I asked Aðalbjörn in person and he told me Fjara means "to fade away" like water fades away when it goes to low tide but also the way a person can fade away.

fjara is low tide, its what the nordic countries says

After I searched through (it felt like) half of the internet I thought "Beach" or "Tides" would be the best short translations for it. To be honest I threw a coin which one of these two shall be it. I just became annoyed after a while of searching for the right translation. Sorry for that. =)
@stephencastello6553
@stephencastello6553 5 лет назад
@@asmundsand2565 it is ebb tide to be specific. The time between high tide and low tide when the waters are receding. It is commonly used for low tide, but does not actually mean low tide.
@stephencastello6553
@stephencastello6553 5 лет назад
@@Schwarzstern Fjara is an old Icelandic word. It actually means ebb tide. The time when the waters recede from high tide to low tide. It is commonly used as tide or low tide, but that is not the actual contextual meaning. It can be found in the Icelandic-English dictionary, based on the ms. collections of the late Richard Cleasby on page 156. The word can also mean foreshore or shore.

I have never thought that English and Icelandic words could be so similar. Nations are more related than it may seem...
@ginfer6666
@ginfer6666 8 лет назад
(linguist here) That's because the old Vikings travelled to Iceland and the British Isles a couple of centuries ago and left a huge footprint on language and culture. Most people don't know how much they ave actually influenced the language and that many word of the English language today are derived from Old Norse :)
@SatjaSarvate
@SatjaSarvate 8 лет назад
Woah, that's actually pretty cool stuff. :D
@TheFourthDefender
@TheFourthDefender 7 лет назад
Yeah, nothing like that, kitchen linguist. Both the english-saxons people and their language originally came from the netherlands/jutland, invading what was then a roman colony on the decline known as Albion and taking it for themselves (like the northmen tried to do a few centuries later). Over time it evolved into a separate language of its own, but the grammatical structure is basically still exactly the same as that of languages like dutch or swedish. Just different words and phonetics, and a huge latin imprint for english, more importantly so than in other germanic languages. But originally, these all come from the same ancient germanic tongue.
@TheFourthDefender
@TheFourthDefender 7 лет назад
Also, while the "wall street english" and american accents now sound nothing like norse tongue, there are hundreds of different accents in England alone, some of which are reminiscent of it. In some parts of the country a guy from London might have trouble understanding what is being said, or wonder if the people there are speaking some swede dialect because some accents sound very similar to scandinavian languages.

It’s very obvious that you actually just ripped the audio file from the music video, so I hope you also purchased the song just like you mentioned in the beginning of the video.
@Schwarzstern
@Schwarzstern 6 лет назад
I actually did. But I'm sorry to disappoint you if you expect a proving photo of me and the disc, because I'm not gonna send you one. I ripped off the music video audio because there's a special reason for it: The music video is viewed kinda often on RU-vid. Since RU-vid recommends the same/similar audio versions in the recommendations I wanted to use this one to get people to see my video. The translation from Icelandic to English wasn't thaaaaaat easy to do - just when you're looking about finding the "right" translation for the title - so I want people to see this. Above all - the actual album version is usually being blocked because of the copyrights. I'm a German guy. We have an institution called "GEMA" which rules about music copyrights. And it's a bitch in that business. So yeah. That's why I used the music video audio. Greetz
@Mephistopheles13
@Mephistopheles13 6 лет назад
Hey, I am not knocking you for using the audio file from the video... just making sure you weren't being a hypocrite. Yeah, we have copyright protection here in the US so I get it.

This is the furthest I will go Never the same again. The vile path calling me, the day I ran from life again. If I win, only this one time, it will still be the end of me. My belief that nothing ends well. This is the end for me. Day and night heart was uneased. Broken will frozen smile. Riding on, heart pumping tears. Day and night I walk alone. Bones rotting in the earth, like your secrets that you long kept from me. But blood weighs more than silence. Broken words, shards in your mouth, cut deeper than any wound. Broken vows will never be the same. Lies like the viper's bite

You're totally right. I took one of the first translations that were out there on the internet, which weren't that correct. But for a song that I've bought and for which I won't get anything I thought "Okay, you've searched for the best translations for hours now, let's just take this one". Sorry for some mistakes in this one, buddy.

Indeed it was. And there's no reason to apologize. I am myself a German and don't speak Icelandic, just Norwegian. But there's a huge difficulty range between those two languages. So yeah, I'm definetly open for some corrections! :)
