Woodworkers rejoice with a highly featured planer at an affordable price. The RYOBI AP1305 12-1/2" Thickness Planer will plane up to 12-1/2" wide material and up to 6" thick. The dust extraction works very well and can be quickly changed from left output to right output. The 15A 10,000 RPM motor turns the two rubber driver rollers and the dual blade cutting head.

Feed the boards in on an angle, helps reduce sniping

You can eliminate snipe by building an entry and exit table and using a planer sled. On the exit end of the board, it wants to hang down from it's own weight. That pushes the end up against the cutters, causing them to cut deep. Without an extension table and even with a sled, I found I could eliminate a lot of snipe by feeding the wood at an angel where the tail was elevated slightly. On the outfeed side, I elevated the leading end as the last of the board exited.

I do like this little planer and I have given some thought to adding a second one to my shop as right now I have the Dewalt which has been upgraded to shelix cutting heads. They cost more but they cut so much better and virtually no snipe. They do have issues but all machines do. I believe all fine woodworking must be finished by hand anyways.
@parkerk7018
@parkerk7018 3 года назад
Why would you need a second one when you have a dewalt which is a great unit and you went a step further and upgraded the cutter head which makes it even better

Silly question from Australia......... Can you flip the board on its edge and plane the edges? Example - on a 4x2 can you plane the 2 to 1.5 and then flip the board on its edge and plane the 4 to 3.75? And if so, what is the thinnest board you can flip on the edge? I use a bit of 3 x1/4 inch material and would like to reduce the 3 to something narrower.
@alanhorne5911
@alanhorne5911 2 года назад
gday steve, yes , i have seen people clamp 2 or 3 boards together on the edge and run them through the planer with the clamps on or trim the edge on table saw. good luck.

Is there a MINIMUM board thickness that can be planed? Like can it plane standard fence boards? Also, can you plane something that has paint on it to quickly remove paint instead of having to sand it or would this damage the planer?
@SgtRyansPrivates
@SgtRyansPrivates 2 года назад
I’m no expert but I’d say ya it could
@antcantcook960
@antcantcook960 Год назад
Yes using a series of blades designed to cut down the thickness of wood in 1/16 inch increments , to remove millimeter thin paint, along with the accumulated paint debris, would damage a wood planer. *sigh*

Seems like a decent unit. Always wondered though why the price of these almost doubles when stepping up to a 13” planer. Bigger motor maybe? Just seems kinda bonkers to spend a few hundred bucks more for half an inch more. Disregard the obvious open door for puns there lol.

Excited to start using mine. Bought it for $256 at Direct Tools on Black Friday. Originally $319, but went to $256 with 20% off on Black Friday. Been thinking about getting a thickness planer for a while.

As you pointed out the blade can be shifted ever so slightly to the left or right. When installing shift one to the left and the other to the right. WHEN you get a 'chip' in the blade you can the just shift the blade opposite to the way they were set and you can eliminate the chip marks on your board.

You seem to be cough somewhere between giving a review and giving a tutorial. This makes for a confusing video. Just pick one and go with it - either a tutorial on how to use, or a review of the product.

I immediately subscribed to you channel. (Oh, and a thumbs up, too.) Excellent stuff. I'm off to Home Depot to get one of these.

Bought the planer about 6 months ago, it jammed and the gearbox broke; tried to get a new gearbox and all sites say "no longer available"; basically threw away $400 as I can't get the gear to fix it. Tools break, and a big part of my interest in purchasing a particular one is based on the availability of replacement parts to extend their lives. I bought this model because my last RYOBI AP 12 lasted over 20 years--obviously, RYOBI's follow-thru and support of their products is no longer effective.

I build my own art canvases for my artwork and everything needs to be as closed to perfect as possible, sanding has become a no longer enjoyable task lol. So thank you, This is the best thorough review for this machine. Thank you and you gained another subscriber. Off to the Depot!!!

If it was running constantly I can easily see this planer failing. This is a beginner level planer, not meant for constant and extended use without breaks.
