This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music, always brings tears to my eyes. We played it today because of Mr Sakamoto's passing, and because my husband had never heard it.
Mine too! My wife and I have a history with this theme, since we kept a long-distance relationship, while I studied my postgrad and worked in Asia. And we both enjoy watching this film during the season of Xmas & New Year...
RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto ........ This was one of my late husbands FAVOURITE PIECE OF CONTEMPARY MUSIC.... WE PLAYED THIS AT HIS FUNERAL 2014......My thoughts to your family you are up there with him ......make some more BEAUTIFUL MUSIC fab mcclernon x
I actually saw the film in the UK when it was released. Incredibly moving. Great acting by Bowie and Sakamoto. Sakamoto’s musical score was the icing on the cake. Sad to hear of his passing today. RIP Sakamoto.
Mr. Sakamoto may have made a song that will last as long as 1000 years. In the distant future, if it forget who the song was written, it will be playing somewhere in the world. As a folk song of the future humanity.
Very wise ... because humans are FLAWED ... and those who do not question themselves do not acknowledge their own fallibility. This is a huge problem nowadays, because people are lying and cheating "for the greater good/the cause" because they BELIEVE in "being right" / "being the good guys".
Christianity has no place here. Go elsewhere and preach to the idiots you can find there.. Sakamoto wasn't an aethiest but he was certainly not a christian...@@Muck006
Oh my goodness, I came to listen to this song, but didn't expect to cry at the news of Sakamoto's passing. I always wanted to see him in concert. May his soul rest and his music live on.
I REMEMBER WATCHING MERRY CHRISTMAS MR LAWRENCE WHEN IT WAS FIRST RELEASED AND BUYING THE LP ! I WAS IN AWE OF RYUICHI SAKAMOTO I COUDN'T STOP CRYING THEN AND I'M EVEN WORSE NOW . MUCH RESPECT RYUICHI FROM THE HEART xxx
I watched it no tv as a 12 year old and then spend months hunting down the tape of the soundtrack and when I finally got it and when I finally got it I cried my eyes out first time listening to it again.
Lynn, Not to disagree - but when David Sylvian's vocals come into play - it's on an even bigger playing field. The two of them are so - Soul/Heart/Ear moving !!!
Same here, what a fantastical master piece of a movie, such a sad but overwhelmingly beautiful piece of film,David Bowie is perfect in his position and the rest of the actors proved to the world that hope is still not lost yet, even if politics is so dark and unfair,we all turn to dust the same
Could NOT share My Hero Ryuichi Sakamoto's magnificent score for the 1983 movie "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" that was shared by his Facebook Act without sharing the heart wrenchingly beautiful song from the movie - AND one of my ALL TIME Favourite songs -- by genius Ryuichi Sakamoto which is a key part of the movie! Thanks for sharing this full version.
A truly well crafted song, musically immense, lyrically unique and vocally only possible with David Sylvian A truly emotional trip condensed in under 15 minutes!
Beautifully haunting & timeless masterpiece. David Sylvians voice is just so emotional & just enhances the music to another level. Very moving. My forever song 💗💕 always tugs at my heart & I lose myself in it. 🥰
A piece of music, which reaches inside ure body, ure mind, ure soul, that's lifts u & pulls at every emotion & feeling, that u never knew u had, a song that can make u sad, happy, emotional, never has a song reached every feeling u have all at once, thank u
I bought this aged 13 in 1983. Still as hauntingly beautiful today as it was back then. Sylvian's breathy and emotionally charged vocals and lyrics just add further depth to the piece. As a singer myself I really appreciate this song. Very sad to hear of Sakamoto's untimely death. This is a great tribute to him and his amazing talent as a pianist, and composer, of which he was a master of his art.
Yes, I never watched the movie myself, and this song is one of my favorite. We had it playing on the radio in France when I was just a child, maybe 5 or 6 years old. Some songs and melodies move a child and stick for life.
Il più bel brano di musica contemporanea, assieme a tutte le sue versioni (da film, strumentali, strumentali dal vivo con violino e anche cantate). Resta nel cuore e nel cuore, almeno, il mio, vi rimarrà!
George Redelinghuys it did from gamelan. Ryuichi said he wanted to put something that was both exotic to Japanese and Western culture . If you watch the criterion collection extra where ryuichi talks about the film's score, he goes into great depth about how he hated his work for so long until he gave in realizing people still love and praise his work as one the greatest
Two of my musical heroes working together, creating fantastic unforgrttable music. A third hero of mine acts in the movie, which is also fabulous by the way.
Lyrics: The wounds on your hands never seem to heal I thought all I needed was to believe Here am I, a lifetime away from you The blood of Christ, or the beat of my heart My love wears forbidden colours My life believes Senseless years thunder by Millions are willing to give their lives for you Does nothing live on? Learning to cope with feelings aroused in me My hands in the soil, buried inside of myself My love wears forbidden colours My life believes in you once again I`ll go walking in circles While doubting the very ground beneath me Trying to show unquestioning faith in everything Here am I, a lifetime away from you The blood of Christ, or a change of heart My love wears forbidden colours My life believes My love wears forbidden colours My life believes in you once again
