In this session Jerome de Groot will introduce new cutting-edge technologies that are being applied to manuscripts and archives. Genetic sequencing has led to huge shifts in the way that we understand the human. New discoveries of Ancient DNA has introduced us to the Denisovans, and changed the way we think about Neanderthals. Increasingly this new approach is being used to understand the material culture, moving away from archaeological sites to the library and the archive. What can we discover about writing and writing materials by using genetic investigation? What can the DNA of the materials of the library tell us about collections, about curation, and about knowledge itself? And how does this challenge and change the role of the librarian, archivist, and curator?
