Sütterlin and Kurrentschrift Differences - Learn to Read Old German Script 

Recently, I was having a discussion with my elderly German-born neighbour about the difficulty non-Germans have reading the Gothic script and the old German handwriting. So he wrote out examples of the German cursive handwriting that he had learned as a boy in Bavaria in the late 1930s. It's exactly Suetterlin! He wrote it very well too. My interest in German scripts is from my genealogical research, as most of my ancestors were German or Swiss (German-speaking). Thank you for making this video...it was most helpful.

thank you for all that information . I have letters from my grandfather who has past. I was not able to read them because of the Kurrentschrift. now I will learn that.

How would you suggest learning to read records at Archion? I’m worried about starting my sub and not being able to read the old script. I’m not sure to what degree I’ll need to have learned. I feel like I might need to take first grade cursive lessons and write on the special paper with the big pencil! My insecurity also lies with my only intermediate German language knowledge.
