bit worried, there's always that chance that the footage may be needed for other purposes, obviously I never want that and these events, rare as they are, are interesting.

Hello flyspotter19, I'm very grateful for your comment because I think it reiterates my reason for posting the video - you said that watching this 'emergency' makes you feel more relaxed about flying - the successful and professional outcome for all involved is certainly reassuring and I am glad you thought this too.

I have experience one emergency landing with Ryanair at Spain Madrid Barajas, when after take off we had to come back due some kind of problem with the autopilot, although the feeling wasn't that nice as a passenger, its good to know that security in aviation has so high standards. Hi there, the largest aircraft we have operating regularly are the Boeing 747-8 by Global Supply Systems / BA World Cargo and FedEX MD11. Up until a few years ago we also had AirAsia X A340's, MaxJet also operated 4 767s at one time. Sadly the only regular large aircraft now are the cargo carriers, occasional charters or for the one off type event.s

Hello Cam Man I appreciate the clarification surrounding your previous comment. I'm sorry you feel that the title of this video is in any way misleading. This was an emergency landing, other traffic was on hold, full emergency service on standby &you could see during the video what caused this - there was a problem with the gear which was thankfully resolved by a skillful crew. Emergency doesn't mean disaster & thank goodness for that. I hope this answers why I selected the title that I did.

hello planesareawesome, I believe there was a problem with the gear. When you see it flying overhead (where I slowed the video) you'll notice it looks like not all the gear are down. On approach the tower ask to confirm "3 greens" meaning 3 green lights indicating all wheels down.

Hello DaleGaddis Gaddis, the Ryanair 737 had a problem with the landing gear, if you see in the video I tried to zoom in on the belly of the plane as it flew overhead (not easy though!) and not all of the wheels had extended. This issue was rectified and therefore a thankfully safe landing followed. This video was about showing how important safety is taken by everyone. I hope that helps.

There is a website called Crynair, if you haven't seen it you may find it funny. Ryanair is very well known for it's fees &charges as it "unbundled" the ticket costs. Early on it won a lot of praise for this innovation, but in more recent times there has been some criticism. It is not my place here to comment, but aside from all of the charges, fees, buy on board, scratchcards, card fees etc. Ryanair is a safe growing company. It is for us as consumers to decide where we spend our money though
@aviationvideos
@aviationvideos 12 лет назад
Hello Luke thank you. I don't listen to specific frequencies for specific aircraft. I had the radio tuned to the tower; airport frequencies are published on many websites. Obviously there had to be a large amount of editing for this video to make sense and to only include chatter that was relevant to the subject matter. I don't use radio very often in my videos.

Hello SuperAviationWorld perhaps you need to read the title in a little less of a literal way and note the ! at the end of the title to suggest that it's not strictly serious. Additionally, the ATR72 wasn't travelling at 500mph. It was a trick of perception, as the aircraft rotated a flock of birds appeared, and they appeared to follow the aircraft, not something you'd necessarily expect, normally they would disperse because of the noise... anyway, I thank you for watching

As you will note from comments accompanying the video I was at the airport filming many aircraft that afternoon & it just happened that this incident occurred. In answer to your question, yes I did film it in case there was an accident - that is absolutely not a case of being morbid or wishing for distress or anything of the kind. I felt that I was in a position at the time that should something have happened then I had a duty to document it - the footage would have been given over not uploaded.

Hello RugbyMadLee thanks for watching my video; to hear the air traffic control you need to have an air band radio. However there are website's on the internet that stream ATC communications from airports around the world, it can make fascinating listening, especially places like JFK in New York - everything happens so quickly. I hope that helps

Hello Doziinius thank you for watching my video of a Ryanair emergency landing at London Stansted. Ryanair is well known for it's aggressive marketing techniques - the CEO once turned up at an airport in a tank!. The airline is huge & is continually in the news courting controversy as it seeks to increase its profits, & innovate to improve value & yields. The bigger they are the more people pay attention, the more likely that there will be supporters & more critics. Ryanair is a safe airline.

The only people i'd expect to be prepared for an emergency are those in control of the aircraft & those in control of the airport & that was more than demonstrated here. So, no, you're right I wasn't prepared for it at all. The other thing to say is that when you go to an airport &many movements are the same aircraft type, the same airline, it makes filming/photos a bit dull so you don't film everything. I guess because of the IL76 I filmed more than normal. Think was on approach. Thnx again

Indeed so Briandjo389, Ryanair has it's supporters and critics, probably in equal measure, but they operate in a highly regulated environment with a young efficient fleet of aircraft so even those that don't support the airline can be re-assured that it is a safe airline. Overloading would be a serious matter for the regulatory bodies. I suspect Laurejon was not being entirely serious.
