The Ryobi P2003, P2004, P2030 String Trimmers are powerful and helpful tools. But they suffer from what I perceive as design flaw that prevents the string from feeding after a few hours of use. This video explains the issue and shows how to fix it for free!

Oh my goodness. I had both these problems with mine, it was driving me nuts having to constantly stop and manually feed the line. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this vid.

Hi. I found a shot of WD40 keeps the line from sticking. This means you don't have to unwind and rewind the line on the spool. Just spray the line while it's wound on the spool.

I found good lubrication of the button with some heavy weight oil does the trick.

Mine stopped working after a year. I thought it might be the spring being worn or something. Thank you for saving me the effort of sourcing snd replacing it lol.

Hope this video helps all of you having the same problem. Sorry for the focus problems still getting used to my GoPro. For safety sake make sure you pull the battery before working on it as you don’t want to trim your fingernails with this. 🤣

This is the exact same problem Im having with my Ryobi line trimmer. Thank you ever so much for the repair and yes, I agree that the factory spools are wound to tight so you have to rewind them. I wish they would offer a bump head option. I like this trimmer for its lite and only requires an 18v battery. Thanks again.

Yep. Worked for me as well. On my machine, the friction was on the sides of the button. What did we do before RU-vid?

Do you have anything for if it keeps feeding? Like my mechanism just keeps spitting out line and then it doesn't get cut so it gets wound up in the motor that turns it

great video. Can you tell me how that casing the spool goes in is held on to the trimmer ? The case spins off the thread as as soon as I start it. I must be missing something

I've used mine 2-3 times it's still barely used. Mine is model P2008. I didn't know about the auto line feed when releasing the trigger. The head just fell off & now it won't screw in all the way. Trying to find RU-vid video help. What kind of design is this???? Maybe a part flew off I can't find

I have one of these trimmers, and a friend bought one as well. I have a lawn mower but he doesn't, so he uses his trimmer much more than I do. He was having to manually adjust the length each time ... not automatically advancing. I discovered that the cheap online trimmer string ... same size

Hey Oak mg - this is BRILLIANT - THANK YOU, my Friend!! That was EXACTLY the problem I was having with my new Ryobi 18 V and your mod fixed the problem instantly!!! I didn't have a Utility Knife handy, but I did have an EXACTO KNIFE, which worked just as good. That would have taken me FOREVER to figure that out! God Bless.

I watched your video and found that mine was missing the little spring on the feed button...no wonder its not working. I'll have to find out if I can order a replacement spring!

Try your local hardware store. The local one not the big box stores. The old time ones should have a good assortment of springs to choose from

I know you posted this 2 years ago but for anyone else who has the same problem, the ideal replacement is the spring from inside a biro pen.

I actually did find a replacement online! I immediately lost it when trying to install it! It’s a tricky little sucker to replace!

Thanks for demonstrating. Good job! I had the second issue that you explain, of spooled line jamming. The line appears to have a backlash on the spool restricting it from unwinding. I had spooled the line myself, so i felt it was properly wound on the spool. Actually I found that a more random or loose wound line will feed properly, but a tight level wound line will backlash. I expect this is a tradeoff of the auto feed design because the line release is actually performed as the reel spins down. Compared to a bump and feed there is less centrifugal pull to keep the line from backlash.

The problem I have with this trimmer is that it keeps letting line out. I have to constantly stop, spool line back in and start trimming again. Very very annoying, especially with a single line trimmer

Thanks for the idea. Is there any alternative to the spool other than the attachment they make for it. I tried the one with 2 blades on it and it cracked the first use. It was also supposed to hold single pieces of line that would double up but never got to try that. Don't buy it. I'm looking for an option to replace this cheap line. Even tried the 080 and it still breaks off. I continuously have to open it up and put the line back through the hole. I'll see if this fix could be my problem but still looking for alternatives

My string was too long and got caught in the mechanism. We tried to pull it out, but the string broke. There must be a piece wound inside. Any ideas how to get inside to remove the caught piece?
