Ryobi battery not charging? Don't buy a new Ryobi battery just yet. Sometimes the cells may have drained below the charge threshold to prevent damage. Use this method to give the battery enough charge by bypassing the controller.
Common problems: ryobi drill not charging, battery charging light flashes, lithium drill battery not charging, dead drill battery,

Worked like a charm. Thanks for the video. I didn't have a multi-meter handy so I just left the leads on for a couple of minutes and plugged it into the intelliport and it charged right up. This saved me a lot of heart ache because it would take months to get a new battery shipped to me over here in Borneo.

I started my AT hike in 2007 as a LASHer the whole time.. I've had a couple years where I didn't get to hike at all. Now less than 400 miles to go and I haven't skipped a step or yellow blazed at all besides into town..

Hello folks; the “controller“ that he keeps mentioning is actually a “BMS“ which stands for “battery management system” and when it goes below say 12 V (in this case for an 18 V battery pack) it will shut off the power so it cannot be drained down and ruin the battery pack. Lithium does not like to be brought down to zero Volts like a nickel cadmium, lead acid or alkaline battery can be…. This is also referred to as “hitting the knee“ because if you get hit in the back of the knee you’re going to collapse and you’re not gonna be able to go anywhere possibly getting yourself into bigger trouble! ;-)

This worked perfectly. I had to drill out the plastic cover on top of one of holes covering the screws. I reset two batteries with clips, then just tapping the good battery terminals by hand for about 30 sec. They are both useable again. Thank you.

This worked for me, although I only needed about 5 to 10 seconds of charge to get enough voltage in the 'dead' battery. Thanks, I saved $40 and some landfill.

Ahhh I see you used electrical tape to secure the leads to the good battery. Simple and logical - the sort of thing that doesn't always pop into my head. Video worth that little trick alone. Thanks Brent. I've seen other videos that say you only have to connect the 2 batteries for about 10 seconds.

Hello print I saw your long video in this video I just want to make sure when you put those leads on bypassing the circuit board you put the red lead on the positive on the battery lead right. And the negative alligator clip to the negative lead that goes to the battery on the circuit board right through that's the only way it's going to charge back. Was that what l like to you know. Because that's what I've been doing since the 80s which were chargeable batteries. Positive lead on the positive battery Pole negative leave on the negative battery Pole.. thank you take care and stay safe doing this never ending pandemic I just wish getting rid of this would be much easier than charging batteries

Good tip but,..... Bear in mind when doing this, that tool makers don't want you to have a tool/battery for ever, they just want to sell more and more, so this is called "built in obsolescence"!

We have the early light bulb manufacturers to thank for this little but wasteful industry standard. I understand that businesses need profit to stay in business. As well innovation to the industry of electronics has this little trick they pulled to thank, but...There was nothing to stop lightbulb manufacturers bulbs from working for 100 plus years in the early years . A great product for the consumer but not favorable for a company who would much prefer to generate revenue annually equal as to what would have been centential.

Yes, they're saying leaving battery in tool creates a drawl and drops it below voltage level where the charger doesn't recognize it and there for won't charge. That's what i read and plan on doing.

It's never been a problem for me. A basic tool like a drill or a grinder shouldn't draw any current when not in use. I expect it to be a completely open circuit when the trigger is not activated.

I have a 2ah battery and a 5ah battery. Yesterday my 5ah battery gave up but, when I plugged it into the charger, nothing. So took it apart and find that the current voltage across the batteries is 18v. But the charger won't recognise it. I then bought a brand new (no name) 6ah battery. When it arrived it had just two bars showing on it's little built in power meter. Plugging it into the charger gives me the red flashing light. Checking out the new battery, it currently has 18v. My little 2ah battery has 20v but is fully charged. I'm starting to think I have a charger problem.

How to check if the BMS is a dud??
@simonlinser8286
@simonlinser8286 Год назад
is there another cause for it not to charge? i have mine apart and when i check the voltage at the terminals coming out of the batteries to the pcb it has 20v but at the actual tool terminals on top, it has zero. and when i press the bottom to check it only one LED blinks, it won't charge. ive tried balancing it with a different battery. i don't see anything that's burnt on the board i can't find any type of fuse. if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful because i need this 4ah to work again!

What does a red flash light mean on a charger it’s been plugged in for 1 hour and still flashing red. Can it be the battery is no good or the charger is bad.
@brenth7774
@brenth7774 Год назад
I believe this means the battery is not going to work. If the repair tips didn't help, I'd say the battery might be done. You could possibly try contacting ryobi also.
@kittykat999a
@kittykat999a 2 года назад
Why do you have to take the battery apart? Why couldn’t you just jumper to the metal leads on the battery outside?
@paulraymond1804
@paulraymond1804 2 года назад
Because that doesn't bypass the BMS. If that worked, the charger would have worked, too.
@mrjcbuc
@mrjcbuc 2 года назад
so i've gotten a bad battery up to about 13 volts with your method, and when I put it on the charger, it will flash red several times, then green about 6 times, then solid red. I removed and replaced battery on charger 20 times or so and it is still the same. What next?
@brenth7774
@brenth7774 2 года назад
i think in that case it might be the management system board that's on the battery. Might not have a choice but to replace the battery.
@mrjcbuc
@mrjcbuc 2 года назад
So does the msb issue preclude replacing cells, which I understand are about a dollar a piece? I’ve gone thru so many ryobi batteries, and this is a relatively new ryobi brand battery. It seems to be a crapshoot to buy the knockoffs, though. What a racket!
@sean640
@sean640 2 года назад
For some reason the cell pack is at 18.2, But the leads going from the board and the contacts for the tool only read 14. It's something with the board that's not getting the full voltage across. How sad for me wah
@paulraymond1804
@paulraymond1804 2 года назад
That may just be that the dead pack is accepting so much current that it's causing such a high voltage drop. Does the good battery still have bars of charge when you do this?

" I'm not an electrical expert. I know just enough to be dangerous" I predict that truer words have never been spoken. What happened the next 20 or 30 times you used this battery? Did you have to do this each time to recharge it? If that's the case, that does NOT constitute a repair!
@mrhalfstep
@mrhalfstep 2 года назад
@@ScoreboardTV Most portable tool companies do the same thing with their chargers. Voltage low - don't charge. Each battery pack has its own Battery Management System (BMS). The BMS is supposed to, among other things, PREVENT the battery from going so low that it can't be recharged. The BMS may do its job by shutting the tool down at the proper time, BUT if there is a bad cell in the battery, (that's where an actual repair would be needed, ie, replace the bad cell) that bad cell, if you don't immediately recharge, would continue to drain the battery to such a low voltage that the charger won't recognize it when you finally get around to charging it. A second scenario would be a BMS that was malfunctioning and just letting the battery run down too low in the tool to be detected by the charger. That would also require an actual "repair", ie, replace the BMS. In both circumstances, you can make the battery work by taking it apart and zapping it, but it isn't "repaired". I hope this helps you understand why I questioned whether this was an actual repair or a "pain in the ass" workaround. In this case it seems to have been a one off malfunction that got straightened out by this technique. I think for a fair number of times this will be a workaround rather than a repair.
@brenth7774

I was able to get more use out of it multiple times but it did have the same issue again, it's sitting on a shelf and I don't remember how long that's been. it might be enough to get someone else by if they can't afford a new battery right away.
