Every once in a while my Ryobi 18V battery won't charge and throw the charger into a fault cycle. This is troublesome, and many will suspect a faulty batter or charger. Do not despair, the solution is simple.
My batteries spent a lot of time in my work truck and on the job site, they get dirty, wet, and get used frequently. The battery connection, especially with the older batteries with the waffle/crosshatch pattern on the contacts, collect dirt and grime easily.
A little WD-40, or other cleaning agent, cleans these contacts and after placing the batter back on the charger, it begins to charge immediately! Simple fix! Check it out!

Omg my 18v has been in the battery recycle pile for YEARS. I just put it on the charger and it went red, quick flashing green and then click…back to red so it won’t charge. I then sprayed the WD40 on the 3 leads and polished them with a paper towel. Put it back on the charger….red, quick flashing green….quick flashing green….still quick flashing green! The dead battery is charging after all these years lol. So glad I didn’t recycle it. Thank you!

How about rubbing alcohol, so the battery doesn't smell like wd40? Or electronics cleaner? Or... like, a wire brush... or something...

Those would work also. It's what I had handy..

WD40 is good but I prefer Deoxit, works on lots of electronics especially crunchy volume knobs, etc.

Gone are the days of the indestructible Ryobi tool. I have an impact driver from 2001 that worked thousands and thousands of srews,fell of a roof 4.5m nose first onti concrete and still shows only minor fatigue. I went through 3 much younger models in the past 8 years. They're good, but not as good as they used to be.

Dielectric grease
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY 2 года назад
Yup!
@mikeycurtis7861
@mikeycurtis7861 Год назад
Lmao no THAT IS WRONG! Dielectric grease is NOT conductive!! It's a specific grease made for protecting electrical connections from the elements. It only gets squeegeed away from the connection, when it's pressed together. If u put dielectric grease between 2 connectors, electricity WILL NOT pass through! It's meant to be added on AFTER a good connection is already made. It's main useful factor (besides weatherproofing) is that it will easily move away during a connection, after a disconnection. Learn how to use a volt meter and prove me wrong.. IN FACT, read the can of dielectric grease and prove me wrong!

Sounds like the charge controller is bad. Have you tried a different charger? Is it still under warranty?

Any suggestions for tools that take a few tries to turn on? My Ryobi rotary cutter and shop vac have both been reluctant to start up lately. The motor will spin briefly, but stop. Flicking the switch on and off a few times has worked, but I'm worried it'll get worse.
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY 3 года назад
When I usually experience this it's a battery issue, iether dirty contacts, undercharged, or an undersized batteries, the 1.5 and 2 ah batteries are not much good in tools with motors other than drills, and they struggle there. Try a different larger battery and see if that makes a difference. Worse case the switch on the tool has a loose connection or corrosion on the switch contacts.
@CantankerousDave
@CantankerousDave 3 года назад
@@DadItYourselfDIY it happens with 4ah batteries (real ones, not knockoffs).

@@DadItYourselfDIY Yep, just the rotary tool and the 6 gallon vacuum.
@DadItYourselfDIY
@DadItYourselfDIY 3 года назад
That 6 gallon vacuum I know is a power hog. You may need to try a 6ah. There is also a known switch issue. Do you have the rocker switch or the rubber switch. Not sure what the issue with the rotary tool is. I use that one with all size batteries.
