Returned. Again. Pt. 2 of a Snowblower Story
This video is in no way a review of the Ryobi Snowblower or is meant to put down the product. This is simply the story of my experience with the product. In my opinion, Ryobi make a good product. Their battery systems is seems to be top notch and offered at a very competitive price point. I feel Ryobi is struggling with quality control issues during manufacturing and perhaps also poor quality of some of their parts supply. It’s possible that this is a result of their efforts to produce an economical product that is less impactful on the consumers wallets. Overall, when the product worked, it worked very well. No issues with performance or build quality.
I am very happy with Brand and well as the support from the retailer, The Home Depot.

Thank you for making this video (and the previous one) about the Ryobi 40-volt snowblower. It just so happens I was looking at them as an alternative to a small gas snowblower to do our walkways. After seeing your experience, I'm going to stick with a small gas blower! Thanks again.

Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!! I’m happy you were able to find some value in the video. I feel Ryobi makes good tools. Very good tools and distribution via the Home Depot is so convenient. However, sometimes manufacturers, in an effort to stay competitive and get products to market for us users, the quality of design and/or manufacture slips by on a small number of their product range. I feel this was the case with their snowblowers. I’m sure they have made changes and this year’s production run is much better than in previous seasons. For my needs I went with Toro’s 60v snowblower instead. I’m very pleased that I did. It’s a wonderful product. Maybe give it a look. I did a video & review about it. Check it out! Thanks again!!

Thanks for leaving a comment and thanks for the praise on my editing. I work hard to improve each video while trying to come up with new and informative content. I hope Ryobi has improved it manufacturing and quality control since I bought mine a couple winters ago. I’m sure they have. 😊

@@Toolspecs thanks!!! Yes it’s hard to find other RU-vidrs around me. Would love to have others to watch, encourage and support. Tools aren’t really my thing. But, I didn’t really know what “my thing” is! Lol I’ve got a lot of views and comments on my review style video. Maybe I’ll do more.

If you haven't determined what caused your failure, I think I know what it is. I think your battery is overheating. I have a SnowJoe 100V unit (which I don't recommend but not for this reason) and it does exactly the same thing if the battery overheats. It takes a good long while for it to cool down but it does work normally after it has cooled down. The internal BMS throttles the current if the battery temp sensor gets too hot. So it looks like a motor problem because the lights still work, but put any load on it and it shuts off. The Ryobi battery also has a BMS with a temp sensor and it will do the same thing if the battery gets too hot. I have several Ryobi 40V batteries and if they get too hot they start throttling the current. You can tell it is in this state by placing it on the charger. The charger (at least the one I have) has an orange indicator light that indicates the battery is too hot to charge. After it cools down, it charges and works normally. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your comment!!! Unfortunately, I don’t believe an overheated battery was the issue. I had a spare battery, charged and just sitting on the bench. Throw that one in, and same result. Leave the battery out overnight, some thing. No joy. So I don’t feel it was an overheated battery. Great thinking though!! Again, thanks for contributing to the conversation!!

It's not a battery problem. A few years ago someone on RU-vid found the problem, it was in the electronics. This isn't the only Ryobi snowblower with that problem. If you can afford it, get a Toro, the Ryobis have had various problems for years now.
@ImNotMC
@ImNotMC 6 месяцев назад
@@Pro1erYup! The controller inside was getting wet. I don't know how this passed their testing. I saw a similar video and what he did was put silicone around the blower where water could get the controller. I was really hesitant to buy this until I saw that video. When I purchased mine, I sealed every seam around the blower. Time will tell if that worked or if Ryobi fixed the issue which I don't think they did bc I'm still reading comments on their site reporting this problem.

Ryobi has a 5 year warranty on all their 40v outdoor tools. Have you tried contacting Ryobi at all? It'd be nice to find out what the exact problem is.

Thanks for the review. I bought a Snow Joe IOJN18SB. The same thing happened as your Ryobi. Snow Joe replaced it. Then it happened again. There has to be a flaw with the design of the cordless models. Refuse to replace.

Thanks for your comment. I’m sorry you had the same problem with your SnowJoe. They might be using the same control boards as Ryobi. I understand that’s what caused the issues with mine. Back in November I bought the Toro 60v snowblower. I did a video review of they machine. If you haven’t seen it already, check out my channel to find it. I really like it and it’s run flawlessly so far. Thanks again for leaving the comment.

you must buy 2 batteries for this thing and get a long time with it. you do have to push pretty hard but i like it. i just bought it first time in use i got it all done before the battery died. but now i that i have a 2nd battery charged ill just use that one and then i can use it again. Pretty good for a small machine. i have not had a problem with it yet but i will update later on .

Find a dealer .... ! I've given up on the big box stores exactly for those reasons .... They don't know you ..... they have no concern for your trouble. I go to a Toro / Honda dealer ..... If it comes out of the box wrong and it's not a difficult repair.... it's done ... easy ... If I buy something big and there's going to he a major delay , they usually have something to loan me until it's repaired.... They handle the paperwork...! They handle registering the warranties ...! Plus the price differences are either none to negligible.... There's lots to buy at a big box store, a snowblower isn't one of them ! 🤔

I suspect the quality control on the Ryobi snow products needs improvement. I purchased the Ryobi 40v snow shovel kit. While blowing snow for about 10 minutes, it seized up and stopped working. It appears that snow is getting into the gears, melting, then freezing. I had to take the snow shovel inside the house for about 2 hours to let it thaw out before it would work again. Currently in the process of talking to Ryobi about this failure. They want me to exchange it, but if it's a design flaw, I don't want to waste my time on that product. I'm a long time Ryobi fan, but not so much on their snow products.
@GeoSphere

Agreed. Poor design or poor quality control. Personally I don’t own Ryobi products, but that is not a reflection of a poor opinion. I quite like the brand and have recommended the brand to friends. However, their lawn and garden products, are good but suffer from an unusually high failure rate. Or, so it seems. Thanks for leaving a comment!

When you purchase item using Home Depot store credit, you can’t return it even you have proof of receipt
@GeoSphere
@GeoSphere 2 года назад
Hi! Thanks very much for leaving a comment. I did not know that about the Home Depot. The Credit I got was in the form of a gift card. The value is half of the cost of the new Toro snowblower I plan to buy in the late fall of 2022. I’ll have to pay cash for the difference between the gift card and the cost of the Toro. Thanks again for your comment.

@@GeoSphere I just bought one. For some reason the power kept cutting off even though the battery still have 25% in it. I re started it and it worked fine. Any idea if that’s normal or if I should return it. Thanks for the review on the video btw
@GeoSphere
@GeoSphere Год назад
@@wwesam1011 if it continues to do that, then no its not normal and you should return/exchange it. From what I understand, the Ryobi snowblowers, the 18” model suffer from a fault in the motherboard. As in my video, mine ran great without stopping until it just stopped working one day. That was the sign that the motherboard was fried. Mine would not restart. My first ever Ryobi snowblower was the 21” dual battery model. It uses proximity switches in the folding handle bars that would contract in the cold and break contact momentarily and stop the snowblower. But it would usually restart right away. This is the same problem they have with their lawnmowers that have the folding handlebars but due to vibration. I hope this helps and good luck with your machine. Thanks for the comment!
